16.01.2022 I'd be remiss if I didn't make a post commemorating the anniversary of our Cobb & Co trek which was last weekend a year ago. (Aug.24-26, 2019). These eight pho...tos portray memories of a bit of the fun we had. Andrew, Joan, Neil Hall and I packed up and trundled out with 5 clydies on the truck, and Lady Pearl our drover's waggonette on the trailer, aiming for Surat. Reg Hodgson joined us for one leg of the journey, and many others were already there, or overtook us enroute between Surat and Yuleba over the weekend. (OK, I'll admit, just about EVERYbody overtook us that weekend- but it didn't matter -it was not a race!) We thought the drought and dust out there was bad even then, but we were still 4 or 5 months off the worst it gave us last year. However, it was a glorious and memorable little adventure. We finished early on the Sunday and came home. Thanks heaps to all who helped - can't wait for 2024 come so we can do it all again!

15.01.2022 Chances are you would have lived rurally, cooked your food on wood, been cold in winter and hot in summer, worried if you had enough food, questioned if that fo...od would make you sick, salted your meat, pickled your vegetables, relied on your horse, hand sewn your clothes*, cherished your two pairs of shoes, and had no way to improve your lot in life - almost nobody received a formal education. Convicts were still being transported to Australia. No-one was entitled to vote and the colonial government had ultimate authority over every citizen's life. The year was 1840, and it also marked when the very first Europeans set up home on the Darling Downs. They were three brothers, Patrick, George and Walter Leslie, and their 'claims' were mammoth - over 50 kilometres in breadth from east to west. Patrick Leslie^ was the instigator after meeting explorer Allan Cunningham at a fashionable dinner party in Sydney, and it was also Patrick whom the colonial government approached seven years later to identify where on his brothers' Canning Downs station a new town would be built, Warwick. We've back-tracked slightly to see the area east of Warwick, Queensland. A 72-kilometre loop called the Settlers Route took us from Warwick through the country that the Leslie brothers fought to maintain control over (and failed). It's a very pleasing trip through rolling hills, historic villages and frequent farmlands. Highlights for me were the townships of Tannymorel with numerous jacaranda-shaded Queenslander homes, Yangan's highly ornate School of Arts and Masonic Lodge, and Killarney, Queensland - the largest town on route and our choice for a stopover. It's super friendly, arty and gourmet. Plus we had a great lunch at the Killarney Hotel QLD! What else could you ask for? How about Happy Hour at a boutique CP where you're guaranteed to laugh? Yep, the town delivers that too at the Killarney Sundown Caravan Park & Motel. There are other camp options also. A beautiful way to spend another 24 hours on the Southern Downs and Granite Belt come rain, hail or shine. That's lucky because we experienced two of three! * While the first sewing machine was patented in 1846, it remained too expensive for the vast majority of families for another five decades. ^As an interesting aside, Patrick also bought the first town allotment in Warwick, and is remembered in the naming of Leslie Dam (the town's water supply) where you'll find a campground and two granite sculptures of Leslie and his wife, plus in 1846 also built the original Colonial-Georgian style cottage that was extended to become the grand Newstead House, Brisbane's oldest residence. 05.01.2022 Day 6 of the Ekka - Part 2 Everyone loves to watch a parade - being part of the parade though can sometimes be rather 'interesting'. Even though the Ekka Grand ...Parades are not quite as 'grand' as they once were - especially when it comes to Clydesdale numbers, they are still a wonderful sight. The Clydesdales have a number of opportunities to be 'on parade, from official openings and night parades to the low-key horse breeds expo parade to the Peoples Day Grand Parade... and until recently, the parade of Clydesdales led around and out of the ring by a piper after the completion of judging. Here's a look back at just a few of those moments. Thanks to Katy Driver and Ian S-K for the photos. See more
