21.01.2022 "When a journalist emphasises a diagnosis of schizophrenia in their story about a violent crime, they help make the word unspeakable and punish the overwhelming majority of those suffering from it for whom the worst symptom of the condition is social rejection." Australian writer Gabrielle Carey reflects on news media and cinema's persistent linking of schizophrenia and violent crimes and the burden it places on people living with #schizophrenia. 17.01.2022 HUGE ARTIST OPPORTUNITY Carers SA seeks to commission a public artwork. The objective of the artwork is to: Educate and raise awareness regarding the number of carers in the community Recognise and celebrate carers... Raise awareness about the diversity of carers in our community and the role of carers Reflect the diversity and significant role of a carer. Cares SA recognises the important role public arts plays in enhancing a message and as a means of engaging with the community. Carers SA is seeking to commission a South Australian artist/artist team to create an emotive public artwork that reflects the cultural and social significance of carers, and the importance of carers. Artists with lived experience as a carer are strongly encouraged to submit an expression of interest. It is intended that this artwork be unveiled during National Carers Week in October and be utilised for the foreseeable future to raise awareness and pay tribute to the role of a carer in the community. National Carers Week is a time for all Australians to recognise and celebrate the important contributions the 2.65 million carers make to their families, friend and our community, whilst raising awareness among Australians about the diversity of carers and their caring role. It is anticipated that the artwork is engaging, emotive and ideally interactive. More info here: https://www.carerssa.com.au/expression-of-interest-art-pie/

06.01.2022 I am a product of resilience. I am also a product of inherited trauma and have had to look deep inside myself as a man, said Joe Williams (pictured). Joe was ...one of three guest panellists on our annual National Reconciliation Week staff webinar, to build staff capacity in supporting our First Nations clients and strengthen our understanding of the transgenerational impacts of dispossession. Joe is a Wiradjuri/Wolgalu man who played in the National Rugby League before switching to professional boxing and winning several world titles. Joe has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and struggled with suicidal ideation throughout his professional sporting career. Joe now travels around the country speaking in schools, workplaces, communities and sporting groups to share his story and build understanding of what wellness means for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Our thanks to Joe, fellow panellists Belinda Duarte and AJ Williams-Tchen for a powerful and enriching conversation. #NRW2021
