The Federal Government’s Energy Rating website spells out the cost benefits of LED lights, taking into account the cost to buy and run, as well as how long they last. ... Just to give you an idea of how far the technology has come: an old-style 75-Watt light bulb costs about $23 per year to run in the average home, whereas a quality 6-Watt LED produces the same amount of light and costs less than $5 per year to run. Hint: when buying LEDs for indoors go for warm white colour temperatures (look for 2700-3000k on the packet). A cool white colour temperature is the default for LED lights but it casts a cold, harsh light that many people dislike, more suited to a carpark or stairwell than a home. 18.01.2022 Test your safety switch every three months Test your safety switches every three months to ensure they are working properly. Follow these simple steps:... At the switchboard, press the ‘T’ or ‘Test’ button located on the safety switch, if it flicks off and cuts the power, it is working. Check to see which lights or appliances are now off these are protected by the safety switch. If it has not cut the power to the connected circuit then you are no longer protected and you should talk to us, Mick Gordon Industries, as soon as you can. After testing, turn the safety switch back on. Depending on the safety switch type, push it back upwards or twist it into the ‘on’ position. For circuits with a refrigerator or air conditioner, wait for two to three minutes before resetting to avoid possible appliance damage. If your safety switch ‘trips’ during normal household electricity use there may be a fault. Reset the safety switch and if it trips again, seek further advice from Mick on 0448 855 971. 16.01.2022 BE SMART ABOUT AIR CONDITIONING Once a luxury, air conditioners are now common in Australian homes, partly thanks to a lower cost to both buy and run. Inverter technology is now the standard and is much more energy efficient than the old cranking non-inverters. Already have air con? Set the temperature between 24 and 26 degrees to hit the sweet spot for comfort versus cost. And when a hot day is forecast, switch on early, otherwise your air con will work twice as hard to tr...y and reach the target temperature, using a lot more electricity in the process. For every degree you set your thermostat away from the outside temperature, there is around a 10 per cent increase in the energy used by your air conditioner. Not only will setting your temperature between 24 and 26 degrees save you money on your energy bill, but you could save up to 0.5 tonnes of carbon each year. 06.01.2022 SAFETY SWITCHES The risk is real. One safety switch may not be enough! Safety switches protect you, your family and anyone visiting your home from electric shock. They turn off the power in a fraction of a second if a leakage of current is detected. This can happen if there is a faulty power point or electrical appliance, or you accidentally hit a live cable while drilling into a wall.... Even if your home has a safety switch installed, one may not be enough to protect you from electric shock. A safety switch only protects you if it’s on that circuit.
