25.01.2022 Self-Compassion involves reflecting on our self-talk and asking, would I speak to my best friend like that if they had a problem and needed help? Treat yourself with the compassion and kindness that you would others, and forgive yourself for your mistakes. #selfconfidence #selfesteem #selfcompassion #clinicalpsychology

25.01.2022 Self-care Sunday! Self-care isnt always bubble baths and and watching Netflix. Sometimes its holding ourselves accountable and doing our taxes, or making a plan to achieve a dream or a goal. The most important part about self-care is balance. We need to do a variety of things each day to look after ourselves. We need to listen to our bodies, but sometimes we need to know when to push ourselves and feel uncomfortable. It can be very hard to tell the difference sometimes! Having someone on board with our goals and plans can help, someone to act as a coach and to help keep us accountable. A psychologist is someone who can help you stay on track and take care of yourself while still reaching your goals! . #selfcaresunday #selfcare #clinicalpsychology #psychology #psychologist #mentalhealth #wellbeing @ Hobart, Tasmania

22.01.2022 Acceptance is recognising who we are today and accepting all parts of that, rather than the ideal version of ourselves we want to be tomorrow. #selfconfidence #selfesteem #selfacceptance #clinicalpsychology

22.01.2022 One of the most effective ways of improving our confidence is standing in "power poses". Studies have shown standing up straight and putting our hands on our hips releases endorphins and reduces our cortisol levels making us feel more confident. #selfconfidence

21.01.2022 To wrap up my week of defusion exercises, here is a description of the classic original defusion exercise: Leaves on a Stream. Close your eyes and focus on your breath. Imagine a gentle stream flowing past you. Every time a thought pops into your head, place that thought onto a leaf and let it float away. Imagine all of your thoughts floating down the stream. ... I hope youve enjoyed my series on Defusion! Please stay tuned for my next series, coming very soon! See more

21.01.2022 This episode is about recognising that our brain is doing the best it can but that doesnt always mean its being helpful. This is a playful strategy for defusing from our thoughts. #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #clinicalpsychology #defusion

20.01.2022 The second step towards Self-Confidence is Self-Compassion. After we have done some exploration of ourselves and learned to understand ourselves, including the parts we dont like so much, the second step is to be kind to ourselves. Talk to yourself about your shortfalls and mistakes as if you were talking to your best friend. Dont beat yourself up over "shoulds" and "what-ifs". #selfcompassion #selfacceptance #selfconfidence #selfesteem

19.01.2022 Special bonus defusion episode. Imagine your thoughts like waves. Sometimes they are calm and sometimes angry. But they always come and go. Listen to the waves for a moment, then let them go once they hit the shore and receed back to the ocean. #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #defusion #clinicalpsychology

18.01.2022 Once we have learned to understand our inner worlds and have some compassion for ourselves, the next step is acceptance of who we are. This doesnt mean necessarily settling for behaviour we want to change, but it does mean focusing on the present rather than beating ourselves up about the past. #selfacceptance #selfconfidence #selfesteem #clinicalpsychology

18.01.2022 Step 1 on the path to self-confidence is self-exploration. In order to understand ourselves and start to accept our strengths and weaknesses, we first need to explore and get to know our thoughts and feelings. #selfconfidence #selfesteem #clinicalpsychology

18.01.2022 We all have days in which our feelings get the better of us. But have you ever wondered why we have emotions or why they play such a significant role in our lives? Check out my latest blog in which I discuss the importance of understanding our own and others emotions.

17.01.2022 This is so important. Find some awe and wonder.

16.01.2022 Defusion takes practice. There are a number of strategies that can help us to defuse from our thoughts. This is one of the most simple ones: Im having a thought! Putting these words in front of our difficult thoughts such as "Im not good enough" can allow us to feel some distance from this and take away the power of how this thought makes us feel. #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #clinicalpsychology

15.01.2022 This exercise is a really helpful one for imagining our thoughts as always present, but something we are able to tune in and out of with practice. #clinicalpsychology #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #defusion

15.01.2022 Episode 3 of my Assertiveness and Boundaries series covers how to recognise your own emotions and differentiate them from others' emotions. This gives you a choice of how much of others' emotions you want to choose on, rather than feeling loaded up with other people's feelings. #boundaries #assertiveness #clinicalpsychology

13.01.2022 What are the benefits of seeing a psychologist? If youve always wondered why someone would see a psychologist, check out my latest blog michaelayoung.org/blog . 13.01.2022 This is one of the stages of transitions, which often gets lost in discussion. Its important to keep in mind if coming home from another place and this article has great strategies to deal with it!

12.01.2022 Lets talk about perception! What do you see at first glance? A kookaburra of course! But look closer and you might be able to see a happy goat! This is an optical illusion but it demonstrates something very important. We rely on our brains to fill in the gaps of what we see! We take in a certain amount of sensory information then we decide what we are looking at. Many factors influence what we see. According to Saks and Johns, there are three components to perception: the pe...rceiver, the target and the situation. Any number of variables can influence any of these components, such as emotions, past experience, environmental factors and so on. As an experiment, take a moment to observe the room around you. Try to describe it as accurately as possible. Try to avoid any descriptions that include judgements. Now reflect. How easy or difficult was that to do? How much did your brain want to jump in and make assumptions or judgments about the room? Now try asking someone else to describe the same room. How similar or different were your descriptions? @abcaustralia See more

12.01.2022 The final step towards building self-confidence and self-esteem is putting yourself out there into situations where you have to take small risks. Using body posture and "fake it til you make it" are both really good ways to build confidence by trying things that you might previously have been afraid of trying. Thanks for tuning in to this series! Stay tuned for the next series on Assertiveness and Boundaries, coming soon!! #selfconfidence #selfesteem #clinicalpsychology

12.01.2022 The seven second rule is a simple method for stopping the spread of fake news and misinformation. The process is simple. Wait seven seconds before sharing something. In those seven seconds take a look and see whether it seems credible. If you have any doubts at all, dont share it, OR check against a fact checking website.

11.01.2022 Thank you Smiling Mind for surveying the nation's mental health. It's no doubt 2020 has been a challenging year all round, but one positive is the widespread recognition of the need to put in place strategies to look after our mental health. Check out the summary here.

09.01.2022 New blog post! This time Ive written about the psychological impacts of the 2020 pandemic so far on all of us, and also the incredible resilience we have if we reflect on how far we have come. https://www.michaelayoung.org//everybody-hurts-sometimes-t

08.01.2022 Australians living in rural and remote areas face greater challenges when it comes to mental health. Not only are there additional stressors on people living remotely but there are also limited local resources. Did you know that you can access psychology services fully online if you live in a rural or remote area with medicare rebates, with no need for a face to face appointment? If you live in an MM4+ region you can access psychological services through medicare completely online. Additionally, currently due to the Covid-19 restrictions, anyone can access psychological services online with a medicare mental health care plan. Contact me for more information about online psychological services. https://www.abc.net.au//mental-health-system-lea/12414988

04.01.2022 What helps you to feel more confident? For me, its wearing something I feel comfortable in, putting on some lipstick, standing up tall, looking people in the eye and smiling. But the most important thing that helps me is being around people who give me energy, inspire me and make me laugh. #selfconfidence

04.01.2022 What topics would you like to see me do a web series on? Is there something youve been struggling with? Something youve read about but want to know more? Something you have always wanted to know about what clinical psychologists do? Let me know! #clinicalpsychology

04.01.2022 Gratitude is something that I have a lot of mixed feelings about. I think it can be incredibly useful, but due to its usefulness and trendiness, it can be taken out of context and touted as a cure-all. When used in the right context, it can be a great way of reframing a situation and having a positive outlook on life. However in the context of grief, loss, depression or anxiety, it can be extremely invalidating of those real emotions if used inappropriately. Finding a balance between acknowledging our thoughts and feelings, and showing gratitude is the key. Check out my latest blog post for more ideas on this topic and how to tread the fine line between gratitude and acknowledgement. https://www.michaelayoung.org/blog

04.01.2022 This technique is one I frequently use with clients to help detach themselves from their thoughts and take their power away. Have a try and see how it works for you! #defusion #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #clinicalpsychology

04.01.2022 Repost from www.copeholic.com This image demonstrates the difference between healthy and unhealthy boundaries. When we lack boundaries, we take on others' emotions as our own. When we set boundaries we keep our own perspective on other people's problems. #assertiveness #boundaries #clinicalpsychology

03.01.2022 Most of us know about the food pyramid, which tells us which foods to eat the most of and which to eat less often. Did you know that there is a Healthy Mind Platter, which, similarly, tells us what we need to do the most of, but in this case to keep a healthy mind rather than healthy body. The healthy mind platter was invented by @drdansiegel and outlines seven activities, based on neuroscientific research, that we should do every day to keep our minds as healthy as possible.... Before you wonder how on earth you can fit seven extra activities into your day, dont worry! You are probably already doing most of these activities. The seven activities are: physical time, connecting time, sleep time, down time, focus time, play time and time in. If youd like to know more about how to incorporate these into your life, please check out my latest blog, https://www.michaelayoung.org/blog . #healthymind #mentalhealth #psychology #clinicalpsychologist #neuroscience @ Hobart, Tasmania See more

01.01.2022 What are the steps towards self-confidence? First we need to start with exploring and understanding our inner world. We then need to have compassion for our mistakes and the parts of ourselves that we might not like so much. The next step is acceptance of all of the parts of ourselves. Finally we can begin to feel more confident to decide how we want to live! #selfconfidence #selfesteem #selfcompassion #selfacceptance
