25.01.2022 Congratulations to PA Hospital’s lead amputee rehabilitation physiotherapist of 17 years, Dr Heather Batten, who has been awarded Queensland’s only health-focused Churchill Fellowship to support people with lower limb amputation to make a successful transition from hospital to home. Dr Batten, who consults around the state to support amputee patient recovery, said her Churchill Fellowship project would address the unique social and environmental barriers to community partic...ipation and health that amputees face identified in her PhD research project completed last year. "With my Churchill Fellowship I will be going overseas to look at how different hospital rehab programs manage amputee patients’ transition to living back at home, and then make recommendations about how to implement those strategies at PA Hospital and throughout Queensland. Dr Batten said she expects to travel to Norway, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Ireland, and the UK for her project in 2021, COVID-19 restrictions allowing. 24.01.2022 Princess Alexandra Hospital's Acquired Brain Injury Transitional Rehabilitation Service (ABI TRS) has reached a milestone by providing community rehabilitation for its 300th client, 35-year old Tony Randall. Tony was admitted to hospital in early May after being trapped between two trucks. He was discharged from BIRU in August to his home in Moggill with the support of ABI TRS. He said accessing therapy in his own home after discharge was essential to his recovery. I came ho...me in a wheelchair and now I’m independently walking around my house and outside with a walker. I am also showering and toileting myself which I couldn’t do when I first got home. Since discharge I’ve also been able to keep doing group therapy which has been good. It’s made me notice a few things I didn’t realise about myself. I think it has improved my home life in general and allowed me to be a dad again. 24.01.2022 PA Hospital Occupational Therapist Dominic Churchett has achieved the impressive result of 14th place in the Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast comp out of a field of 730 competitors. Even better is his ranking as the third non-professional ironman across the line! Some #healthheroes wear lycra The challenge involving a 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride, and 21.1km run was held on 13 September under COVID-19 guidelines which saw four competitors at a time off the starting line every ...30 seconds. His time of 4:10:43 effectively sets a personal best for the start of his ironman career. During the bike-leg, it was pouring rain making it hard to see with the distraction of constantly swiping at my glasses, but I held a pace of just under 40km an hour for the 90km ride which I was very happy with," said Dominic. The final run-leg was definitely a challenge following the swim and cycle but Dominic’s ironman spirit saw him powering through the final kilometre at a pace of 2:58/km for those who don’t run, this is flying after such a long and taxing physical effort. #healthheroesweek #ironman #anythingispossible IRONMAN

24.01.2022 Are you at risk? When you’re feeling unwell, food can often be the last thing on your mind. But have you ever wondered what would happen if you were too sick to eat for a long time? This week is Malnutrition Week and our Logan Hospital dietitian assistants Cassie and Liam are raising awareness about the importance of good nutrition in hospitals. But they can’t do it alone preventing malnutrition is everyone’s business. Malnutrition can affect anyone so if you or someone you are caring for has recently experienced unplanned weight loss or a poor appetite, is unable to eat or is eating less than usual, speak with your doctor or health professional.

22.01.2022 COVID IN WYNNUM WASTEWATER: Traces of COVID-19 virus have been detected in sewage at the Wynnum treatment plant. These surveillance tests are extremely sensitive and can pick up tiny pieces of the genetic material of the virus. The result does not necessarily mean there are active cases in the Wynnum area and there are no known outbreaks or cases in the area. However, we cannot rule out the possibility that infectious persons were, or are still, in the area.... People who have recovered from COVID-19 can have live or dead virus in their stool for weeks after recovery. If you or your loved one has any COVID-19 like symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, or loss of smell or taste - please get tested. People who have been tested should stay home and isolate themselves from others until they get their result. The COVID-19 Screening Clinic will be open at the Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre, Gundu Pa, this weekend. Saturday: 12 noon - 6pm. Sunday and Monday: 8am - 4pm Testing is also available at our hospitals, including Redland Hospital, and primary health centres. For all testing locations head to: www.covid19.qld.gov.au If you have any concerns phone your GP or 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84), or present to your closest emergency department.

21.01.2022 The spotlight is on novice and emerging researchers at Redland Hospital following the inaugural Bayside Research Showcase recently which attracted more than 100 participants in-person and online. UQ Academic Lead and Inaugural Chair of the Bayside Research Advisory Group Dr Salih Salih said the showcase was an important part of the Metro South Health Research Strategy (2019-2024) which recognises the far-reaching benefits of research for our consumers, our community, and for ...Metro South Health. We are all committed to providing the best care to our patients, and we should always think about ways we can evaluate and improve," Dr Salih said. 20.01.2022 Princess Alexandra Hospital’s Diabetes and Endocrine Department is now an accredited tertiary diabetes care service with the National Association of Diabetes Centres (NADC). Director of the Department Professor Anthony Russell said the NADC accreditation is a testament to PA Hospital’s commitment to delivering excellent patient outcomes and innovating in the diabetes care space. The NADC accreditation aims to lift the standard of diabetes care delivered by services across ...Australia by identifying practices and procedures that result in improved care, improved quality of life among people with diabetes, and a reduction in the prevalence of diabetes-related complications using a three-pronged approach combining governance, educational and clinical criteria. The accreditation process has confirmed we are meeting national standards for delivery of diabetes care and acknowledged the value of our investment in research to support patients to manage their health condition, he said. 19.01.2022 Our neonatal nurses in our Special Care Nursery at Logan Hospital got a bit of a surprise recently, admitting the biggest baby ever needing specialised care. Not yet named, the 5450g (12 pound) blue bundle of joy was a big surprise for mum and dad Alma and Mike. When he was in his isolet on his belly he would wiggle down so far his feet hit the sides, they said. "He is always hungry."... Congratulations!

19.01.2022 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and PA Hospital’s Operational Services team is getting behind PA Research Foundation’s Project Pink campaign to raise funds for much-needed breast cancer research. Vicki Chapman of Porterage Services (front), who survived breast cancer five years ago thanks to really good treatment at PA Hospital, says she hopes that by wearing pink this month, she will help spread the Foundation’s important fundraising message. I was diagnosed five... years ago and I have been cancer free since then. It is great to work as part of such a supportive team for an employer that was 100% behind me in my return to work. In 2020, more than 3,100 Australian women will lose their battle with breast cancer, making it the second most common cause of female cancer-related death. Funds raised through Project Pink will support revolutionary breast cancer research projects at the PA Hospital Campus which are focused on improving treatments and diagnostics for those faced with the disease. For Vicki’s colleagues, jumping on board the breast cancer awareness campaign is a no-brainer. We love Vicki and we are also standing up for women in our families who have been diagnosed as well. It’s good to be involved in showing support for women everywhere experiencing breast cancer. To learn more about Project Pink and donate to breast cancer research, visit PA Research Foundation’s campaign website: www.projectpink.org.au

18.01.2022 A new health justice partnership at Logan Hospital commenced this month to provide more support for some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged patients. The Older Persons Advocacy and Legal Service known as ‘OPALS’ is a partnership between Metro South Health and Caxton Legal Centre which brings together lawyers, social workers and health professionals to support older patients who are at risk of or experiencing elder abuse. Director of Social Work at Logan Hospital Dr ...Reeny Jurczyszyn said that sadly, physical, emotional, sexual, psychological and financial abuse is often inflicted on older Australians by members of their own family. As health professionals, we are in a unique position of trust, and this means patients are often more likely to open up about their situation at home. As part of the OPALS program, training will be rolled out across Logan Hospital to help staff identify the warning signs of elder abuse, know where to refer the patient, and how to best respond sensitively and confidentially. OPALS provides a clear pathway for Logan Hospital staff to connect the patient with specialist support through the social work team, as well as access to a lawyer who specialises in elder law. The service is an extension of the OPALS service at PA Hospital and is the second health justice partnership for Logan Hospital, with the Women’s Legal Service providing free legal advice and support to women experiencing domestic and family violence. OPALS is funded by the Commonwealth Government Attorney-General’s Department under a three-year contract for Protecting the Rights of Older Australians Elder Abuse Service Trials. 17.01.2022 It was wonderful to watch Tim McCallum, former PA Hospital Spinal Injuries Unit patient and Voice Coach of 'Singing Cords' peer-led therapeutic singing group, performing live at the AFL Grand Final at the Gabba. Tim sang the National Anthem to a 30,000 strong audience before the match on the weekend. "I don't think there's anybody else in Australia who has more passion for singing our Australian national anthem than me," the classical singer told ABC Radio Brisbane. "When yo...u get the responsibility of singing an anthem they're all very regal. [There's a responsibility to deliver] the anthem in a way that encourages others to sing it, but also uplifts people." 12.01.2022 You never quite know who your next patient might be! Today Logan Hospital Clinical Nurse Ross Greene was honoured to meet Sydney 2000 Paralympian Stephen Eaton and get an up close and personal look at his gold medal. The discus champion was happy to chat with staff about the 20th anniversary of the Games which he celebrated virtually on Sunday with fellow athletes.... "There was meant to a get together but because of COVID it had to be a bit different but we are planning a huge celebration next year to make up for it."

12.01.2022 Nurse Navigator Vince Cheah, based at QEII Hospital, works within the Metro South Health’s Movement Disorders Team which is making a tangible difference to Queenslanders living with Parkinson’s Disease and other movement disorders. Preparing patients who have Parkinson’s Disease and conditions like Motor neuron disease and Huntington’s Disease for their health journey is very rewarding and it pays off because you can see the direct impact it has on their quality of life as t...he disease progresses. Providing person-centred care for a smaller cohort, I am able to monitor the patient’s conditions and help them with advanced care planning, medication management, and assist them in accessing supports such as the NDIS and link them in with organisations like Parkinson’s Queensland. Well done to Vince and the team. For more information about accessing the Movement Disorders Nurse Navigator service visit: www.metrosouth.health.qld.gov.au//nur/nurse-navigator-faqs

11.01.2022 Senior Staff Specialist at PA Hospital, Professor Carmel Hawley says PA Hospital was one of 18 hospitals involved in the largest-scale trial of it's kind spanning 7 years with 270 patients to understand if phosphate binders help to reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in patients with kidney disease. "The findings were that lanthanum carbonate, commonly used to treat high levels of phosphate in patients with kidney disease, did not have a beneficial effect on ...cardiovascular disease indicators compared to placebo," she said. Prof Hawley said that studies to disprove something are just as important as studies that cure something because of the benefit to the patient’s quality of life and a reduction in pill burden. 08.01.2022 Princess Alexandra Hospital has unveiled Brainlab ExacTrac Dynamic, a pioneering external beam radiation therapy machine that offers significant advances in the treatment of cancers and other conditions. Radiation Oncologist Dr Mark Pinkham said the new system is the first to be rolled out in the southern hemisphere. With Brainlab radiotherapy system we can offer patients the treatment capabilities of never-before-seen, high-speed thermal surface tracking technology in combi...nation with an update of ExacTrac X-ray monitoring. Dr Pinkham said the system offers dual treatment options for patients: stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), where many precisely focused radiation beams are used to target and damage the DNA of problem cells in the brain, neck, lungs, liver, and spine; and hyper-accurate Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT). It is this Surface Guided Radiation Therapy that makes the system unique using advanced camera technology to facilitate 3D tracking of the skin’s surface during radiation set-up and treatment. This technique provides the radiation therapist with thousands of reference points on a patient’s skin and allows them to precisely track a patient’s movements in real-time during treatment, ensuring radiation is delivered safely and to sub-millimetre accuracy. Dr Pinkham said the increased precision and comfort offered by the new technology is the key innovation he and colleagues at PA Hospital are confident will improve patient outcomes. The main objective of radiation therapy is to treat the cancer accurately while avoiding collateral damage to key structures and vital organs located near the treatment area to reduce impact on quality of life, and the newest radiation treatment technology at PA Hospital is helping us do just that. Because the machine responds to movement so precisely, it also offers a more comfortable treatment experience by removing the need for the patient to be significantly immobilised during therapy. https://metrosouth.health.qld.gov.au//pa-hospital-launches https://fb.watch/1FEwN-E0OE/ #princessalexandrahospital #innovation #cancerservices #radiationtherapy #brainlab

05.01.2022 It's National Nutrition Week and Princess Alexandra Hospital's cafeteria is getting behind the research-backed Mediterranean Diet to boost the health of hospital staff, patients and visitors. Until 18 October you can enjoy Mediterranean Diet-approved Mediterranean Vegetable and Persian Fetta Salad and 600ml Nu Water for only $10, or Mediterranean Chicken with Tomato and Vegetable Sauce on Couscous and 600ml Nu Water for just $10.50. Princess Alexandra Hospital Research Diet...itian and Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) expert Dr Hannah Mayr said the Mediterranean healthy eating pattern is associated with reduced risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes and is promoted by The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and National Heart Foundation. For people who want to eat better and kickstart their health during National Nutrition Week, I recommend they skip the fad diets and focus on consuming more fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, wholegrains, extra virgin olive oil, fish and seafood, and limit their intake of red meat, processed foods, and sugary drinks, Dr Mayr said. The best research evidence available shows this approach to eating is good for our heart, mood, and overall wellbeing. 04.01.2022 This week is NAIDOC Week, a chance to recognise and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, heritage and achievements. This year’s theme is Always Was, Always Will be, and recognises and celebrates that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for more than 65,000 years. Below, we share some of the ways we celebrated NAIDOC Week at Metro South Health this year.

04.01.2022 Tai Chi is being used as a new way to combat social isolation and keep people active at Metro South Health’s Bayside Community Care Unit (CCU). Exercise like Tai Chi can: improve cognitive functioning reduce symptoms of mental illness such as depression, anxiety and psychotic symptoms... protect against the development of chronic conditions. Our residents say it has helped increase their self-esteem and prevent isolation, and reduce depression and negative mood If you feel that you need mental health support and have never accessed a mental health service before, please contact your general practitioner or phone our mental health access line 1300 MH CALL (1300 642255). 1300 MH CALL is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

03.01.2022 Research co-led by Principal Research Fellow with PA Hospital’s Nutrition and Dietetics Department, Dr Ingrid Hickman (pictured left), has shown the potential for high intensity interval training (HIIT) to be used in the treatment of fatty liver disease. Although regular aerobic exercise has been established as an effective therapy for reducing liver fat in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), Dr Hickman said she and her fellow researchers at the Universit...y of Queensland wanted to know if this type of interval training could be employed in the treatment of complex patients with fatty liver disease in the tertiary hospital system. For people with more severe disease, we hypothesised a more intense ‘dose’ of exercise may be needed, Dr Hickman said. 03.01.2022 It's World Mental Health Day and as many of us have been left feeling stressed, depressed and anxious by the coronavirus pandemic, PA Hospital is glad to have Nurse Navigator Shane Collet on staff to ensure appropriate mental health support is provided to patients presenting frequently to the Emergency Department (ED) in crisis. As a Nurse Navigator I interpret across the silos of care and challenge the current system to rethink how we can do things better so we can ensure t...he patient always receives the best possible care, he said. My background is in critical care, mental health and addiction, and when I came into the role I could see there was a real need to bridge ED and Mental Health operations, he said. By working with Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Services, I have managed to get ED patients direct access to the Metro South Health wellbeing team. Instead of patients having to wait a day or two to access support, they can now walk away from ED after a brief intervention and risk assessment to see a mental health service at Woolloongabba the same afternoon. Nice work Shane! #WorldMentalHealthDay #PAHospital #EmergencyDepartment #ED #NurseNavigator #qldhealth #healthcare #mentalhealth

02.01.2022 Mask anxiety research by Occupational Therapist Dr Jodie Nixon (pictured), is helping cancer patients at Princess Alexandra Hospital face down fears associated with thermoplastic mask use during radiation therapy treatment. According to Dr Nixon, patients with head and neck cancer wear the thermoplastic mask to immobilise them so that the high dose radiation used to kill cancer cells and shrink tumours during therapy can be directed at the problem tissue only, a requirement ...that often leads to anxiety. Early studies on mask anxiety showed between 14 and 58 percent of patients experienced distress and claustrophobia related to mask use during radiotherapy which is something we also identified anecdotally at PA Hospital, so we took the time to research the issue further, she said, explaining it had become the focus of her PhD. "We have been working closely with patients over the last four years to determine strategies to help them manage anxiety during treatment." 02.01.2022 It's Foot Health Week and Princess Alexandra Hospital's foot care clinics are working hard to keep diabetes patients on the move by combining the expertise of orthotists, prosthetists, podiatrists, and orthopaedic and vascular specialists. Director Prosthetics/Orthotics & Podiatry Services, Shaun McKay said many patients are unaware of the risk diabetes poses to their extremities. When people with diabetes don’t manage their blood glucose levels, they get numbness in thei...r feet and vascular problems that predisposes them to ulceration of the feet and infections that can lead to amputations, he said, explaining that reduced sensation in limbs means wounds can often go unnoticed. Some patients have had foreign objects embedded in their feet for days and haven’t realised until someone else has brought it to their attention, he said. Many patients spend a long time going to their GP for dressings before they are referred to our service to get the right support." Podiatrist Mohammed Kola said he and colleagues within the department are dedicated to helping patients heal their wounds so they can avoid permanent debilitation from amputation. Sally works in the Bayside Child and Youth Mental Health Service, and her peers who nominated her for the award said:... "If my own children ever require acute mental health support in an Emergency Department, I sincerely hope Sally is on duty - I can think of no one I'd rather see in that situation as a parent." Well done Sally!

01.01.2022 People living with complex chronic medical conditions will be given access to digital nutrition support as part of a new study at Princess Alexandra Hospital. Lead researcher, Dietitian Dr Ingrid Hickman, said many people who receive care from the Hospital for chronic conditions can benefit greatly by improving their nutrition. Improving diet quality is the cornerstone of treatment for many conditions we see often at the Hospital, such as kidney disease, liver disease and fo...r people who have received a kidney or liver transplant here, Dr Hickman said. More than 60 percent of patients with those conditions will also have additional metabolic complications that make their care quite complex, but the message on healthy eating remains the same. The U-Decide study will investigate the impact of integrating technology and telehealth options for accessing specialist Dietitian support and nutrition information to better care for people with complex chronic conditions. Sophus Nutrition has worked closely with dietitians at PA Hospital to develop a digital nutrition education program specifically to support this cohort of patients, Sophus CEO Tara Diversi said.
