25.01.2022 Ive often wondered why sometimes we dont do what is good for us. I wonder if it is a reflection of our level of self love and knowing we are enough? Once we are at the top of our priority list, do those things we need to do for our selves become easier to get done? I think so .... read more in my recent blog or tell me your thoughts #loveyourself #selflove #iamenough #selfcare #holisticphysio #fortitudevalley #fortitudevalleybrisbane
24.01.2022 When pain causes my healing, my lows transform to highs, and heresy became faith, my soul and heart and body were blocking my journey before, now my body became heart, heart became soul, and the soul turned to be the creator poem by Rumi translated by Nader Khalili #zenthaishiatsu #healing #mindbodyspirit #mindbodysoul #shiatsu #shiatsumassage #traditionalchinesemedicine #tcm #rumi #rumiquotes #fortitudevalleybrisbane
24.01.2022 What can you expect from a Zen Thai Shiatsu session from a registered Physio? .... As you can imagine I can not turn off the physio switch within me so at the beginning of the session I will ask you a few questions, perhaps check your range of movement and get an understanding of your background. As well as this I will check your pulse, check your tongue in order to get an understanding from a Chinese medicine point of view where your body is at at that point in time. Ex...pect the session to be a combination of Thai massage techniques, shiatsu and osteopathic/physiotherapy techniques. If it is appropriate (which it almost always is) You might be guided to do some specific regular exercises to Maintain and enhance the gains from the session. 23.01.2022 Visiting Ancient Greece reminded me of Hippocrates. He was the first person to Separate the discipline of medicine from religion. He believed that disease was not a punishment from God but the product of our environment, diet and lifestyle #innerhealer #holistichealing #innerwisdom #classicalgreekera photo of Acropolis in Athens
23.01.2022 After a long hiatus Im finally back offering Zen Thai Shiatsu sessions. The setting may be different but the heart felt and sincere connection is always the same. Some of you may be aware that I work at a speaclist head, neck and jaw physiotherapy clinic in Taringa and I will now be offering sessions from this clinic on Fridays. For enquirers please email me on [email protected] Its good to be back! Image: artist unknown (tag of you know!)
22.01.2022 I recently got re-acquainted with the teachings of #pemachodron specifically on how to develop trust. She talks about that having trust isnt about trusting in a particular outcome but rather trusting in the present moment, whatever that may look like. Its about growing your confidence that the nature of things is to change and fall apart and become something else and being able to resist a freak out about that fact is trust. Ah so difficult at times or maybe all the time can you relate? #trust #waterelement #fear #fearintofearlessness #presentmoment #mindfulness #buddhistteachings
21.01.2022 Was very excited to stumble upon Gunther Von Hagers Body Worlds exhibition in #Amsterdam. It has 200 anatomical specimens from real human bodies. I got very excited to see this specimen showing the dura mater, flax cerebri and tentorium cerebelli (this is upside down, it would be like this head is doing a head stand). These are membranes of the skull that can be vulnerable to abnormal tensions and is what we try to address in CranioSacral Therapy. Great to see in real life and get this perspective. Any other anatomy nerds out there like me? #iloveanatomy #happyplace #craniosacraltherapy #falxcerebri #tentoriumcerebelli #duramater #holisticphysio
21.01.2022 Some anatomy for your Friday.... I love this video its a great representation of how you may want to look at fascia ... so what is fascia? Its gained some interest and you could even say its in fashion in the therapy community, I guess because there is growing research and we know more about it than we use to. Fascia connects everything to everything. Its connective tissue that binds and connects tendons, bones, organs, nerves, blood vessels I.e everything! It is what all...ows for smooth movement, absorbs shock, provides framework and helps the body retain its structure (for example around the heart and lungs) and relays information to the brain faster than nerve impulses. However if there isnt good integrity in the fascial system or there are restrictions than the opposite is true of its characteristics. Have you seen the fascia when preparing meat (meat eaters)? #fascia #fascialtherapy #fortitudevalleybrisbane See more

20.01.2022 CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle form of therapy with a non invasive approach. It takes time, practice and commitment to understand and be skilled in CST and Im happy to be on this ongoing journey. The underlying philosophy is to empower the person by respecting the self healing capacity of our body. CST is there to facilitate an environment conducive to this self healing/self correcting ability. Want to know more? 19.01.2022 This is my dog Luna and I love this shot... not just because its my dog but because it beautifully captures fascial tissue in motion. Obviously there are a few things that are allowing her to shake... eg muscles - but if she used just muscles alone to do this movement she would be using an excessive amount of energy. So what is helping to conserve energy? ............Her fascial tissue. Fascia has an ability to store energy and build up to have an elastic recoil affect. Wh...en she rotates to one direction she is capturing kinetic energy, which then gets used to help rotate the body in the opposite direction. This effect has been termed the catapult mechanism. In fact scientists have found that many animals use this (including humans) to make movement more efficient! Interesting hey?? 19.01.2022 Giving the thoracic spine some love and attention is so important and well received from our cervical spine (neck), lumbar spine (lower back), pecs and even structures lower down the chain like the knees. Having a healthy and mobile thoracic is also important in maintaining healthy shoulders, because you need approximately 10 degrees of thoracic extension for normal shoulder movement above shoulder height. When you think about it shoulder movements above shoulder height happe...ns all the time like; hanging clothes on the line, cleaning windows/bathrooms, painting, swimming, gym and weight training, collecting fruit ect. Also normal thoracic mobility is important with breathing. Normal breathing requires the ribs to move like a bucket handle (lifting out to the sides), the less mobile the thoracic, then the less mobile the joints are where the ribs meet the thoracic meaning less movement with the breath. I love this Zen Thai Shiatsu gesture that opens the chest, extends the thoracic and stretches the pecs. #heartopening #thoracicmobility #thoracicextension #diaphragmaticbreathing #fortitudevalleybrisbane #fortitudevalley #holisticphysio See more

16.01.2022 Over the years working as a physiotherapist I have given countless exercise programs, advice for injury prevention and have provided things for people to do to promote an environment conducive to healing. During my initial years of practising as a physio I became confused and frustrated with the amount of times that people didnt follow through with what I had asked of them. 15.01.2022 Our old friend fear ... I feel this quote resonates even with physical pain as well as other aspects of our lives. Fear of movement can really stagnate our bodies ability to be at its potential. In fact people with lower back pain who have an increased fear mentality have been shown to experience an increase in severe, persistent and disabling pain then those with low fear. ...... a little thought for your Thursday ..... 15.01.2022 How massage can help with depression in my opinion ....... In recent years there has been a movement where Physiotherapy treatment has had a more "hands off" approach, where physical activity and exercise has been the main choice of therapy for rehabilitation instead of the traditional manual therapy. I have found this very difficult to swallow, now dont get me wrong, exercise as therapy is powerful! In almost every instance a regular exercise and movement practice is a must in order to assist the body to heal. [ 630 more words ] https://mettaphysiotherapy.com/2019/09/04/1011/
15.01.2022 When you think of physiotherapy, your first reaction may not necessarily be to think of the voice, rather you might think about shoulder or back pain... and to be honest voice physiotherapy is a relatively new concept in the physio arena. However over the past decade there has been an increase in evidence to show that there is efficacy for the use of manual therapy of the laryngeal and perilaryngeal (around the larynx) area for Muscle Tension Dysphonia (MTD). 13.01.2022 Recently in my studies of CraniosSacral Therapy (CST)and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Ive started to see some similarities. TCM encompasses the five element theory, one of which is the water element. When we think about water, we see its ability to be fluid in nature, when it meets an obstacle it adjusts by going around, moving through, sinking below or eventually eroding the obstacle. It moves fluidly, in fact the only time it loses its ability to move is when ther...e is no flow. When we treat the water element we are inviting the body to find its flow again. I feel that we have a similar intention with CST. Learning the art of CST involves developing finely tuned abilities to sense where there is movement of cerebral spinal fluid and when there is not. There is an invitation to return flow into areas that are restricted. As in nature when there is flow of water there is life and similar thing happens in our bodies .... when there is flow we feel vibrant and vital. #craniosacraltherapy #cst #traditionalchinesemedicine #tcm #waterelement #fortitudevalleybrisbane See more
12.01.2022 Cranial bone sutures wow!!! I could stare at this for a long time!!! They remind me of dove tail joins in carpentry. Its designed for stability strength yet it allows for minute movement coming from the cranial membranes and is something we capitalise on in CranioSacral Therapy. Loved Body World exhibition here in Amsterdam. PS just in case you are wondering amateur photographs on small devices were allowed! #craniosacraltherapy #holisticphysiotherapy #sutures #parietalbone #occipitalbone
11.01.2022 As physiotherapist I am very interested in helping individuals create an environment conducive to healing and I personally do this in many ways including things that are outside the traditional physiotherapy parameters. However traditional physiotherapy helps individuals do this by assisting mainly the physical body, by ensuring muscle length tension around joints is balanced, strength of muscles is appropriate and that joints have the optimum range of motion. 09.01.2022 Giving the lumbar spine some TLC today. There can be many underlying physical reasons for lumbar back pain; disc injuries, facet joint dysfunction, radiculopathy, hypomobility ect However in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) back issues have a link with the water element and its 2 corresponding channelss; urinary bladder and kidneys. In Western physiology the kidneys are responsible for the filtration and purification within the body. In TCM however, they are our reservoi...r of our vital source in other words they are our reserve of Ki. With the consistent demands of family life and work life there is often no time for the kidneys to restore and there is a continual depletion of kidney reserves. This the prime cause of lumbar back pain according to TCM philosophy. There are also psychosocial issues related to imbalances in the water element. One example is fear. Fear is part of the survival instinct, in TCM fear causes a release of our source ki from the kidneys. You can think of this in western physiology as the adrenal rush you get when youre in that fight or flight (sympathetic nervous system) response. Sometimes our response to stress is to drive ourselves even harder, which draws further from our energy reserves. Have you ever had back pain and could relate to these TCM connections? #lumbarbackpain #waterelement #kidneymeridian #kidneychannel #traditionalchinesemedicine #tcm #trust See more
09.01.2022 As a physio working in the head, neck and jaw area I am always looking for exercises to improve the function of the muscles of the face and mouth, when I saw there was some literature around how playing the didgeridoo can help with snoring by improving the strength of these muscles I was intrigued .... 07.01.2022 Some sound advice
07.01.2022 CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a subtle yet effective form of therapy that involves light touch to listen and effect the craniosacral system. It takes practice as a therapist to understand and comprehend this modality. The sessions can be made up of CST alone or can be integrated with other therapies to provide a multidisciplinary approach to your treatment. The Craniosacral system is made up of the soft tissues and fluid that protect your brain and spinal cord. It is with listening hands that CST can locate areas of weak flow or poor tissue motion. CST techniques are then used to improve these areas which inevitably has a flow on effect to your central nervous system. 05.01.2022 Finishing a Zen Thai Shiatsu session with a little moxibustion Moxa otherwise known as #mugwort is a plant from the Artemisia family. Its Latin name is Artemisia Argyi and it has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for more than 2000 years. Historically it has had many applications including edible breads, mixed with beverages such as tea and used as a mosquito repellent. In TCM it is used to treat conditions of the liver, spleen and kidney meridians. There is some research to show that mugwort has anti inflammatory properties by suppressing the inflammatory response by down regulating pro-inflammatory mediators (see doi.org/10.1016/j.jep.2017.04.017). Here we are using a moxa box on kidney shu points . Have you tried a moxa box?#traditionalchinesemedicine #fortitudevalleybrisbane #kidneymeridian #newfarm #springhill
05.01.2022 Yes, I was reminded of this earlier this week treating patients. So often when on the healing journey we can forget the progress we made over time, especially if we are still living with pain and symptoms but I think its like looking at yourself in the mirror everyday ... day to day you dont notice the signs of aging until you look back at an old photo right?! The healing journey is the same when you look back you will see the triumphs, achievements and victories (even if t...hey are small). So take a moment and remember that you once dreamed of being where you are now!!! Just a thought for your Thursday..... What are some of your achievements???
