23.01.2022 A throwback to our 2019 event - what does Breaking Barriers mean to you?

23.01.2022 We are officially two-thirds of the way through hrxhr, and this week we are looking at Article 20: "Everyone has the right to peaceful assembly and association." This week we invited Marziya Mohammedali, a talented photographer, poet, educator, designer and artist, based in Boorloo (Perth) to share a selection of their favourite images of protests they have captured and documented. Marziya’s work focuses on narratives of dissent, identity, migration and transition. They have ...documented several protest movements across a wide range of issues, exploring the spaces that are not always covered in protest art, and sharing the stories found there. You can find the full text of Marziya's commentary on this week's blog. And, be sure to share your own thoughts and experiences of Article 20 in the comments. https://www.hrxhr.org/blog/article20

23.01.2022 We are so excited to announce that we are launching a new campaign called "Human Rights x Human Responsibilities". Over the next 30 weeks we will be starting conversations based around all 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as we imagine our human rights and responsibilities anew. We hope you will join us in this creative, multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary and multi-media examination of our rights and responsibilities, and we hope to reflect your views... and ideas as our journey evolves. This week, we will be looking at Article 1: All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. Click the link below to check out the resources on the hrxhr website and be sure to join our new Facebook group to join the conversation and access pre-released materials every week. https://linktr.ee/mftwa #hrxhr #toolsforchange #mftwa #humanrights #humanrightsmuseum #socialchange Curtin Centre for Human Rights Education United Nations Association of Australia WA Inc Edmund Rice Centre WA DrawHistory Community Arts Network Mettamorphosis Courage to Care WA

There are two parts to the project, a theatre performance at the lake and a virtual reality (VR) work. Both will be launched in 2021. The project includes reference to a massacr...e at the lake. At this presentation, the team would like to share information about the project with anyone that wants to know about it.

20.01.2022 This week is the very topical Article 21: The right to democracy. "Everyone has the right to take part in the government of their country, to access public services and to vote in fair elections." We invited Rights x Tech to collaborate, framing this important right in the question of "How do we heal a democracy?". In addition to the written introduction, Rights x Tech conducted interviews with Melanne Verveer, author, former ambassador and Executive Director of the Georgeto...wn Institute for Women, Peace and Security and Elmira Bayrasli, author and Chief Executive Officer of Foreign Policy Interrupted. https://www.hrxhr.org/blog/article21

20.01.2022 On International Museums Day we celebrate the hidden, little known and untold stories of communities marginalised by their race and religion. Check out our new podcasts containing the incredible voices and stories from In Visible Ink 2021 at WA Museum Boola Bardip this year.

18.01.2022 A film about the power of photography to shape how we view and remember the persecution of European Jews by the Nazi regime. It explores the role of 'perpetrato...r photography', official and private, in creating and perpetuating Anti-Semitic and other racist biases, and introduces the counter-cultural photography of Jewish people, who used the camera to defend deeply entangled German and Jewish identities. 15.01.2022 Welcome to week 25. Can you believe we only have 5 weeks to go? This week we are looking at Article 25: "Everyone has the right to food, clothing, housing, and medical care. Mothers and children are entitled to special care and all children should enjoy the same protection." Earlier in 2020, MFT worked with the Youth Homelessness Advisory Council to capture youth voices. The young people featured in this video are experiencing homelessness, and they want to change the stereo...type and way people think about this issue. Check out the video on this week's blog, and let us know in the comments: What does the right to food and shelter mean to you? https://www.hrxhr.org/blog/article25

14.01.2022 Check out the video from our recent In Visible Ink Symposium at the WA Museum Boola Bardip! Amazing event!

14.01.2022 Welcome to week 17, where we're looking at Article 17: "(1) Everyone has the right to own property alone as well as in association with others. (2) No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his property." This week we invited Aboriginal Educator Rhys Paddick to explore this right from a first nations perspective. Rhys says: This is an interesting concept because ownership, from a traditional Aboriginal point of view, did not exist. It was Western culture or people with a diff...erent concept of what ownership is that introduced the idea of ownership to people that traditionally had no concept of ownership. So, for example, in a traditional Aboriginal context, it was not the people that owned the land, it was the land that owned them. You see, Aboriginal people never had items or things of material value which they considered theirs. It was the items and material objects which were that of the community, and this was the same with land. So really, in reality, a better word to use in this context is custodians or custodianship, understanding that the people that were living in a specific geographical region, they had a sense of responsibility to their place, but the concept of owning it and it being theirs was, as I mentioned, it was the other way around. It was the thing, or the object, or the place which owned them. I find this Article interesting because it caters to a Western mind-frame. It doesn't necessarily cater to the mind-frame of a traditional Aboriginal context. And this was not just Aboriginal Australians. This was your great, great ancestors as well." 08.01.2022 Many Australians continued to have little to no contact with certain minority groups, and lack of contact was associated with higher prejudice.

05.01.2022 The special courage it takes to experience true belonging is not just about braving the wilderness, it’s about becoming the wilderness. It’s about breaking down the walls, abandoning our ideological bunkers and living from our wild heart rather than our weary hurt. We’re going to need to intentionally be with people who are different from us. We’re going to have to sign up, join and take a seat at the table. We’re going to have to learn how to listen, have hard conversations, look for joy, share pain and be more curious than defensive, all while seeking moments of togetherness.

05.01.2022 Welcome to week 19, where we'll be looking at Article 19: "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers." This week we worked with the Edmund Rice Centre to shine a light on Article 19. With the expertise of Channel 10’s Marc Cavallaro and a number of our wonderful volunteers and interns, we invit...ed children to produce their own advertisements expressing what Freedom of Expression means to them. You can check out the ads on this week's blog. Have a go at making your own 30 second ad about what Freedom of Expression means to you, and be sure to tag us in your creations. https://www.hrxhr.org/blog/article19

04.01.2022 We build bridges, not walls #thearchitectureofinclusion

04.01.2022 Humanity is facing many potentially deadly challenges; be it social polarization, climate change, or economic issues. It’s not a lack of brilliant scientists, activists, leaders, knowledge, or technology causing these challenges. It’s tribalism, a lack of empathy and a narrow perception of the world, which is often limited to our national borders. ... That’s why we’ve decided to bring the Portal idea to lifeit’s a bridge that unifies and an invitation to rise above prejudices and disagreements that belong to the past. It’s an invitation to rise above the us and them illusion.

03.01.2022 This week we'll be looking at Article 18: "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance." We asked Kosta Lucas, Community Resilience specialist and Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) practitioner, to share his thoughts about Articl...e 18. "Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything. (Colin Kaepernick for NIKE) As far as the UNDHR goes is there any other fundamental human right that is as hard to draw boundaries around as Article 18? Informally known as Freedom of Religion, Article 18 obliges signatory governments to guarantee the freedoms of thought, conscience and religion of its citizens. While religion tends to be the most magnetic word on this list, Article 18 actually extends so much further than that. Whether these are theistic, non-theistic, organised, anarchic, orthodox or syncretic, everything Article 18 refers to, are essentially just facets of belief. The domain of our inner worlds: private, intangible and unquantifiable. However, when these beliefs cross over into the physical domains of our lives, we invoke the protection of other UNDHR Articles. So, what exactly are our beliefs without actions to give them life?" Click the link below to read the full commentary, and leave a comment about what you think of Article 18. https://www.hrxhr.org/blog/article18

03.01.2022 We’ve had a big week at MFT welcoming some new members to the team! This fantastic group of vibrant women will be helping us grow our impact in Perth and across the world. Thank you all for volunteering your time and expertise so generously.

03.01.2022 History has shown that it doesn’t start with concentration camps or mass murder, or civil war or genocide. It always starts with words: stereotypes, cliches, tropes. The fight against dehumanisation, therefore, also needs to start with words. Stories. It is easier to make sweeping generalisations about others if we know close to nothing about them; if they remain an abstraction. To move forward, we need to reverse the process: start by rehumanising those who have been dehumanised. And for that we need the art of storytelling.

02.01.2022 Welcome to Week 23 of HRxHR. We'll be looking at Article 23: "Everyone has the right to work, to equal pay, and to form and join a trade union." . This week we collaborated with a collection of union leaders who are working to ensure the safety and upholding the rights of working people through the COVID pandemic. . The commentary highlights the ongoing work and campaigns being run by the Australian Council of Trade Unions and Unions WA.... .
