24.01.2022 Lovely way to do a residential footpath Curtain St, Eaglehawk
23.01.2022 Local Government needs to enact a whole new approach to new housing developments which put environmental concerns from shade to water at its heart.... https://www.bloomberg.com//sydney-s-new-suburbs-get-so-hot

23.01.2022 A Word on Hard Rubbish Collection Chatting to Alison (and Bonnie and Millie ), Eaglehawk residents, today about the ongoing problem of hard rubbish dumping in the Whipstick. Alison recently moved back to Eaglehawk from Melbourne. She is amazed that a city the size of Bendigo has no council-run hard rubbish kerbside collection program. Alison's comments:... An annual free hard rubbish collection day is very handy for low income residents Hard rubbish dumping in the Whipstick is likely to be less of a problem if there is a regular council kerbside collection day on the calendar for all residents Metropolitan "hard rubbish day" in neighbourhoods allows residents to swap unwanted articles and encourages recycling and re-use I really tend to agree. There was a limited trial in Bendigo last year which failed to prove that hard rubbish collection is feasible for council. I reckon we need to revisit and rethink the options here as an integral part of a sustainable waste-management strategy which aims to redirect "waste" from landfill and our forests Three-monthly hard rubbish kerbside collection works well in many municipalities. I believe council should rethink the options for such a service in Bendigo. It could be co-ordinated with local business and recycling enterprises so that everyone benefits Nice talking to you Alison!
23.01.2022 Just popping this waste-paper into the appropriate receptacle! Reduce, Reuse, Recycle everyone!
22.01.2022 A Word on Divestment : The City of Greater Bendigo currently has over $30 million in fossil fuel-free investments, and this is a great start It would be even greater if council adopted a formal divestment plan and strategy to complement it's zero waste ambitions ... Council's borrowings, however, are a bit trickier, as divesting loans can be extremely costly The next council should, therefore, monitor loan expiry dates and be ready to negotiate fossil-fuel-free loans Divest to reduce emissions and help fund clean, green energy and industry Divestment is working fine for around 30 councils in Victoria - Bendigo should proudly name and claim it's divestment
22.01.2022 A Word On Pools: I note that the draft Aquatic Strategy "recommends more pool closures". This is unfortunate, and I'm very sure communities would be very disappointed by this evaluation Outdoor pools are an important cool green space in neighbourhoods increasingly subject to the heating climate emergency... Long Gully lost its pool several years ago now, a toddlers' splash-park replacing it. The splash park is a welcome addition to Long Gully, but it does not replace the local pool. I note that the draft strategy cites a prevalence of backyard pools as justification for closing public facilities. I have not noticed these ubiquitous back yard pools in Long Gully. It is regrettable that the Long Gully community lost an important recreation facility for young and old The communities of Raywood, Elmore, Goornong and White Hills should get to keep their pools. Council needs to increase the budget, if needs be, for these essential public facilities Splash-parks are no substitute for a local pool. They are a great addition, though Plans for a wellbeing hub need to be advanced for the Peter Krenz Leisure Centre, lest it become a poor cousin to the state of the art Gurri Wanyarra Wellness Centre I support the retention and refurbishment as necessary of public outdoor pools https://www.bendigoadvertiser.com.au//draft-aquatic-facil/
22.01.2022 Happy to sign the Tandem Pledge on mental healthcare today. As a psychiatric nurse who has watched Victoria's public mental health system spiral into a human rights travesty over the past 30 years, I am hopeful that some political will and action will come out of the current Royal Commission into Mental Health. Mental health practitioners have always known that the single most important predictor of a positive prognosis for anyone suffering from a mental illness is strong fa...mily support and social connection. As a councillor, I will always be focused on what we can do here in local government. https://www.tandemcarers.org.au/families-deserve-compassion
22.01.2022 A Word About Environmental Significance Overlays (ESO) An ESO is a planning control which seeks to protect an area of environmental significance from inappropriate development. ESOs often seek to protect the unique biodiversity of an area close to new housing or commercial developments... ESOs can be used to ensure developers act responsibly towards the natural environment, particularly with regard to waterways and habitat Not only can an ESO be important in preserving the environmental amenity of a neighbourhood for residents, it can also be very useful for protecting residents from ending up with a property prone to damage from flooding or contamination ESOs are very important mechanisms here in Bendigo, a City Within A Forest facing multiple pressures upon our urban boundaries. In many instances, an ESO is a necessary factor in protecting residents' livability and property values

21.01.2022 As we head into the final days of campaigning and voting, I'd like to share this great quote from a great leader. I couldn't agree more with PM Ardern's commitment to collaborative leadership. Whipstick Ward will, once again, have 3 Councillors dedicated to working for their constituents and for Greater Bendigo. Teamwork should be the foundation of multi-member wards. Each councillor will bring different strengths and world-views to the table, and this is great for residents.... I am so impressed by the civility and respectful engagement I have experienced from my fellow Whipstick Ward candidates. I look forward, hopefully, to working with them, either at the council table or around our community in the near future See more

20.01.2022 $1.85 million for the Lake Weeroona playspace upgrade. Meanwhile, the Prouses Rd playspace in North Bendigo continues to go begging. This playspace is in the heart of North Bendigo's residential area, close to families. The Ironbark Gully Friends are a long established, committed community group dedicated to improving and rehabilitating the Ironbark and Long Gully creek reserves.... The Prouses Rd playground deserves funding and attention. The Ironbark Gully Friends are ready and willing to take ownership of their neighbourhood environment. The families of North Bendigo deserve a decent playspace. https://www.bendigoadvertiser.com.au//what-would-you-like/
18.01.2022 Eaglehawk's Canterbury Park and Lake Neangar precinct are looking spectacular, in no small part because we have had full-time gardening staff lately. We need to ensure we keep them! No more short-term contracts!
18.01.2022 A Word on Respect In 2019 a City of Greater Bendigo councillor was forced from office by a sexist backlash to her insistence that council should not be backing a sporting event which used women as mere adornment to male sporting prowess, arguing that, in the 21st century such damaging female objectification is no longer acceptable. Repeated peer-reviewed evidence reveals that social norms which objectify women as passive, pretty, sexualised accessories to male achieveme...nt contribute immensely to violence and discrimination against women in myriad forms. She was right to speak out. It is wrong that she was abused and heckled out of office. This year it is being reported that the COVID19 restrictions don't bode well for female candidates standing for local government. Bendigo has bucked the male dominance of council over recent years, but it is evident that female leadership is still problematic for some sections of our society. I will call out sexist attitudes and social norms which denigrate women as a councillor, in the hope of making things easier for our future female leaders and for women of all walks of life in Bendigo. Below is a very current and pertinent reminder that aspiring to public office can be especially fraught for female candidates. The encouragement and positive engagement I am receiving from my community is heartening, and I feel lucky to be campaigning in an increasingly fair and progressive city https://www.abc.net.au//female-mildura-council-ca/12609560
18.01.2022 Bendigo has a great "Greening Bendigo Strategy" What it conspicuously lacks, however, is a formal Significant Tree Register - a fully updated, easily publicly accessed register of trees on public and private land worthy of protection Many councils have long established registers based on a combination of aesthetic, historical, cultural, horticultural, environmental and social values ... Bendigo needs a Significant Tree Register

16.01.2022 'Tis officially over....thankyou, one and all
16.01.2022 A word on Private Sufficiency and Public Luxury Our post-pandemic recovery requires transition to a fair and sustainable economic way of life, and this requires courageous and committed leadership across all three tiers of government Currently we all accept that we are in a state of pandemic emergency... The climate emergency precedes COVID, and it will continue at spiralling speed post pandemic I am inspired by the fact that there is plenty of public luxury to be had, that there is enough for everyone in an environmentally sustainable economy: https://www.facebook.com/1232692743483053/posts/3033328200086156/
16.01.2022 Wow! I only have 5 corflutes left to get out there. Thanks so much to all of you who have put one up for me - very grateful for you support. I'd love to hear from you if you could host a corflute too. Campaigning in lock-down is certainly different! Hang in there everyone

15.01.2022 A Word About Traffic Calming: It was great to get a call from Jackass Flat resident, Neil, recently Neil lives on Lancaster Drive in the new residential development off Edwards Road, and has concerns about dangerous driving along the Lancaster Drive/Harveys Lane thoroughfare. He has seen a serious single-car accident already having lived there for a short period only... It seems pretty obvious that the wide, straight and smooth roadway is way too conducive to going way too fast within a residential area Wombat crossings - wide, raised, flat zebra crossings often painted bright red or green - at intervals along Lancaster Dr/Harveys Lane, connecting pedestrian access to the nature-reserve walk would enhance pedestrian safety and access and slow the traffic This is the kind of amenity local councillors can insist that council specifies in new residential developments See below: https://www.yarracity.vic.gov.au//red-wombat-crossing-inst

13.01.2022 Revisiting Bendigo's ITLUS - Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy Check out the summary and click through to the video (below) for a great vision for Bendigo. We depend on our cars too much - in large part because the design of our neighbourhoods gives us little choice.... We can change our car-oriented mindset, and, importantly, model this for our younger generations so roads and cars no longer are the norm. This takes time, effort and committed leadership from council and councillors combined 1 in 6 residents of Greater Bendigo live in our rural towns. The ITLUS has not forgotten them, either - it is really important, in terms of equity and access that transport options which don't depend on a car are available to these folk. Likewise, younger people and those living with disability. This ITLUS is a future-focused, socially just progressive vision which I support https://www.bendigo.vic.gov.au//connecting-greater-bendigo
11.01.2022 0645hrs this morning - just been on Bendigo Triple M (3BO to us oldies!) to try to "beat the bomb" "30 seconds to sell myself" I beat that bomb with this Happy voting, Whipstickers!
10.01.2022 What's so good about Pocket Parks? Improve rundown areas Make communities safer Make communities more sociable... Reduce pollution and traffic Improve property values Protect and conserve local wildlife, landscape and heritage Increase fitness and health Connect urban spaces Transform underused real estate Turn residents into community decision-makers Let's have more of them in our neighbourhoods
09.01.2022 Post-lockdown, Elmore Progress Association (EPA) are looking for volunteers and native plant donations. A lot of effort has already gone into clearing invasive species and improving the beautiful riverside. Any enquiries can be forwarded to Elmore Progress Association Inc PO Box 89 Elmore 3558.
09.01.2022 Waiting for the count can be very peaceful here in the beautiful Borough With 13 candidates on the ballot, it is unlikely any one of us will get a quota of 25%+1 in first preferences, so preference flows will be crucial. This is how your vote gets to go such a long way! Proportional representation is a much better reflection of the electorate's wishes.... Perhaps we'll know more by late this week. Thanks to my diligent scrutineers!

07.01.2022 A Word on Habitat Several years ago, at Lake Neangar, 100+ year-old sugar gums had to be removed to make way for the Mulga Bill play-space, and for public safety reasons. Many residents, including myself, felt great sadness at their loss. Most tragic, though, was the displacement of many native species, including corellas, pink galahs, rosellas and sulphur crested cockatoos who had, for generations, relied on these mature old trees for a home.... Old hollow-bearing trees are an essential resource for our unique fauna. Each one is an entire eco-system unto itself. They should be valued and cared for in our shared open spaces. This is why a properly maintained and respected significant tree register is so important. I often hear people complain about the destruction wrought by galahs and corellas, in particular, on our built environment. Below is an example - galahs have created their own nesting "hollow" through the wall of the Canterbury Oval grandstand. We cannot expect displaced native species to refrain from making the most of what we have replaced their habitat with in order to survive. Council can be better at providing nesting boxes and ensuring species habitat is replaced if destroyed. We must maintain habitat corridors for our kangaroos and find ways of better appreciating our native fruitbats. Native fauna cannot be considered "pests". Domestic pets - cats and dogs - certainly can be. Foxes, feral cats and rabbits certainly are. Below left is the preferred home for a myriad of species. Below right is an example of them making do with what we provide to the detriment of the preferred option.
07.01.2022 Letter-boxing in Long Gully and Ironbark today What a pleasure it is to note the fantastic heritage here My Nana and Pop's house looked like this one below... Miner's cottages are what I think of as Bendigo's "humble heritage". Forget Lansell and Quick, forget Fortuna.....these little houses remind us of the labour upon which Bendigo's golden foundations depended Our glorious gold-rush civic architecture could not have been built if not for the occupants of the miner's cottage....and these lovely little legacies grace many of our streets. Let's appreciate and preserve them! Heritage overlays are so important for preserving our history. It is a delicate balance between heritage protection and much needed residential "in-fill". We must not forget the ordinary people who built Bendigo.
07.01.2022 http://www.djadjawurrung.com.au/ I am proud to acknowledge the Dja Dja Wurrung people as the Traditional Owners of the land upon which Bendigo exists, and to pay my respects to their Elders past present and future The work of reconciliation and treaty must continue as a day to day practice for any councillor... Always was, always will be Aboriginal Land

04.01.2022 Today the Victorian Parliament will vote to extend the current pandemic State of Emergency for another six months Despite the hardships this may continue to cause for many in Greater Bendigo, I support the extension as requested by the Chief Medical Officer City of Greater Bendigo council has an important role to play in supporting our community through these locked-down times... Councillors should work with their State and Federal counterparts to plan continued or additional support for local business and residents alike https://greens.org.au//victorian-greens-support-six-month-
