10.01.2022 The event industry is unlike any other industry. COVID-19 has impacted the event industry in Western Australia unlike any other. Whilst most business will be re...opening again this week if they didn’t already reopen as soon as the lockdown started, most, if not all, event businesses in Western Australia will be working with contractors and ticket holders to cancel events which had been scheduled for the transition period. A 150 cap is just simply not feasible for events to be able to go ahead. To make matters worse, events for the remainder of February and March are also on the brink with event organisers unable to sustain many more cancellations. This lockdown has certainly been worse then the past few months, but in reality this period is just an extension of life for the events industry since the pandemic started. Event businesses, who in the past have always been ready to lend a hand when it has been needed, have been struggling to make ends meet during this pandemic with the industry virtually at a standstill. Despite this dire situation, the focus has been on other industries with many other industries (rightfully) being afforded stimulus and government assistance. We hear the stories of business that have had to close their doors this week but are now slowing reopening. We are sympathetic to their plight. But it at least these businesses are reopening. For many event businesses, they remain closed, unable to put on events and go back to work despite the lockdown ending. Yet the Government is choosing not to help or they simply don’t understand the need for assistance, despite our persistent advocacy. In these troubled times, we would like to believe that the Government is still trying to understand our industry and understand where they can help. That said, the time for help is now, more then ever. The event industry has always understood that public health has to take priority and we continue to support this. But the time has come for the Government to step up and assist the event industry. Too many good event businesses, Western Australian event businesses, are on the brink due to the extent of restrictions. These are peoples lives, their jobs, their careers, all hanging by a thread. Mark McGowan Zak Kirkup MP the event industry needs the Western Australian State Government to step up and help the event industry survive. The industry wants to get back to work but for the greater good, simply can’t. The time has come to help or you risk losing the event industry.
