23.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon, we signed the contract to launch our innovative partnership between the Brisbane Domestic Violence Service and Brisbane Youth Service to address the increasingly high rates of domestic and family violence impacting young people in Brisbane. According to the latest Annual Report from Brisbane Youth Service, young people who seek support from BYS report very high levels of violence in their lives... almost half experienced intimate partner violence, with 1...4 per cent identifying that they are currently in a violent relationship. The latest NCAS also found that, responses among young people to some questions indicate some areas of poor knowledge, relatively high endorsement of violence-supportive views and a low level of support for gender equality. This innovative partnership will see our two organisations come together in increasing access for young people under the age of 26, into specialist domestic and family violence supports. We are very excited for our Youth Domestic and Family Violence Specialist to make change in the lives of young people experiencing violence in their intimate partner and family relationships. If you need support for domestic or family violence, call BDVS anytime on 3217 2544. 22.01.2022 We welcome Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk MPs statement this morning that the Queensland Government will establish a new Treaty Advancement Committee to progress the Path to Treaty process with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. "Minister Enoch said this was a significant and historic step for Queensland that recognised the hard work of generations of people who were committed to better outcomes for First Nations peoples in this state. Member for Cook and Iamalaig woman ...Cynthia Lui said that treaty would empower First Nations Queenslanders to be more involved in driving better outcomes for their communities. Treaty will give First Nations people a platform to negotiate improved policies, programs and services for communities, Ms Lui said. Queenslands newest Member of Parliament, Member for Bundamba and proud member of the Gubbi Gubbi nation Lance McCallum said he was immensely proud to be walking the first steps on a Path to Treaty and truth telling for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Queensland. As the third Indigenous MP to simultaneously hold a seat in Queensland Parliament, my hope is that Queenslands Path to Treaty will be an historic milestone in our states reconciliation journey, and remembered for generations to come, Mr McCallum said. #alwayswasalwayswillbe #aboriginalland #firstnationspeoples #treaty Photo: Gubbi Gubbi Man Lance McCallum MP - Labor for Bundamba, Quandamooka Woman Minister Leeanne Enoch MP and Iamalaig Woman Cynthia Lui MP - Member for Cook

20.01.2022 Micah Projects teams have supported 1,263 households, including 126 families + 23 families seeking DV refuge into emergency housing in Brisbane since the end of March. At the end of March, the Queensland Governments Department of Housing and Public Works implemented an immediate housing response fund to support Queenslands most vulnerable people. This additional funding allowed Micah Projects to quickly adapt to the demand and provide uninterrupted support into emergency housing to individuals, households and families in Brisbane, so they can be safe with shelter, protecting themselves and others. 19.01.2022 Sorry Day is a time to acknowledge the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were forcibly removed from their families and communities as part of the Stolen Generations. Furthermore it is a day that provides an opportunity for all of us to pay homage to the strength of Stolen Generations survivors and to commit to playing a part in healing processes. The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission president Sir Ronald Wilson and Aboriginal and T...orres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Mick Dodson wrote in the Bringing Them Home Report: "An apology begins the healing process. It means an understanding, a willingness to enter into the suffering. It implies a commitment to do more. Twenty years on from this report at the 2017 First Nations National Constitutional Convention at Uluru the Uluru Statement from the Heart was developed by a group of Indigenous and non-indigenous community leaders which urges for the constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. There is much work to be done and Sorry Day reminds us of this. Image Credit: Tony Robertson, 2014 National Sorry Day Breakfast Image features Emily Wurramara @emilywurramara_

It is based on safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration and empowerment. -----... Are you a person with a disability or a parent, carer, teacher, staff member, friend, brother, sister? 17.01.2022 What happens next? A return to things as usual would mean sending people back onto the streets to fend for themselves. "Providing permanent housing, and ending their homelessness for good, would clearly be a better response... The federal government has a unique opportunity to begin reshaping Australias housing landscape in the October budget, by committing to a large-scale investment in #SocialHousing as part of a Covid-19 stimulus package." #EndHomelessness #HousingFirst

17.01.2022 In Australia, (and pre-COVID-19), the average wealth of the top 20% was 90 times that of the bottom 20%. Just one of the sobering facts in new research by the Australian Council of Social Service, which details the growing inequality in Australia over the last 15 years. There is a real danger in now expecting people to spend down on their already meagre savings, in order to survive. We need to support peoples incomes to prevent against dramatically widening both income and... wealth inequality and the serious health, economic and social disadvantage that occurs. - CEO Dr Cassandra Goldie #EndHomelessness #RaiseTheRateForGood #HealthEquality

08.01.2022 Before Covid-19 came along we were looking at ways we could be more involved in the Brisbane community and how we could volunteer our time and energy. I thought it might do the team some good to get up from their desks and physically help with one of the many projects Micah are involved with, but when we asked how we could help they said they didnt need people to pack boxes, they actually needed someone to help build a platform so, although it meant we are back at our desks, its actually the perfect fit and probably where we can give the most benefit. said Chris Thompson, Technical Lead and Managing Director of Zeroseven.
