11.01.2022 A tremendous personal story emerged after the publication of the feature article about Poitrel in The Age. Angela Horton read the piece and messaged me the following: I just finished reading your article in The Age and thought I'd reach out to tell you a little of a story about my Grandma, Margaret Conlan.... Margaret was born on Wednesday 3rd November 1920. Her father, Phil Perkins, was a bookmaker and also the commission agent for the Moses brothers so Poitrel winning the Cup the day before her birth was a huge event. Family lore has long been that for some time Phil wanted Margaret, his fourth child but only daughter, to be name Poitrella. In later years when wanting to poke fun at Grandma the more cheeky amongst the grandchildren would call her Poitrella. It nearly always elicited a hearty laugh from Grandma who delighted in telling us that it was only through her mother's very strong insistence that she avoided being named Poitrella. Grandma is currently living in a nursing home in Parkville, Melbourne. It was ravaged by the coronavirus and our family had grave fears for Grandma for the many horrible months of lockdown. The nursing home has now been declared virus free and she is currently allowed one visitor per day. We are gathering as a family in the park area outside the nursing home on her hundredth birthday this Tuesday and are hopeful that she will be well enough to be able to come and join us for a quick rendition of Happy Birthday and slice of cake. Anyway, it's not often that you hear stories of Poitrel these days so I just thought I'd reach out and say thanks for your article which gave a few more details of Poitrel's win. Margaret did indeed celebrate her special birthday today and will be barracking for No. 17 The Chosen One in today’s big race as that’s what she drew in the family sweep.
