22.01.2022 This is one for the staff room wall. Parents of autistic children know all about their huge hearts, and also that their big heart feelings can be expressed in not so big ways. Teachers, coaches and EAs working with autistic kids may not always see or know how to read their autistic student. That often them just being there, a small indication easily missed, an offer of assistance can be a sign of admiration, a gesture of kindness. And as every parent will tell you, there’s ...no greater reward than comprehending and sharing this moment with their child. Take the time to get to know all the kids you work with and the rewards are endless Curtin Autism Research Group

20.01.2022 Let them have a go. All of us are guilty of this at some point, but the key is to be aware of it and make active changes when we can. I’m talking about assuming that kids don’t want to do something or that they’re not capable of doing something. ... Take the 3 boys in this picture. They’re all Neurodiverse, and not typically asked to present publicly. However, once provided with the opportunity, they were excited. They took the role very seriously and took pride in their achievements. It would have been easy to give the role to the school leaders, or had a teacher run this presentation. Let’s aim to actively challenge our assumptions when it comes to kids. An easy one to get started is household chores. Let’s not assume the kids can’t vacuum, take rubbish out, do dishes, etc. Let’s give them the opportunity to show us they can. This can be extended to making restaurant reservations, cooking dinner, budgeting the family shop. Teachers and coaches, let’s not pick the highly capable volunteer next time. Let’s provide an opportunity (not necessarily a public speaking role) to the quiet student, the autistic student, the student who doesn’t put their hand up. Who knows, you might just change their life? #PositiveTeaching #PositiveParenting #TeachingTips #ParentingTips #inclusion #advocacy #SupportTheUnderdog #EqualOpportunity

15.01.2022 Today, I coached the adorable Woodside Under 6 Little Nippers at Mandurah Surf Life Saving Club I was working on their sprint starts. Kids thrive on clear and specific instruction when learning new skills. Combining movement with verbal cues strengthens the skill. This transfers perfectly in the classroom too! Move your body while learning, it’s a win win! ... So, who can guess the cues these little champs were given today? #movement #nipper #fitkids #healthykids #teaching #coaching #education #littlenipper #surflifesaving

14.01.2022 SCHOOL HOLIDAY SURVIVAL - TOP TIPS #1 ~ Write a ‘To Do List’ together ~ This is the foundation of harmony for the next few weeks. Your go to for, I’m bored and a great strategy for more help around the house and less screen time. ... Explain that you’re going to draw up a list together, (I used a whiteboard with fun colours - at least use textas, this makes it more exciting). Set your boundaries from the beginning. Mine were activities can’t involve screen time and only cost money if they’re in the wish list column. 1) Draw up a table with the following headings (or ones of your choice) Wish List, Home Activities, Out and About, Jobs 2) Take turns filling in ideas in each column, chatting about them as you go. When it’s your turn, you can input your ideas without them being ignored as suggestions a few days down the track. 3) Put the list somewhere prominent and refer to it regularly, especially when the kids are looking for ideas or you want some ‘Alone Time’. 4) Show the kids where the materials for particular activities on the list are so they can go about their ‘crafting’ etc without too much assistance from you. They can also plan their day amd set up their equipment before bed. 5) Add to the list as more ideas arise Let me know how you go! Post pics, ideas and questions in the comments Jimmy’s list pic is in the comments section. Happy Holidays!!

12.01.2022 How do you find inspiration to get things done? With many of us working from home, it is so important to seperate home jobs from work jobs. I try and make my work space different where I can. Today I worked outside with some cute lights and candles and then had a working meeting at home with a fellow boss lady to push each other along (swipe). We meet once a week to schedule our social media posts (like this one). Be sure to check out Laurel Metier ... Finding inspiration is not always easy, and that’s when well-established habits keep us going. More about this in an upcoming blog, ‘Why Life is Like a Workout’. 05.01.2022 Make the most of holiday time! Let me know what you think?

04.01.2022 Not finishing things you start, is far more common than you’d expect. In fact, coming up with the idea to do something is the easy bit. Finishing it is the challenge. So, what do you do to keep motivated and on track? Have you got a strategy? One that works? Or maybe you don’t even dare try because it’s all pretty hard? You’re not alone there either. I’ve got quite a few strategies. And now I’m focussing on motivation in my research, I’ve added some pretty awesome, evidence... based tools to the belt. I’d love to share these with you and your colleagues, or your sport/gym buddies. I’d happily run you through the motions, (not literally run, but I can’t promise no burpees ).
