The resulting works beguile the viewer with a seemingly effortless command of painterly phenomena. 22.01.2022 Congratulations to TAMARA DEAN, a finalist in the Kangaroo Valley Art Prize for her work, "Then the fires came". "I staged this photograph of my children and their cousin dragging a rowboat through the dry river bed on my mother in law's property in Cobargo. It was the 24th December 2019 and we were visiting for Xmas. In this work I was wanting to highlight the futility of the drought, using the boat and dry riverbed as a metaphor for the hopelessness. We had driven down from... our home in Cambewarra to visit, leaving the smoky haze we had been experiencing at home and Cobargo felt like a sanctuary at the time. We had no idea about the growing fires which were to approach at a sickening speed in the days to come. Not even a week later the black summer bushfires tore through the property burning everything to the ground." 17.01.2022 TAMARA DEAN is a current finalist in the ‘2020 Ravenswood Women’s Art prize’ with her work, ‘Solastalgia’, 2020. The @rawartprize is an annual prize that was launched in 2017 to advance art and opportunity for emerging and established female artists in Australia. I spend a lot of time thinking about what the world will look like in my children’s lifetime. ... Through rolling months of living in a smoke and dust filled haze I see the effects of drought first hand and am acutely aware of water scarcity and our changing climate. My family and I live in regional Australia, the driest inhabited continent on earth. We depend on the rain to fill our tanks for drinking and cleaning. More recently with the Currowan bushfire coming as close as 7kms from our home, we have had to evacuate numerous times already this summer and our tank water has now been contaminated with ash. It is truly shocking. I recently became aware of the term ‘Solastalgia’. the pain or distress caused by the ongoing loss of solace and the sense of desolation connected to the present state of one’s home and territory. It is the existential and ‘lived experience’ of negative environmental change, manifest as an attack on one’s sense of place. Glenn Albrech This series speaks to the psychological impacts of this rapidly changing environment. Each child representing an emotional state, a reaction or response to their environment, alluding to the larger world. By way of lighting, an underlying sense of despair resides within the primal landscape. Underexposed and flat in tone, the illumination comes from the children. A: "Indeed it is a Covid reference! When Covid hit and our lives inextricably changed, my way of dealing with this was to... create work based on my own experience of this time. I was very fortunate that I was approached to be the inaugural artist to launch a new regional gallery, Ngununggula, opening up next year in Southern Highlands of New South Wales. 11.01.2022 Our Sydney colleague Jagen Yoon and three university teammates have made it to the top 5 global finalists for the 2020 IBM Call for Code Challenge. It's the largest tech-for-good global competition of its kind and the judging panel includes the UN and the Clinton Foundation (in fact Bill Clinton is one of the judges). And the first place prize includes $200,000 USD. Their entry is "Business Buddy," a one-stop-shop platform for small businesses (think cafes, retail, gyms) to ...connect with government services. Business Buddy is powered by AI that uses data to provide only relevant information to a business owner (such as Covid-19 policies, eligible grants or support services). This means business owners don't spend time and effort researching or seeking out government services and means they can focus on their business. Well done Jagen. Very well done. #weworkwiththebest
