20.01.2022 Members of my family in Victoria visited Port Fairy and found this information today. (Tomorrow, Budj Bim!) Aboriginal Dreaming Every deceased person, when bu...ried, is laid with his head pointing towards the island. His spirit then provides itself with a firebrand..and disappears over the intervening sea to Dhinmar. The spirits remain until reincarnated. RH Mathews, 1904. The island you can see offshore is one of Australia's major volcanic Isles. It plays a pivotal role in the local Dreaming (Aboriginal creation story). Captain Grant of the Lady Nelson named it Lady Juiian's island in 1800, but to the Aboriginal people it is Deen Maan meaning"the man" and refers to the Creator. Aboriginal artefacts have been found on the island. Aboriginal people visited the island for ceremonial purposes. Deen Maar, also referred to as Lady Julia Percy Island.has not always been an Island thanks to changing sea levels. Up until 10,000 years ago a land bridge connected the island to the mainland allowing access. Fire from the Ocean Deen Maar island burst from the sea about 6.2 million years ago but its story begins nearly 8 million years ago when a volcano erupted under the sea. This makes it considerably older than the other extinct volcanoes in the area. Nearby Tower Hill erupted only 30,000 years ago. Geologists know that Deen Maar began life under the sea rather than on dry land because it contains pillow lava which forms when hot lava meets cold water. The pillow lava and associated hyaloclastites are the best deposits of their kind in Australia so this 319 acre barren scrap of land is a volcanologist’s dream. The island was once twice as large as it is now having been continually eroded by the sea. Its flat top has been created by horizontal lava flows and weathering. From the Port Fairy website: This island is home to the largest colony of fur seals in the Southern Hemisphere and several bird species. These include diving petrel, peregrine falcon, fairy prion and sooty oyster catchers. A number of small but unusual plant species survive in the caves in the cliff walls. The island lies 12 kilometers south of Yambuk, and 22 kilometers south-west of Port Fairy. Deen Maar is about 2 kilometers in length by 1 kilometer wide, comprising a plateau in height from 3246 meters above sea level, surrounded by cliffs, rock platforms and reefs.

Many do but all over Australia consultant...s to government & industry are creating site reports that support destruction of important Aboriginal sites. This is happening regularly in Ngarigu Country the Monaro & Snowy Mountains why aren't communities consulted properly. Why destroy heritage? See more
