23.01.2022 I’ve been down in the orchard with the dogs and my fingers are stained from eating mulberries. Seeker was acting stranger than is usual behind the fig tree and I went to discover what had caught his attention and it was the largest #easternlongneckedturtle I’d ever seen. I picked it up (it was quite heavy) and took it down by the she-oaks to the pond and the dogs and I stared at it until it swum silently away... #australianwildlife
23.01.2022 On the shady south side of our home two plants are making a great plant partnership, lipstick red #doryanthespalmeri is blooming in spectacular fashion for the second time in twenty six years and a few years ago I ordered these #disporumsessile for a client that purchased her own which left me wondering what to do with the leftover plants, so after a year in pots I dug them in and I’m so pleased I did. These are easy to grow and being herbaceous I cut them to the ground each winter and in spring they send up new shoots that look like asparagus, after flowering the stems are covered in glossy dark green leaves for summer and autumn.
22.01.2022 Next week we will be entertaining visitors from @renaissancetours and the @verduousgardens team has been helping me whip and clip the garden into shape in preparation. As luck would have it, this week the kitchen extension and renovation began so the visitors will see not only the garden but work in progress. #acanthussummerbeauty #poasugganbuggan #brugmansiaaurea
22.01.2022 I cannot imagine creating a garden without the softness of grasses #pennisetumredbuttons #grasses #ornamentalgrasses
22.01.2022 Lamarque is a fragrant noisette - and surely the best climbing rose for our climate. Pruned to perfection late winter by @verduousgardens and at its best for our visitors with @renaissancetours late this week. #climbingrose #rosalamarque
14.01.2022 I’ve been procrastinating about tying in the lilies for weeks, and now I’m too late so I’ll learn if they can stand up by themselves. I can’t resist catalogues and this Pink Giant from @lambleynursery is new to me. The common orange speckled tiger lily have always performed well for me and the colour of this from the same family line is divine. #liliumpinkgiant
10.01.2022 Even in the rain my garden speaks to me, tempting me outside to the orchard where the roses smell divine. A handful of mulberries later, my fingers stained, garden reconnaissance completed and I’m back inside, warm and dry.
10.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon I took five minutes from the studio to unwind in the garden and down by the pond found a young echidna following the wired in fence line of the garden trying to make its way back to the bush beyond. I didn’t want the dogs to bother it so took off my jacket and bundled it up so I could carry it safely and place it over the fence. Mission accomplished safely and with clear head I made it back to my desk - what amazing creatures and how lucky are we to have wildlife such as this? #echidna #australianwildlife
06.01.2022 On my way to the stables to feed Harry this morning I just had to stop and take a moment. The garden is enjoying gentle temperatures and regular rain this season and we’re enjoying the benefits.
04.01.2022 Sunday morning and we’re off to a dressage competition but first a walk around the garden. The grasses are springing to life as are the lilies - so much so I should be staking them up and tying them in, but I’ve got a little time yet. The first early poker has appeared and I adore it’s understated elegance and verticality (is that even a word?) #kniphofiathomsoniivarsnowdenii
03.01.2022 My garden is so happy it’s singing in the rain.
02.01.2022 Nothing is better on a weekend Sunday than champagne with friends under the wisteria - oh and pizza. #thegardencanwait
01.01.2022 Misty mornings, warm soil and afternoon storms make for perfect spring growing conditions. The grasses are growing at last and ground space is becoming a rare commodity indeed.
