23.01.2022 Congratulations to all involved! This looks great.
17.01.2022 I've just come back from a number of field trips for Northern Australia Environmental Resources Hub projects and I will be posting some photos that demonstrate the great work the Hub's researchers and our partners are doing to improve environmental management across northern Australia. Last week I was in Kakadu National Park for a project on Indigenous indicators of healthy country. This research has been co-developed with an indigenous research committee and is being done jo...intly with Kakadu Traditional Owners, Parks Staff and the Njanjma Rangers . The project is led by Cathy Robinson from CSIRO and researchers on the team are Jen Macdonald from Riel Cdu , Samantha Setterfield and me from UWA Research and Justin Perry Ju Per also from CSIRO. Part of the project involves trials on the removal of Para grass a weed found in some river and floodplains in northern Australia including Kakadu. The trials have been remarkably successful, and Traditional Owners are delighted that areas that were lost to weeds for decades are now teeming with native plants and animals. Last week the research team was back working with Traditional Owners to measure the changes since the weeds were removed and we had the opportunity spend a day with the Federal Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley MP as part of her recent visit to Kakadu. The Minister was very impressed with this example of NESP research leading to positive on-ground outcomes for the environment and Traditional Owners. The results from these small-scale trials provide a great foundation for a larger scale removal of Para grass from key sites that are important for biodiversity and bush-tucker. David Karoly Earth Systems and Climate Change Hub shared some frightening stats about the future climate in the north, Brendan Wintle Threatened Species Recovery Hub presented their Hub's work in the north and Sheriden Morris NESP TWQ Hub kicked off the questions. Very warm reception from the audience in stark contrast to the -4 degrees outside at 7am!
03.01.2022 This newsletter was posted last month but it gives you a good idea of the NESP Northern Hub's current research. https://mailchi.mp/bb3331823047/nesp-northern-hub-news
