24.11.2021 I wanted this page to be a divulgative platform about the incredible medium that is Photography, so I thought it could be a good idea to share my considerations about some great books that I own. I decided to start with a book written by a guy that is not a photographer, nor he owns a camera, although this book changed very profoundly the way I used to see and consider Photography, it is "The ongoing moment" by Geoff Dyer (my copy is in Italian). Being not a photographer Dyer... could approach the medium with great purity and honesty, putting who and what is being represented in the photographs over any technical aspect as the true protagonists of his analysis. What we get is an extraordinary journey through America's 20th century history, seen through the lens of some of the most seminal photographers of all times. Dyer finds a stunning catalogue of themes and objects -hats, stairs, roads, benches, barber shops, street signals, blind people, hands, women nudes, etc- and how they dialogue and evolve inside the frames of Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Dorothea Lange, André Kertész, Garry Winogrand, Walker Evans, Stephen Shore, Robert Frank, Edward Weston and many others. We see then how History and Photography evolve toghether and we can perceive the great importance of the medium in recording all this little details that may appear banal but contrarily work toghether to create the big picture, and that give us a honest, crude, beautiful, moving representation of a conplex and contradictory society's vices and virtues. This is to me the great lesson that this amazing book gives to us, the fact that photographers must be aware and resposible of everyday life's little things, that indeed tell a lot about who we were, are and will be. Dorothea Lange once said "A camera is a tool for learning how to see without a camera".
