22.01.2022 "Architecture is the thoughtful making of space", Louis Kahn.- Stay tuned to see all about this beautiful project in Bellevue Hill.

21.01.2022 "Welcome to Dover Heights".- Stick around for more information about this beautiful project on days to come.

20.01.2022 Our clients, a young family, approached us, as we had already completed 2 family homes for the parents, where Tally grew up as a young girl. The existing house was well designed and solidly built, with great bones, albeit somewhat tired and worn. Architecturally, it already had great exterior forms and lines which we sought to optimise by rendering the ordinary light yellow face brick, and painting it with a tonal contrasting exterior colour palette. Ably built by GPM Cons...tructions http://www.gpmconstructions.com.au, we incorporated some interventions and additions to improve the functionality and impact of some of the details in the home. Central to the layout is what we like to call the great hall, a substantial dining space complete with a new fireplace and side courtyard, which is perfect for the large dinners and family gatherings held in the home. We were fortunate to not only design the architecture, but also the interiors, the main component of this renovation. Our work covered detailed design of all the joinery, and the selection and built-in finishes, colours feature lights and materials. We also assisted with the selection of the core soft furnishings including tables chairs, couches, curtains, wallpaper and the like. A lot of the furniture was sourced and supplied by Spiros Delli of Dellis Furniture https://www.dellisfurniture.com. This fusion of architecture and interior architecture, has produced a beautifully co ordinated home both inside and out.

19.01.2022 Did we get your attention with our speedy time lapse vignette? Heres more detail. We were privileged to have been commissioned to design the renovations for this recently awarded heritage apartment building in Potts Point. It has been 4 years in the making, with the dining/living/bedroom areas completed 2 years ago, and the kitchen and bathroom just completed. Our vision was to respect and reflect the international style of the 1948 building, but with a more contemporary edge. It involved the close liaison with ourselves, the owners hands on involvement and sharp curatorial eye, with 2 sets of committed and professional builders and their tradespeople. We got to wear both our architects and interiors architects hats to bring this dream project together. Take a peak with more to follow in our new website.

17.01.2022 We initially were commissioned by the previous owners, who then decided to sell rather than build. They recommended us to the new owners, who wanted something much more substantial for themselves and their extended family. The property, a small cottage, has an unusual layout in that the block is triangular in shape, with the pointy end addressing the junction of 2 streets. Unusually one entire street front was right on the boundary, providing a challenge to optimise light, wh...ile maintaining privacy. We kept the lower level sandstone garage, gutting and extending the existing cottage, and added another floor. Our mission was to address the two street frontages, articulating the forms in a cubic manner. We administered the building contract, working closely with David Mecklar, who were very co operative and collegiate, and they ably delivered the project in good time with great results as attested by the clients (see review below) The owners run a successful baking business, and love to entertain at home, catering for up to 50 guests, so the public living spaces and kitchen were a priority. In designing the kitchen, such is the wifes love of cooking, every single kitchen appliance, plate, platter and utensil was measured, with the resulting kitchen designed to accommodate each and every piece. We also developed the interiors, particularly the public spaces, with the very distinct brief for a black and white colour pallette. We selected most of the furnishings and lighting and worked closely with Spiro Delli of Dellis furniture https://www.dellisfurniture.com, in custom designing an extendable table that seats from 8 to 24 people, no mean feat. CLIENT REVIEW: Michael Folk Architects and Interiors were inherited together with the home that we purchased and a DA in hand. Both the DA and home were wrong!!!! Michael proved to be unbelievably creative as he had to recreate whatever hard work he had put into the previous plans and resubmit another DA to our specifications. This journey was one of the best experiences of our lives, as we were told how awful it is to build..... On the contrary, Michael made it the most exciting time of our lives, helping us select finishes , advising us of spaces, assisting me with a kitchen I've waited for all my life by physically measuring all my platters!!!! It was a total pleasure working with him, so much so, that I would love to do this again!!!!! Michael is organised, efficient, and a total perfectionist and we would recommend him to anyone who like a home that they love. We have lived in our home for 2 years and there is not one thing that we can say that we "should have done , or could have done" as our architect did it all!!!!!

15.01.2022 It has been such a joy and delight to be able to focus the time and effort on the smallest room of this home, the guest washroom, originally designed by us and built around 18 years ago. Our clients have done a major refurbishment of their timeless Mediterranean inspired home on a hill overlooking the ocean. The oceanside location prompted the beautiful colour and material palette. Our clients were... intimately involved with every selection in this tiny room, producing a jewel like artisanal grotto that literally glows. Mother of pearl mosaic tiles contrast with the stunning indigo blue pained walls with white timber wainscoting with simple small marble floor tiles. The basin is slotted into an arched alcove underneath the stair case. A crystal central pendant light has the effect of a disco ball in the room. After many fruitless hours researching off- the-shelf elegant small wall lights, our client commissioned their nephew, architect Jerome Frummer, to design and make them, with stunning results. A lovely twist in this commission is the fact that Jerome spent time as a student architect in our studio some years ago. The project was ably and professionally built by in Bathroomsinstyle in Woollahra http://bathroomsinstyle.com.au/ See more

09.01.2022 Michael frequently walks past this laneway close to the office. It presents a real dichotomy of beauty and the bizarre A terracotta coloured boundary wall has a creeper, with the delicate tracery of the branches exposed in the winter while in the summer, its bountiful leafy coverage, is further adorned with a lovely quote from Leonard Cohen. We loved the moving recent biopic of Cohen and his muse Leonard and Marianne, watch it if you can! A bizarre feature adjacent to the ...wall is this rear courtyard the guard towers and the sign Arbeit Mach Frei ( Work makes you free) from the Auschwitz/Birkenau Concentration Camp. If anyone knows this genesis of this , do let us know. This is especially relevant with the 75th anniversary of the camp, and a reminder many people today face racially-based persecution with the most visible beingthe Muslim Rohingya people in Myanmar and the Uyghurs in China. On a happier note, watch this space for one of our premier homes now on the market in Dover Heights.

07.01.2022 Michael Folk architects and interiors is always thrilled to support good causes, in this case former staff member, architect Ignacio Pistone is joining Habitat for Humanity Australia as a volunteer overseas during Easter/Anzac break for a building project in Lautoka,Fiji. The above mentioned project will provide 150 families with decent housing solutions. Please check the shared link and help him make this happen, any contribution will be appreciated!!!

06.01.2022 We recently completed an elegant alteration to a beautiful federation home in Mosman. ( post to follow when photoshoot complete) The guest bathroom is finished in beautiful grey/black geometric patterned floor tiles , with crisp white waste high wainscotting below dove grey painted walls. this references the federation past of the home. We commissioned architectural student Jojo Nicholas to complete 3 art pieces, using her signature black and white cardboard cutout art, featuring native flora. They are now being framed to hang in this guest bathroom on the painted wall surfaces. You can follow Jojo on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/seco.art/

05.01.2022 We are proud to announce that one of our most beloved clients and their home was featured in the Mansion section of the recent Saturday July 14th edition of The Australian, in a story written by journalist Judy Barouch. We are so happy to have been part of this project and inspiring story, working aside to side with our clients and their needs is why we are passionate about what we do, and to get such terrific feedback makes us feel a part of their lives and dreams. This story not only shows that hard work can take you places, but pursuing your dreams will make a difference. Welcome to Mama Kazs home, where the best baking and meals are forged.-

05.01.2022 Michael Folk Architects& Interiors wishes you a Happy New Year 2018.- -

02.01.2022 Meet the team behind the brand.-

02.01.2022 NEW YEAR 2020 PART 1 We are now back on board after a summer break. This has been bittersweet, with the spectre of the drought and bushfires resulting in the loss of life, property, wild life, livelihoods and even a Canadian airplane, took some of the lustre off the break. This pause has given Michael some time for reflection on nature and our built environment. Even in high summer, the offices immediate environment offers inspiration for some planned painting during the winter months.

02.01.2022 This is our fourth project with the owners spanning over some 20 years. They engaged us to redevelop a beautiful art deco home on a hill, with commanding harbour views. We were engaged to remodel the existing red brick art deco double story home with work to be undertaken in 3 stages. Having had such a long relationship, we have developed a deep understanding of their requirements, preferences and style, with focused and strong input from both partners. Stage one was to devel...op a masterplan incorporating opening up the existing dwelling, creating en suites to each of the existing entry level bedrooms, and developing the rear garden and pool. In Stage 2 we have redeveloped the garage into a double garage, redesigned the front garden and reworked the main entry at street level, this incorporates complex engineering to be undertaken by mining specialists, with a new underground tunnel providing access to the lower level entry with a new lift. A new laundry is to be located in the tunnel, so the new kitchen will be expanded into the old laundry space at the rear, to open onto the lush rear terrace and garden The final stage is a new master suite and deck on a new 3rd level providing commanding views of the harbour and district. Architecturally, the intent has been to honour the art deco origins of the home, utilising the curved walls and detailing. Stage one is now complete, with stage 2 about to commence. Once this is complete, the new master suite pavilion on the roof shall commence. The cellular layout has been opened up, affording access to the views from most of the main entry level, with the rear family room opening up to the new patio and pool. We developed the landscape design, with its new geometry reflecting the curved details so strongly represented in the original home. Extensive terracing and the pool surrounds have been finished in a beautiful hand made stone crazy paving. The new upper floor pavilion will maintain the curved geometry in plan, further developing this into a sculptured angled and curved roof. With Stage one complete, Stage 2 is about to commence. Once complete the new upper floor pavilion shall be built.

01.01.2022 AUTUMN IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER!!! I so enjoy my daily walks to the office, giving time and space between home and work. I have become obsessed with the paperbark trees I encounter on my walks. Each and every tree presents extraordinary beauty, colour, texture and variety. Now that Autumn is clearly in the air, I have decided to get back into painting over the coming winter, and am planning a series of paintings capturing these trees. Watch this space in the coming months for my work in progress.
