25.01.2022 Explored Brunny island in landrover this week and found some rough bush tracks .Came across this lovely underfired colonial boiler and steamwinch used in past logging efforts. Made trip worth while

25.01.2022 Right on the height limits of gantry getting crank shaft clear of bed. Flywheel was kissing beam ! Pipework from injector to clack valve was a real shocker . Being super heavy guage copper i annealed it and straightened it out. Then re rooted it to a more original run . Much better i think. Also painted flywheel black to slim it down a bit

25.01.2022 Found my dream vehicle. A 1988 landrover perentie flat tray. She has the works,KLR turbocharger, 2.5" turned exhaust and defender power steering. Took her up to great lake for a run and was impressed how she tackled the hills

22.01.2022 Had a very productive yesterday. My crack riveting team ran like clockwork with only one poor rivet to remove in 40+ insertions. Fabricated a new air control disk for firebox door in bronze to replace shimmy original. Thinking ill fit crown stays with boiler on her side so I dont get burnt welding. As I still have scars from doing crown replacement 2 years ago.

22.01.2022 Getting brake band to sit correctly was enduring. Had to remove and trim wooden blocks 4 times to get brake arm floating in off position. Wish we could still buy leaded paint, hand brushing lining with enamel is testing. You have to do it twice over!

20.01.2022 Welding crown stays with boiler over on side much easier. Not one burn ! Will put front wheels on tomorrow and set her up on blocks . Time to order some boiler tubes i think

20.01.2022 I took some nice snaps of the Aveling at Sheffield after the steamfest weekend. She's lovely I must say

18.01.2022 Complete and leak free. Old and new. Very happy and releaved with result .First radiator under my cap with many lessons learnt. The tube plates shrank 10mm in length after welding the 490 tubes . And thicker sheet than 1.2mm to control distortion next time

17.01.2022 A goat breeder wanted a gate for her house entryway. She asked for something unusual and original. A goat gate fitted the bill and she was very happy with the end result.

14.01.2022 My next client has arrived. A foden compound with serious injuries. Hopefully I can keep working while we fight this nasty pandemic

14.01.2022 First steam up went well. At 100 psi everything seems to be behaving. The pump is sweet and the injector works a treat. Have a few weepy rivets to settle and I'll be a happy chappy.

12.01.2022 Work has begun on the Foden . Had fun freeing cylinder block from boiler .Two steam uptake ports were not keen to leave barrel. The barrel came out nicely from throat plate. Now comes the cancer surgery on backhead and throat plate bottom. I like to replace plate right down to foundation ring and re rivet. It is a much stronger repair and worth the effort

11.01.2022 I'm replacing whole tube sheet. Why wouldn't you when she's so accessible. I can punch tube bores with magnetic broach after welding with ease. Drilling into welds is permissible with NTD testing and great for die penetration right to root centerline anyways. Owner and inspector in agreement. Happy days ahead.

11.01.2022 Just testing the wee wood heater I fabricated for our little van .I'll line insides with refractory clay I'm thinking

09.01.2022 De riveted and removed throat plate area. Typical notching above foundation. Inner plate not much better. Should I cut that out too, or pad weld?????

09.01.2022 I did get her front wheels on the next day . Got totally engrossed in stay welding for days . Its a great feeling seeing her coming together . I had to forge up 6 new dome head 3/4 " bolts to fasten funnel base to smoke box which only took an hour . Hex heads wouldn't do justice . Thinking the crankshaft is next .

07.01.2022 A dairy farmer asked me to build him a poo shover for his front end loader. 2800mm wide swipe with 20mm rubber skirt. Having never seen one I came up with this unit. Fully welded and ready for neglect

07.01.2022 Just fitted a rear 6 ton winch to the perentie. It plugs into tow point and 2 heavy bolted lugs. Fitted an Anderson 175 amp plug for easy swapping to tow ball assembly. This gives me great confidence off road to go anywhere and rescue others

05.01.2022 Re fitted cylinder block and valve gear. Used 2.5mm gasket material for all joints with plenty of dicksons paste. Have been working off site in industrial projects for weeks and will be till Christmas. So only get evenings on the Aveling. I've been spending many hours on the paint brush doing lining work on the back wheels. Keen to get her back on her feet. So I can fit fire tubes and fill with water. Sorry for not posting lately my phone popped and being a technofobe it took ages to get street credit again

05.01.2022 My sawmiller mate Garry Cummings who always spoils me when I require wood, showed me his timber tables. I was blown away. The rarest tasmanian wood he has is beliittling. He builds these pieces or art inhouse .All are made of single trees some of which were over 7' in diameter. The inlay of tiger wood tassie tigers is unique. They sell for 7 to 9000 dollars which I agree is worthy. Anyone interested can contact me and I'll organize a veiwing

04.01.2022 Gave up trying solder to seal tubes. Took me 12 hours tig welding the 980 tube ends . Plates distorted and shrunk a bit. Very testing and time consuming job. But alas the end is in site.

03.01.2022 Fitted winch drum today. Made 2 screw jacks from 1" all thread and she drove on very snug indeed. Fitted a sight glass on pump bypass return line. A visual of flow and water quality. Gear guard came up very smart and looks sharp on the engine. Back wheels next on list

02.01.2022 Cut fire door out , drilled and tapped corner blind rivets thank god for mag drills. Many hours cutting and drilling stays. The color coded ones are for discrepancies in outer box shape. My fire box is true and square the outer is out by 7mm. Hopefully we will be riveting up in a few weeks when i can get my crack riveting team together. Thinking ill need a second large rivet gun to do corners from both sides. Hoping the Don river railway will lend me one for a weekend

02.01.2022 Foden boiler responding well to surgery. I'm confident she'll pull through

01.01.2022 Nice and toasty in the van now. Put a huge fire in to make sure didnt burn down. Flue port didnt get to hot to touch. Very happy!
