23.01.2022 Media release | 25 Sept|Michelle Steck, Candidate for Bunbury Mayor Rent pain hits sporting clubs for six, says Mayoral Candidate Michelle Steck Bunbury’s sporting organisations will be better off under a plan by Mayoral Candidate Michelle Steck to scrap the council’s controversial "Rent Tier Matrix" policy.... Bunbury City Council has introduced the key policy which forces all community sporting organisations to meet huge hikes in rent of their clubrooms and sporting grounds. The hikes will see some Bunbury clubs pay up to $7,000 above the previous year since the introduction of the policy others have had ridiculous over 300% increase in rent. The hikes are set to financially cripple some sporting clubs that have been the backbone of the community for years and years, in some cases over 100 years. Ms Steck said the rent hikes were grossly unfair it’s simply a tax on the sporting community. Costs of participation in sports is getting unaffordable for families within our community, Ms Steck said. Passing the burden onto parents who are already paying for fees, uniforms, equipment and achievement awards is forcing some local families out of sports participation. Sport is a great lever to create stronger, resilient communities. As the broader community has involvement through spectators and youth learn, team leadership skills, leadership skills, self discipline, goal setting, exercise, mental well being, friendship building and loosing. Ms Steck said council traditionally had a key role as a provider of sporting infrastructure and supporting community clubs and groups not taxing them. Council must scrap the rent tier matrix policy it’s a tax. Council should absorb the cost of sporting facilities within the rates budget. What council receives from the rent tier system is less than half of 1% of our rates collection. It is clearly cost shifting at the expense of our sporting communities. We must scrap this painful policy. Media enquires: Michelle Steck m: 0432 144590
