25.01.2022 Virtual communication. It's here to stay. And we must adjust and get comfortable if we want to retain executive presence and remain credible. "Make a positive first impression." "Realize which nonverbal habits get in your way."... "Send both sets of leadership presence signals." 25.01.2022 Is "charisma" a leadership trait you wish for? But struggle to even identify what it means, let alone how to "be" it? I loved this descriptor from Russell Brand of what it is to be charismatic. Charisma is a highly sought after trait in most leaders. And yet it remains elusive, misunderstood, and often unobtainable for most.... Russell's interpretation - to be utterly present and of complete service to those you are with, whether that be 1 or many, without any hope of gaining, receiving, or winning - hit the nail on the head for me. When I think of those who truly captivate me, those who leave me with a sense of deep connection and impact, and wanting more, this describes exactly how they are. Are you of service to you, or to others? . . . . . #firstimpressions #executivepresence #executiveimage #leadershipcommunication #charisma

22.01.2022 This is deeply concerning for all of us. For clients in the public eye, it is a real threat. 21.01.2022 A (for me powerful) quote from the wonderful Schitt's Creek producer, writer, and actor Daniel Levy, speaking about the wardrobe of the equally wonderful character, Moira Rose (and possibly best-dressed woman on TV?!) played by Catherine O'Hara. . . .... . . #firstimpressions #professionalimage #visualappearance #communication #bodylanguage #schittscreek See more
19.01.2022 Who’s feeling fatigued, ‘zoomed out’? 13.01.2022 Is your digital profile Google-worthy? This article highlights the importance of a strong and consistent digital footprint, particularly when job hunting, and offers some great tips for reviewing yours. Here's one:... If you want your Google résumé to be complete, use the same name everywhere you publish information about yourself. For example, you don’t want to use Barbara Thomas on your resume, Barbara S. Thomas on LinkedIn, Barb Thomas on Twitter, and BB Thomas on Instagram. This will confuse your audience and fragment your visibility. Instead, use one name and one title to keep things consistent." One I'd add to the consistency check is the use of née. . . . . . #firstimpressions #executiveimage #digitalfootprint #jobhuntingtips
13.01.2022 The increase in online activity following COVID presents the opportunity for leaders to elevate their personal brand and tell their story to have a voice. Here are 4 ways to consciously and deliberately share your talents with the world online. 1 Write content. ... Promote your work or the causes you are passionate about by starting a blog, writing an eBook, publishing articles, or contributing to thought-leadership discussions. It shows you know your industry and offers the valuable opportunity to share your personal experience and perspective. 2 Host online events. Design and launch recorded or live and interactive webinars, workshops, or meet-ups. It’s a great way to build trust and likeability as people connect with the ‘real you’, and build a community of loyal followers and prospective clients. 3 Seek out opportunities to be interviewed. Appearing as a guest or interviewee for someone else's blogs, podcasts, videos or webinars is a way to promote your work in a conversational way, and introduces you to new and broader communities. By association of the interviewer, you’ll also gain immediate credibility and influence as an expert in your field. 4 Be a voice of positivity and optimism. It won’t be for everyone. But as a leader or business owner with a voice, you are in a unique and responsible position to positively influence others during these uncertain times. Your positivity, wisdom, and optimism will help others to proactively navigate their lives and speaks to your insight, confidence, strength, and courage. . . . . . #digitalfootprint #executivepresence #executiveimage #personalbrand #professionalimage #firstimpressions
12.01.2022 I've been so intrigued by the social support for dressing down and going 'au natural' in business since COVID. Particularly the idea of this approach being more 'authentic'. For me personally, dressing down was becoming a home habit that was anything but authentic. Occasionally, I'd look at myself in the mirror and ask "Who the hell are you, and what have you done with Michaela?!" How about you?... #firstimpressions #executiveimage #executivepresence #leadershippresence #leadershipcommunication #personalbranding #digitalfootprint

10.01.2022 There's a 'distance' that I can't quite yet bridge when meeting people for the first time, without a handshake. I've never been one for the high five in any setting - I cannot imagine embracing the elbow or foot tap, should we need to! A hand on the heart seems to be my preference at the moment. The handshake is a simple but profoundly powerful engagement tool. And yet one that is all too commonly used without conscious thought. Often, my clients are unaware of what the...ir handshake says about them. If and when we're able to embrace it once more, I encourage everyone to seek feedback from those they trust and respect to give honest and objective feedback about theirs. This is a lovely article by Carol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D. . . . . . #firstimpressions #executivepresence #executiveimage #professionalimage #leadershipcommunication #bodylanguage #handshake
08.01.2022 This article by Harvard Business Review offers credible and reliable data that tells us how our audience is responding to the way we're showing up in virtual meetings. Their survey asked men and women about their virtual meeting preferences, expectations, and experiences, and asked to select who they felt were the most authentic, most trustworthy, most innovative, and most like an expert, based upon different backgrounds, clothing, and colours worn. Here are a few high...lights: Appearance matters more than you (care to) think! To appear an expert, wear formal business wear in neutral colours. To appear innovative, relax your attire a little and opt for patterns and brighter colours. Save the fake scenic backgrounds for social events! Whether you’re facilitating a meeting, interviewing for a new job, or meeting a new client, in this virtual world preparation and impression management have never been more important for building trust, demonstrating credibility, protecting your reputation, and standing out from the crowd. What impression are you leaving on your virtual audience? . . . . . #firstimpressions #executiveimage #executivepresence #leadershipcommunication #virtualmeetings #virtualimpact #impressionmanagement

04.01.2022 Yet another example (if we needed one) of how your digital behaviour can cost you your job and your reputation. This time, the sharing of a controversial article on Twitter. Content and context aside, our intentions are, ultimately, irrelevant. We must think way beyond the action we take online - a 'like' here, a retweet there - and consider how it will be perceived by those who are in a position to influence our lives. The risk is not limited to those in the public eye.... We are all vulnerable to and responsible for what we do online. . . . . . #digitalfootprint #executivepresence #personalbrand #professionalimage #reputationmanagement See more

03.01.2022 I loved reading this piece by Dan at Articles of Style this morning. And don’t be fooled by the title. For me, it applies to all genders, even our children. It hit a note, because lately, I notice that there are days when I’m struggling a little to stay focused, balanced and connected to society, when so many are self-absorbed and technology-addicted. Each and every point featured in Dan’s piece is relevant to a professional imprint, or, the impression you leave in the... minds of others when you’ve left the room (be it virtual or otherwise). Social and professional etiquette (or, put simply, manners), respect, grace and humility, they’re all certainly lacking in the society I live in. And it saddens me. When you do meet people with these skills and attributes, you’re immediately reminded of how wonderful human connection can be. Like yesterday, when I met one of the carpenters working to build our new home. His eye contact, listening skills, genuine curiosity, and desire to be of service, were so joyful and overwhelming to me in an otherwise sea of egotistical complacency, a cried the minute he walked away. My husband and I beamed and hugged each other at the simple pleasure of this interaction with one of our tradies! Because this stuff matters! Needless to say, this guy will be top of our contact list when we need further work. Do you ask yourself, every day, what imprint you want to leave in the minds of others with whom you come into contact that day? If the answer is, no, this article may serve as an inspiring reminder. . . . . . #firstimpressions #executivepresence #professionalimage
03.01.2022 We all love jeans, don't we? Personally, I could live in them. As Australia slowly returns to the office following COVID-19 lockdowns, I'm seeing lots and lots of them in the workplace. Far more than ever before. But as comfortable as they may be, they're not always your friend. No one is going to tell you, but they may be crushing your credibility.... Here's some guidance for ensuring they support your leadership brand. . . . . . #firstimpressions #executivepresence #executiveimage #leadershipcommunication #professionalimage #personalbrand

02.01.2022 As the whole market recalculates itself following COVID, with a new dependency on technology tools, the risk for our personal brand is heightened.
