13.11.2021 An excellent example of where inhouse healthcare for dance companies or institutions serves to reduce the risk of injury via good injury surveillance, ongoing evaluation of implemented interventions, and applying the scientific evidence that strength training reduces injury, not stretching. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to work with and learn from Dr Sue Mayes of The Australian Ballet over many years. This is an area I am passionate about, and investigated across... my PhD. Dancers need to ensure to train their cardiovascular fitness and strength to prepare themselves for the demands of what they do on stage. Dance class and rehearsal works on developing dance skills, but is insufficient to develop other areas of fitness. Supplementary training is needed, but needs to complement the physical demands of dance class and rehearsal. When not appropriately guided, extra conditioning that dancers engage in can lead to fatigue, and not the fitness gains they are trying to achieve. This is when fitness testing, and ongoing monitoring is useful to ensure that dance training and supplemental conditioning is achieving fitness gains, which not only sets dancers up to reduce the risk of injury but helps them dance better too! #danceperformance #danceinjuryprevention #fitnessfordancers #dancersarestrong #dancehealth
