In general: - Ice should be applied to a fresh or acute musculoskeletal injury (sprain/strain) for 10-15 minutes on and off to reduce swelling and inflammation. This can be done over the course of 72 hours.... - Heat Should be applied to stiff muscles and joints to improve blood flow to those areas before exercise or 1-2 days after exercise if muscle soreness sets in. Heat helps to relax the muscles and improve joint range of motion.
