22.01.2022 Do you know the Umbrella Man? It's actually our very own Michael Unwin. That's his silhouette right there on the label. And the reason for for Umbrella Man... ... M.U > U.M. Mike couldn’t come up with something catchy with the initials M.U, so he flipped them. And Umbrella Man came to life. There's always a bit more to the story, whether it’s Umbrella Man or one of our other labels. If you come to the winery, whether you're tasting or purchasing, you can speak to our cellar door staff, or maybe the Umbrella Man himself, to hear a tale or two about how each label come to life. @chip_shots See more

21.01.2022 It’s pretty trendy these days to shop at farmer’s markets or farm gates. And rightfully so. Buying direct from the farmer is a great thing to do. It creates jobs... It supports a local business It cuts out the middle-person(s) And you generally get a more genuine product, plus the opportunity to speak direct with the producer. Guess what this guy is? A farmer. He’s in the business of growing grapes, harvesting grapes and turning them into top notch wines. And you can buy direct from him. See you soon. See more

15.01.2022 One of the most common questions we get asked online about our barrels is: how much are they? The easy answer is: half barrels start at $95 and full barrels start at $170. 14.01.2022 A day in the life of a winemaker. Mike often wakes up at 4am. The new winery at Ballarat, is his dream come true, so excitement and energy usually sets in before the sun rises.... Over a coffee, he’ll get through the admin-y tasks: emails and messages. He’ll do some reading and research about what’s happening in the industry. Then, when he drives through the winery gates, he’ll often head straight to Shed Two to start work at the tasting bench: tasting wines to check their maturity and readiness for bottling. This place his sacred. His alter. Through the day he’ll catch up with staff to run through the to-do list lists: bottling, labelling, wholesale orders, marketing, general maintenance. There’s a constant flow of meetings: with a landscape designer to discuss the creation of beautiful new spaces, a media representative keen to talk about his traditional yet innovative approach, a local business stocking up on wines for a special event. Then you might find him out in the paddocks, planting new vines. Or maybe potting up plants that serve an aesthetic or practical purpose. He’ll often finish the day with a walk or a drive around the property; taking in what’s already created and what is still to come... See more

06.01.2022 We must be marbles. We keep marbles in our wine tasting bottles. And we are so excited that we will be back to offering tastings this weekend! When Michael was in his twenties, he spent several years in Europe learning the art of winemaking. ... One elderly gentleman that Michael worked with, used to have a bucket of washed river stones that had been collected by his grandfather (making those river stones four generations old) that he would submerge into the wine. This would raise the wine higher in the bottle and push off the oxygen, preventing oxidation and therefore keeping the wine fresher for longer. Michael doesn’t have century old river stones to use, but he’s keeping the tradition alive with marbles. Tastings return this weekend! Cellar door open M-F 10-5 Sat 11-4:30 Sun 12-4:30 See more

04.01.2022 It is actually pretty cool (and quite unique) that not only do we grow the grapes and turn them into wine, when that wine is ready we get it from the cellar, we bottle it, label it and then add it to our cellar door collection for tasting and purchase. All done on site. Grape to glass

02.01.2022 Ballarat, this is your winery. When Mike and Cat bought the 100 acre property at Windermere, Ballarat back in 2014, they knew they wanted to create a space for locals to call their own. Then, in 2020 within 2 months of opening the cellar door, Covid threw in a plot twist ....
