25.01.2022 Only 11 weeks to go until the 25th Kangaroo Hoppet. To celebrate this milestone, we are featuring 25 different Hoppet personalities. And our 15th Face of the H...oppet is - Jo Prothero, 42, Falls Creek I didnt start downhill skiing until my early twenties but was lucky enough to ski most of the time in Europe and Canada. I cant say I was a natural, (my two half-brothers lived in France and were born on a pair of skis!) but it led me to do my first ski season in Chamonix over 10 years ago. My career then enabled me to live in New Zealand and then settle in Australia in 2007. I was privileged to be offered the role of Marketing and Communications Manager for Falls Creek Resort Management in 2012 and have lived in the resort ever since. My first experience with cross country skiing was a full moon ski to the dam wall with my Resort Management colleagues!!! It was a magical, clear and cold night, and all I recall is a very sore and bruised rear for my efforts, but we still talk about it today... The gluhwein helped to relieve the suffering as I struggled to master the art of stopping without any edges... who knew... I didnt let that deter me and have since had some tuition from the wonderful teachers at the YMCA Windy Corner, and I am somewhat closer to mastering the art. I have tried classic and skating and love the way it allows you to escape quickly into remote areas of the resort. This led me to participate in my first Joey Hoppet in 2014 with a friends daughter (Emma Lucey, 7, pictured above) leading the way. It was a great opportunity to experience the event from a participants angle rather than a support organiser to the Hoppet Board as the host venue. I was taken aback how friendly and encouraging all the participants and spectators were, even the front runners lapping us! I intend to get out more this coming winter and explore more of the cross country trails in the unique High Country surrounds, and who knows, I may even take on the challenge of the 21km Birkebeiner in August to celebrate the 25th Anniversary.

20.01.2022 Only 13 weeks to go until the 25th Kangaroo Hoppet. To celebrate this milestone, we are featuring 25 different Hoppet personalities. And our 13th Face of the ...Hoppet is - James Millar, 29, Melbourne Photo courtesy of Australian Paralympic Committee / Sport the Library / Courtney Crow I started skiing when I was a kid. From the backpack of my parents to plastic skis with lace bindings, the love of the sport of skiing, both cross country and alpine, has grown with me as I have with it. Congenital absence of my right forearm never stopping me or my love for the sport or for being on snow. I cant remember the first year I competed in the Hoppet (Im not good with dates) but Im pretty sure it was a Joey in my high school years. I was talent-spotted at Lake Mountain one year circa 2009/2010 and went on to be mentored by then NSWIS Coach Nick Almoukov. He taught me that hard work and dedication only paid off if you raced to prove it. By that time I had progressed to competing at Europa Cups and World Cups. The maximum distance disabled skiers compete at World Cup level is 20km so it was fitting to ski the Birkebeiner during the Australian season. I have always competed in the Birkie and will continue to do so as a homage to my days on IPC World Cup, despite having retired after the Vancouver 2010 Paralympics. The Hoppet is one of the most scenic races in the Southern Hemisphere. The days when its raining sideways and the fog rolls in so dense that you can barely spot the tips of your skis pushing through porridge-like spring snow, are all worth the pain for the years when the weather gods are kind, and competition is held on bluebird days with not a breath of wind in the air, and firm corduroy tracks lasting the entire length of the race. Even though Ive since retired from elite level, having competed in two Paralympics (2006 & 2010), skiing still holds strong, and I frequently travel when time allows, to Japan and to the Australian Alps to get a fix. Yearly Hoppets are still on the agenda although Ive never been able to beat my times from back in the days when I was training. Every year out of full time training makes the Paralyser hurt just that much more!

10.01.2022 Only 10 weeks to go until the 25th Kangaroo Hoppet. To celebrate this milestone, we are featuring 25 different Hoppet personalities. And our 16th Face of the ...Hoppet is - Stella Ajani, 17, Melbourne My school team, Team Ivanhoe, first introduced me to cross-country skiing at the age of 11. After years of intense training as a gymnast, I was determined to find a sport that could push my boundaries beyond the four walls of a gymnasium. Luckily, cross-country skiing has allowed me to do exactly this. Thanks to the amazing opportunities I have been provided with, and the support of those around me, I have travelled the world, experienced places so rich in culture and met people who share my passion for competitive sport. Participation and determination - I believe that the Kangaroo Hoppet is the best celebration of what cross country skiing represents. I completed my first Joey Hoppet at age 14, still fairly new to ski racing and absolutely gobsmacked at the number of people that celebrated the same sport as me. Remembering back to my first Joey, my lack of understanding of the unwritten rules of overtaking is so clear in my mind. I remember not wanting to disrupt other skiers and trying to timidly squeeze around the outside of them, almost falling off the trail. I can happily say now that with a few years of experience I have acclimatized to the incredible numbers of people racing on the same course and have managed to find the right amount of self-proclamation, as the sport really is about achieving personal goals. Following my first Hoppet experience, I have returned each year for the incredible community vibes that not only erupt throughout the entirety of the event but also linger for weeks after. This year will be my fifth Hoppet, and following a third place finish last year in the Joey (pictured above on the podium), I have decided to test my luck over 21km in the Birkebeiner this year. I am a little apprehensive as to how Ill pull up after heading up the Paralyser but nevertheless I believe that the atmosphere alone will be enough to get me through! Looking to the future, I have no doubt I will continue with cross-country skiing, despite the challenges that year 12 is throwing at me. I would love to maintain my position on the National Junior Team and train with the goal of racing World Juniors, World Championships and many Loppets in the future. However, no matter how many of my goals I achieve, skiing will always allow me to have a great time whilst doing it.
