25.01.2022 You may have heard that this week Meg Lanning is back at the top of ICC ODI batting rankings but did you know she also has a tunnel boring machine named after her? Meg sent us a video message to say hello

25.01.2022 Did you know this little building can fit about 2km worth of cabling inside? We have extended works at Caulfield station until Friday 4 June to install relocatable equipment buildings like this one. They will house the critical signalling, telecoms and power infrastructure needed to run High Capacity Signalling on the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines and through the Metro Tunnel. This new technology will enable more trains, more often on Melbourne's rail network. Find out more: https://go.vic.gov.au/qS1BYl

23.01.2022 Big project = Big new words! Find some of our favourite construction terms (and what they mean) in the new Metro Tunnel word search. Perfect for youngsters (and the young at heart). Start searching here: https://metrotunnel.vic.gov.au//construction-m/word-search

23.01.2022 On 7 November, our Sessional Teacher Sian Fitzpatrick and Online Communications Officer Murphy Whitmore hosted our first Metro Tunnel for kids live on Facebook. This stream covered quizzes, fun facts, and a new augmented colouring-in activity for parents and children to take part in together. More than 10,000 people tuned into the event. The audience displayed high levels of engagement as over 20 questions were asked ranging from how big is a TBM to how many are working on o...ur tunnel. This successful session also grew an important demographic on the Metro Tunnel Facebook as almost 50% of the viewership were women aged 35-44 years. We also integrated Facebook's interactive poll function which garnered an average 100 responses per question. A big shout out to our Education, Graphic and Digital teams, who worked closely together to make this event a success. In case you missed it, you can watch our Metro Tunnel for kids video here: https://bit.ly/3kbV73V

21.01.2022 Tunnel boring machine (TBM) Alice recently completed the 1.7km journey tunnelling from the Domain precinct at St Kilda Road to South Yarra. The TBM is named after medical war hero Alice Appleford, who served as a military nurse in both World Wars. She was highly decorated for her efforts including with a Florence Nightingale medal, the Red Cross’ highest honour. A few generations on, Alice’s grandson Peter Appleford named one of his daughters Alys taking the original Wels...h spelling of his grandmother’s name. Alice’s great-granddaughters (Alys, Grace and Tahlia) are regularly doing school assignments or presentations on Alice, says Peter. The naming of the tunnelling machines after Alice and the other great Victorian women helps us all to recognise their outstanding achievements. 20.01.2022 A few months ago, we invited up-and-coming journalist Leo Puglisi of 6 News to join us on site at Town Hall Station and take part in his first-ever media event. He was right at home among the press pack, asking the hard-hitting questions and giving his rival networks a run for their money. We're sure we'll see you again in a few years, Leo!

19.01.2022 Did you knowthe Metro Tunnel will have 26 cross passages along the 9km tunnel alignment. These are an important safety feature that allow people to move from one tunnel to the other in the event of an emergency. With the main tunnels between Kensington and Parkville now complete, cross passage construction in this area is now underway.

19.01.2022 Metropolitan Melbourne, there are only five reasons to leave home. Shopping for food and supplies that you need, and exercise, both within 10 kilometres of your home. Care and caregiving. Authorised work or education, if you can't do it from home. And getting vaccinated as soon as you're eligible.... Remember, always check-in when you're out. Fitted face masks are mandatory indoors and outdoors. And if you have any symptoms, get tested. For the latest updates go to CORONAVIRUS.vic.gov.au

19.01.2022 In light of the current circuit breaker restrictions, Metro Tunnel HQ will be temporarily closed until further notice. All Education Program bookings during the lockdown will be postponed and rescheduled. The safety of our visitors, staff and members of the public is our top priority. We apologise for any inconvenience. Visit www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au for more information regarding Victoria's new restrictions.

19.01.2022 In our live Q&A session, tunnelling expert Paul Thomas discussed the cross passages that are currently being constructed on the Metro Tunnel. Watch and learn about the 26 cross passages that serve as an important safety feature by allowing people (including emergency services) to move from one tunnel to the other in the event of an emergency. The cross passages are constructed using traditional mining techniques to connect the two tunnels. This involves saw cutting through the tunnel lining segments, using an excavator to mine the cross passage, spraying concrete (shotcrete) to support the ground during excavation, and then lining the cross passages with steel reinforcement and concrete.

10.01.2022 The Metro Tunnel Creative Program pop-up park on Domain Road has grown! Last year, we worked with local businesses and City of Melbourne to install seating and planter boxes in five carparks, allowing local restaurants to increase their outdoor dining space. We’ve now extended this space over more carparks to allow for more outdoor dining in a COVIDsafe way. All planting was done in consultation with Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria to ensure it complements the local parklands. Find out more at the Metro Tunnel website https://bit.ly/3evOMPx

This is an incredibly huge achievement for our whole team, congratulations everyone!

02.01.2022 Did you know all four Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) working on Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel are named after great Victorian women? Meet Alice Appleford. She served as a military nurse in both World Wars and was one of only seven Australian nurses awarded a medal for bravery during WWI. Today, Alice’s family remembers her tireless work ethic and generous spirit. I reflect on Alice’s resilience, to carry on doing her absolute best each day to help people, in some extraordinarily ...challenging circumstances, says great-granddaughter Jacqui Schranz. Jacqui’s children Lucy, 9, and Emily, 6, have been following the progress of their great-great-grandmother’s namesake, TBM Alice. This week, TBM Alice finished the 1.7km journey from Domain precinct at St Kilda Road to South Yarra completing an integral part of the Metro Tunnel Project that will help Victorians for many decades to come.
