25.01.2022 Happy Birthday Allie Wishing you a very happy birthday filled with love and all the happiness
24.01.2022 A clean tongue is an indispensable part of good oral hygiene. Brushing your tongue can do you a whole lot of good right from removing the extra particles that may breed bacteria to reducing food debris, bacteria, and even dead cells can build up on your tongue over time. This can lead to bad breath. Bad breath is medically termed as halitosis, and it is a common (and often offending) problem. Tongue scraping is a way of improving oral hygiene and it helps eliminate ba...d breath. Studies show that scraping the tongue can significantly reduce levels of volatile sulfur compounds These are formed when bacteria and amino acids interact, to produce bad breath. Scraping the middle and back of the tongue can help remove the halitosis-causing bacteria. Tongue scraping will also reduce the levels of mutans streptococci, harmful bacteria that causes tooth decay The surface texture of the tongue supports the formation and accumulation of plaque which is why cleaning it regularly is important. While the oral cavity are colonised by over 500 bacterial species, the tongue carries the most load. The tongue is covered with papillae, hair-like structures that aid the sense of taste. When the papillae are covered with a thick coating of plaque, your taste sensation gets affected. Clean your tongue to enhance your sense of taste. To brush your tongue: * extend your tongue * place your toothbrush as far back as you comfortably can. * Next, brush to remove the unwanted coating from the tongue surface. * Rinse your toothbrush, and repeat the process 3-4 times as required Some people feel the urge to gag when brushing their tongue. But doing this routinely does mean it get easier as you go along. Try and relax your tongue if you experience this uncomfortable feeling, try and exhale while doing it. Don’t be over aggressive when brushing either, because you can cause a bit of temporary damage to your taste buds. Gentle strokes will remove the coating from the tongue without harming any underlying tissue. Make scraping your tongue part of your daily routine. The body likes the predictability of doing the same thing at the same time on a daily basis
24.01.2022 A bit of a lengthy post as we expose Tooth wear caused by Dental attrition Attrition is the deterioration of the biting surface of the teeth due to unusual contact or friction. A close examination of the teeth shows flattened ridges where the opposing teeth have rubbed against each other. Though, it is quite normal for the teeth to wear with age, it becomes a matter of concern when there is accelerated wearing down. This ultimately leads to sensitivity and eventual toot...h loss A number of factors contribute towards this process and it is always better to identify and treat the underlying cause. 1. The main reason for premature wear is due to Bruxism- clenching or grinding of the teeth wherein individuals tighten or rub their teeth together involuntarily when not eating. These forces accelerate enamel wear 2. Poor bite or malocclusion where the teeth are not aligned properly is another possible cause as it brings about an abnormal contact between opposing teeth 3. A very coarse diet can also be a contributing factor Attrition leads to: 1. Enamel loss that eventually exposes dentine, leading to increased sensitivity, decay and pain 2. If it affects all the teeth, there may be bite collapse or loss of vertical dimension 3. This puts an increased strain on the Temporo-mandibular joint, TMJ leading to joint disorders and frequent ongoing headaches 4. Additionally it leads to problems in chewing food and change of the diet - such patients are not able to consume chewy and hard foods as well as chewing gum ( which is a great saliva promoter/ acid neutraliser for our teeth! )due to TMJ related disorders Have your teeth monitored by your Dentist for tooth wear on a regular basis. Early diagnosis is the best as extensive attrition typically requires extensive dental treatment
21.01.2022 What causes cavities, and how can we avoid them?
20.01.2022 We normally associate dental problems with tooth decay and inflammation. However, there is also tooth wear that is not caused by tooth decay or disease Clinically described as non carious cervical lesions (NCCL), these develop gradually over the years. They are generally present on the cheek side, that is, the outer side of the There are 4 main causes of wear to our tooth enamel. Namely Erosion, Abrasion, Attrition and Abfraction... In this post, let’s discuss Abfraction In simplest words, Abfraction can be described as breaking away. It is characterised by the wedge shape appearance at the neck of the tooth on the gum line ( see arrows in photo ) When teeth are under grinding pressure , they are forced to bend or flex in one direction and then the opposite direction when the direction of the force changes. This side to side flexing is thought to cause these microfractures especially at this junction of the tooth where enamel is at it’s thinnest Where there is enamel loss, tooth dentine is exposed. Tooth dentine comprises of thousands of tubular channels that connects to the tooth’s nerve tissues. When exposed to an external stimulus, these dentinel tubules allow heat, cold, acidic and sticky substance to reach the nerve inside the tooth, causing pain Pull your cheeks, lift you lips Clean fingers of course look to see if you have these lesions!
20.01.2022 To minimise the impact of coffee stains on your teeth there are a few things you can do that will help by minimising the amount of time the coffee is in contact with your teeth such as: * Drink your coffee through a reusable straw * Drink water after your coffee or between sips to help wash the coffee * Rinse your mouth out with either mouthwash or water after you finish your coffee... * Don’t rinse after you brush in the morning as toothpaste left behind will act as a shield for your teeth Preventing coffee breath is really quite simple! Because bad breath from coffee is caused by having a dry mouth rather than the coffee itself, you can fix your coffee breath in a few ways: * Drink water after your coffee or between sips to help minimise xerostomia (dry mouth) * Rinse your mouth out with either mouthwash or water after you finish your coffee * Chew a sugar-free minty gum Whilst prevention will help minimise the coffee stains, it’s not always convenient to use mouthwash after your morning coffee. Because of this, coffee stains will likely slowly build up on your teeth. Schedule in a consultation with us to find out if we can work a teeth whitening kit into your oral care routine

19.01.2022 Untreated gingivitis will progress and become periodontitis, a much more severe form of gum disease. With periodontitis, calculus deposits expand on the surface of your teeth, edging down below your gum line. This condition causes your gums to separate slightly from the teeth and supporting bone, forming periodontal pockets. It creates swelling, bleeding , pain while chewing , teeth misalignment and looseness. Some patients also have sores inside the mouth, persistent bad ...breath , and sensitive teeth. A discharge of pus from the gums, called pyorrhea, is another a symptom of periodontitis. The infection and the pockets may continue to deepen, eating away at the jawbone until your teeth become loose and fall outunless you seek treatment.

13.01.2022 8 Assume the worst will happen if you fail to floss. While it’s always preferable to feel compelled to perform an action for the benefits, sometimes using pain or a negative image can be a stronger motivator. If you can’t seem to get into the flossing habit, consider visualising the worst that could happen if you’re not flossing.... Imagine your teeth turning brown and falling outNow imagine flossing your teeth and having clean, white teeth. 9 Hang in there. It will take about 30 consecutive days of flossing to build the habit and keep it. Just 30 days you can do it! It is never too late to start flossing. You simply have to be diligent and floss every day, even if you don’t feel like doing it. It’s only a minute of your time. That’s all there is to it. In a few short weeks, you can be flossing every day and doing something wonderful for your teeth and your overall health. Something simple, like flossing, can be a powerful springboard to developing other worthwhile health habits, too. Flossing is a simple task that can have profound, positive effects. Make the effort and you won’t regret it!

09.01.2022 Dental veneers are crafted from thin pieces of porcelain or composite resin and are bonded to front surfaces of teeth. Dental veneers are used to address dental conditions such as: Gaps between teeth Some patients have irregular gaps between teeth which can affect their smile. Veneers can be used to fill those gaps to enhance smiles. Chipped teeth Patients with chipped teeth may be suitable for dental veneers.... Crooked teeth Teeth that are crooked and improperly positioned can be masked with the help of veneers. The result is an even set of teeth that look correctly shaped and aligned with the rest of the teeth. Discoloured teeth Veneers can be constructed to mask the discolouration of teeth. There are two types of veneers to choose from: Porcelain and Composite resin Porcelain veneers (as pictured) are a popular choice because of their strength and durability. Another advantage of having porcelain veneers is their ability to reflect light and match surrounding natural teeth Composite resin veneers can be built up directly in your mouth and can be built in a single visit. This type of veneer can sometimes offer an equal standard of improvement to appearance like that of porcelain Organise an appointment with one of our friendly dentists to discuss your veneer treatment options

07.01.2022 While flossing is a simple activity that only takes about one minute to do, it’s a habit that many people find challenging to implement These are the steps to make it happen: 1 Determine when you’ll floss.... This is the easiest part. The only time that really makes sense is immediately before or after you brush your teeth. So, your toothbrush should serve as the trigger point for you to remember to floss. 2 Have visual reminder too. Just in case your trigger point doesn’t remind you to floss, it’s good to have a backup reminder. Put a note on the bathroom mirror or put the floss out where you have to see it. 3 Start with just one tooth. It sounds silly, but it works. The thought of flossing all of your teeth might seem like too much work, but flossing one tooth is so simple and easy that you’ll just do it. * Over the course of a few days, add in your other teeth one at a time. * You’ll find that if you can just do one tooth, you’re likely to keep on going and do them all. 4 Try to enjoy it. If you focus on the fact that it’s boring or annoying, you’re going to be miserable for 60 seconds. But you can choose to focus on how you’re getting your teeth nice and clean and doing something important for your health. * A simple task that has so many benefits becomes easy to enjoy. 5 Mark your calendar Put a big X on the calendar every time you remember to floss. 6 Remember that you’re setting an example for your kids. Of course, you want your kids to floss too. Remember that they’re always watching you. If you’re not modeling flossing, they’re not going to floss either. 7 Educate yourself about all the health benefits. Do a quick search online and educate yourself about all the health benefits of flossing. You’ll be amazed.
06.01.2022 WE KNOW SOME OF YOU DON’T LIKE TO FLOSS . You maybe surprised to hear us say, we understand!Flossing eachday can be difficult. Perhapsyou have sensitive gums, your mouth is small, or you feel like floss wrapped around your fingers cuts off your circulation. There are lots of seemingly good reasons not to floss However, today there are options that canhelp make flossing easier.... Try ribbon-style floss instead of thread-style. Try waxed versus unwaxed. Try one that’s specially designed to glide easily. Try a different thickness, or a different flavor. Try flosses that come on a handle. Or if you are feeling fancy, Water flossers are an option too! The type of floss you use doesn’t matter nearly as much as the factyou’re doing it! NeverUnderestimate The Value Of Flossing. Make flossing A Daily Priority
04.01.2022 Halloween this year is every dentist’s dream
03.01.2022 It has been said time and time again that coffee can stain your teeth, but if you are anything like us you won't be able to function without your morning coffee . This leaves many people wondering, if I am going to be drinking it anyway, how does coffee affect my teeth? As coffee is such a popular drink, a lot of research has been done on coffee and its effects on your teeth, gums. The most common include: 1. Staining teeth - This is primarily caused by a plant compou...nd found in many drinks including red wine, tea and coffeecalled tannins. A study into the tannin content of tea and coffee found that green coffee contains approximately 0.7% tannins by weight, by roasting the coffee this increases to 1.8%. Whilst this might not seem like a lot, it is still enough to stain your teeth especially if you drink multiple cups of coffee a day. Many people think that drinking coffee with milk, because it is lighter in colour, it will cause less staining. Unfortunately, just because you dilute your shot of espresso with milk into a latte or flat white, you are still getting the same amount of coffee, and therefore, the same staining impact 2. Coffee Breath / Halitosis - Whether you drink it or not, you will be familiar with "coffee breath", however coffee is actually not to blame. As we're sure you know, coffee contains caffeine (that’s why most of us drink it after all), but what you probably don’t know is caffeine causes xerostomia (also known as a dry mouth). A dry mouth is the main cause of bad breath from coffee, not the beans themself, as it creates the perfect environment for bacteria which naturally occurs in your mouth to flourish, causing bad breath. Usually, your saliva keeps this bacteria at a balanced level. With the reduced amount of saliva after having caffeine, bacteria cling to areas of your tongue in higher concentrations. So between stains on your teeth and bad breath, your confidence in your smile is probably a bit shaken after your morning coffee. The good news is that there are ways to both protect against these side effects and repair any previous stains that have been caused by years of coffee drinking. See next post!
