22.01.2022 ‘Not-for-profit’ doesn’t mean we can’t make money... A query from a participant in one of my recent workshops gave me a chance to reflect on the fact that our beliefs really do shape how we act. This is just as true if we believe myths and lies as it is if we believe the truth. This short article is a reminder to everyone who plays a role in the not-for-profit sector, whether as a volunteer, administrator, Council officer or peak body rep, to make sure you understand that '...not-for-profit' is very different from ‘no-profit'. https://www.linkedin.com//not-for-profit-doesnt-mean-we-/ #volunteers #sports #clubs #communitysport #committees #grassroots

21.01.2022 "Who am I? Why am I here?": The question of relevance for the 'levels' of sports governance in Australia. In this episode, Michael and Steve shine a spotlight ...onto the question of relevance of each layer of the federated structure of sport in Australia, highlighting some of the difference between the 'haves' and the 'have nots'. Do we really need state associations for sport and recreation activities that can be organised socially? How do we answer the question about why clubs have to pay money 'up the line' to regional, state and national associations? This episode marks the beginning of an exciting research project being conducted by CPR Group to help find answers to these questions. 17.01.2022 I often refer to this time of year as 'AGM Season'! There are lots of #community organisation #volunteers and #sports #clubs getting ready to hold their AGMs, elect new committees and get ready to ramp up after the off-season break. I get to attend more AGMs than most people, as I'm regularly asked to conduct elections, help pass special resolutions or simply keep the peace at meetings that may otherwise be fraught with conflict. With all of the new challenges that clubs have... faced in 2020, I've enjoyed helping literally hundreds of groups this year already. Without needing to get into the technicalities of constitutions or rules for good meetings here, the one piece of advice I offer to groups that are still getting ready for their AGMs, is simply, be nice! Remember that everyone gets involved in community or sports clubs for their reasons, not yours. So treat everyone at your AGM with respect. Listen to them, speak kindly, and remember that everyone is there to try to make your organisation better, not to pick a fight... well, ALMOST everyone...

17.01.2022 2020 has been a fascinating year for fuelling the flames of committee conflict. News outlets and social media thrive on shock tactics, and with most people consuming terrible news all day long, there’s little wonder that by the time people get to committee meetings in the evening, they are likely to begin in a pretty miserable state and end up in nasty quarrels. In this article, I share some surprising stories about the lengths committee members and volunteers can go to in an effort to make other people’s lives miserable and the secrets to lasting conflict resolution in clubs. #volunteers #communitysport #sports #clubs #conflictresolution #conflictmanagement #conflictprevention #committees

05.01.2022 After completing EVERYTHING in their 2018 strategic plan, the board and staff of Darwin Basketball Association deserve a HUGE congratulations for their incredible, creative input into their new plan this week! The DBA Strategic Plan 2021-23 will bring an amazing level of connection between all members, players, referees, coaches, families, administrators, Basketball NT and the NT Government. It has been an absolute privelage to again work with such self-aware sporting volunteers and staff! #sports #communitysport #volunteers #strategicplanning

04.01.2022 Do you know a Council sport and recreation officer who spends most of their Mondays fielding phone calls from irate #sports #club #volunteers about problems with shared facilities? Clubs that share facilities can end up irate about anything from line marking muck-ups, to who moved their Coke cans in the fridge. And while it wasn't Council that marked the lines or moved the Coke, it's often a lack of Council policies or frameworks for facility sharing that allow small problems to grow into big fights. In this article, we look at how Councils can take a leadership role in setting the 'rules of the game' to help fix, or better yet, avoid, conflicts over shared sports facilities.

03.01.2022 Thanks to the committee members from Strikers Hockey Club for a great planning session last night! This is a great opportunity for members to get engaged to help plan a strong and bright future for the most fun and inclusive hockey club in the IHA comp! If you've got any ideas you'd like to add to the mix, let us know. Thanks also to Brisbane City Council for supporting the development of the club with grant funding.
