25.01.2022 Have a Go Day is always the highlight of WA Seniors Week and this year was no exception. A big congratulations to Seniors Recreation Council of WA Inc. for your incredible organising efforts and all the volunteers that made the day possible. Thank you also to Victoria Park RSL Sub Branch for coming on board to commemorate Remembrance Day as part of the day’s festivities.

25.01.2022 It was bloody warm in Broome today - so it was the perfect opportunity to open the new covered courts at the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre. Broome locals will now be able to play basketball and netball in the heat of the day, and train into the night thanks to new floodlighting. Another fantastic McGowan Labor Government now delivered, thanks to the advocacy of Josie Farrer - Member for Kimberley!

24.01.2022 The course at the Jurien Bay Golf Club will soon be back to green the water quality improvement project was officially opened today - which will combat salinity issues and see a new fresh water supply servicing the existing irrigation system. On top of the in kind contributions of volunteers, including trenching the 2.6km of pipe through rocky terrain - club members also raised over $45,000 towards the project. State Government provided an additional $35,000 through the CSRFF, alongside $82,000 from the Shire of Dandaragan. Also made a stop in at Skydive Jurien Bay - Perth - the only full time dropzone for sport jumpers in the State. Though I will have to admit, my fear of heights meant I was quite relieved our tour of the facilities would be entirely land based!

23.01.2022 The $10.7 million Northam Aquatic Facility opened earlier this year has certainly made a splash in town - and it was great to check it out with the President and Councillors from the Shire of Northam yesterday. Visitation numbers have already increased on previous years - with water slides, a 50m outdoor heated pool, kids pools and a shaded water playground providing an opportunity for everyone to get active! Also popped in to visit staff at the Northam Sport and Recreation, WA office - who do an incredible job supporting the delivery of sport to the Wheatbelt region.

23.01.2022 Graham 'Polly' Farmer was an exceptional footballer and an incredible Western Australian - who both changed the way football was played and inspired many young players and coaches, myself included. His legacy transcends the game, with the Graham Polly Farmer Foundation having transformed the lives of thousands of young Aboriginal people. So you can bet I was pleased to join David Templeman MLA, Farmer's daughter Kim and his grandson Cole at the State Library of Western Australia this morning to inspect their latest acquisition - a valuable collection of Graham 'Polly' Farmer memorabilia including his 1960 Sandover Medal, 1959 Simpson Medal and his MBE. These will now be preserved by the library and kept safe for future generations of Western Australians to enjoy.

23.01.2022 Today is the International Day of Older Persons - and it is pleasing to see the Australian Human Rights Commission launching an elder abuse awareness campaign. Elder abuse can be financial, physical, psychological, emotional, sexual or neglect. It is truly a scourge on our communities - and is driven by social isolation, which unfortunately many older people have recently experienced to a heightened degree due to COVID-19. Now, more than ever, we must raise awareness of the ...warning signs of elder abuse - and ensure that the issue of elder abuse is everyone's business. The video is available here: https://youtu.be/khniYQZUOv0

22.01.2022 A beautiful day to open the new Lois Hannay Pavilion and the redeveloped netball courts in Busselton. If the number of girls waiting to play netball this morning is any indicator, these facilities will certainly be well used for years to come! Busselton Netball Association City of Busselton - Local Government

22.01.2022 For quite some time now I have been advocating for a police station to be built in Capel, so it was a real thrill to welcome the Premier Mark McGowan and Police Minister Michelle Roberts to town to officially open the station yesterday. Capel is a rapidly growing community and its station will work well with those in neighbouring towns to cut down response times and keep the area safe. A special thanks must go to the choir from Capel Primary School whose performance of Jailhouse Rock was a great highlight of official proceedings.

20.01.2022 For anyone getting tired of elbow bumping - I am pleased to introduce 'racquet taps' as the newest COVID-safe hand shake alternative. Thanks so much Tennis West and the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Racquet Roadshow for heading down to Collie this week to hand out brand new racquets to ten lucky pre-primary students from Allanson Primary School, who were also joined by Todd Woodbridge who dialed into the school assembly. Tennis is a great away for young kids to get active and develop important physical skills - and it is great Collie kids are being encouraged to give tennis a shot.

20.01.2022 500 NAIDOC Week edition footballs are headed out to clubs across the State and to remote community schools thanks to Football West and the Insurance Commission of Western Australia. Congratulations to Broome artist Hozaus Claire on his winning design in the NAIDOC Ball Design competition - which is now printed onto the hundreds of footballs, alongside the Insurance Commission's Belt Up road safety message. A fantastic initiative that celebrates talented artists from within the WA Indigenous community, while also sharing the Belt Up message with keen footballers all over WA.

20.01.2022 Today is R U OK? Day. It’s our national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, Are you OK?. 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and support those around us. If you feel like something’s not quite the same with someone you know there’s something going on in their life or you notice a change in what they’re saying or doing - trust that gut instinct ...and take the time to ask them Are you OK? If someone says they’re not OK, make time to listen, encourage action and check in. That conversation could change, or even save, their life. For more information and to download a guide with tips, ideas and resources to help you encourage everyone in your community to learn what to say after R U OK?, visit https://www.ruok.org.au/join-r-u-ok-day

20.01.2022 The Ferguson Valley is a hidden gem full of tourism potential so it was very pleasing to help officially launch a self-drive brochure and its associated marketing campaign today. The brochure highlights the fact there is something or everyone in the valley and its surrounding areas - and its all just a short two hour drive from Perth. Australia's South West has done a great job working with the Ferguson Valley Marketing Group and the Shire of Dardanup on this campaign after I made an election commitment to help the area reach its tourism potential in 2017 - I can't wait to see more and more people enjoying our area well into the future.

19.01.2022 During a visit to Donnybrook ahead of the 2017 election I made a commitment to refurbish the town's heritage listed Goods Shed as part of a $2 million town centre revitalisation project. There's been a couple of complications since then, but it was fantastic be on site today with Shire of Donnybrook Balingup representatives to hear some more about the plans and to see good progress is now being made on the ground. Preserving these little elements of history in our towns and turning them into usable spaces for generations to come is vitally important - I'm looking forward to heading back to see the finished product before my retirement.

18.01.2022 It was fantastic to drop by Australind Senior High School this morning along with Robyn Clarke MLA to chat to the principal Domenic Camera and some of the school's student leaders about the $15m worth of major upgrades which have been funded by the State Government. The funding will go towards replacing transportable classrooms with a brand new classroom block, as well as freeing up more space on the school site by relocating the existing dental facility. I've watched the school grow and grow and grow in my time as the local member and now more than 1500 students will be enrolled next year - so these upgrades are certainly needed.

18.01.2022 Even more community members will be able to play at the Leederville Tennis Club thanks to a CSRFF grant from the McGowan Government for new LED lighting for 6 courts that will enable their use at night. Thanks to the club and the City of Vincent for their co-contributions towards the project, and to Tennis West for their advocacy for investment into tennis infrastructure across the state.

18.01.2022 Great to catch Louisa "Bang Bang" Hawton for a chat at Parliament House last week - the world atomweight boxing champion hailing from right here in Perth!

17.01.2022 I always say that the contributions made by volunteers can be life changing - but never is that more true than when it comes to Lifeline WA's Telephone Crisis Centre volunteers. Lifeline WA trains more than 100 call centre volunteers annually - each undertaking 184 hours of training, including an intensive 12-week course and a 12-month internship before becoming an accredited Telephone Crisis Supporter. It was an honour to present a $196,804 Lotterywest grant today to support... the fit-out of the new purpose-built Lifeline WA training centre, which will allow for the training of even more lifesaving volunteer crisis supporters. The value of the services that Lifeline WA's Telephone Crisis Support volunteers provide is immeasurable. Thank you to all of them for their dedication and willingness to give support to Western Australians at the very time in their life when they need it the most.

15.01.2022 This year, Meals on Wheels have reported a significant increase in demand for their services - with many Australians facing food insecurity for the first time. For National Meals on Wheels Day today, I was lucky enough to head out with George, a volunteer in Collie, to deliver meals to Pat. Thank you to all the dedicated volunteers like George who have stepped up during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure a nutritious meal and a friendly visit continued to be provided to vulnerable or isolated members of our communities.

13.01.2022 Caught up with a fantastic group of seniors in Wanneroo yesterday as part of the McGowan Government's Community Cabinet in the Northern Suburbs. A great opportunity to reflect on what has been a difficult year, tell a few stories, and hear from seniors about what is important to them. Thank you Sabine Winton MLA for your hard work arranging!

12.01.2022 In between today's showers I joined Emergency Services Minister Fran Logan MLA to turn the first sods at the site of the future emergency services centre in Collie. The $13.4 Koolinup Emergency Services Centre, named after the Aboriginal name for Collie, will create 130 jobs during the construction phase and will employ 12 full-time staff once fully operational. The multipurpose facility will support the relocation of up to 70 of DFES's high fire season fleet to Collie, it will be WA's first regionally based Level 3 Incident Control Centre and it will also include an emergency driver training school for DFES and other State Government volunteers and staff.

12.01.2022 If it wasn't clear enough already how important a water playground would be for the Kununurra community - stepping out of the plane into 38 degree weather last week made it pretty apparent! It was fantastic to be able to announce that the McGowan Government had committed $3.2 million to build the Kununurra Water Playground as part of the WA Recovery Plan. Thank you to Josie Farrer - Member for Kimberley and the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley for your years of hard work advocating for this project, which will be free for use for members of the community and visitors alike. Was also great to stop in and chat all things sports with host Scotty and local DLGSC officer Maria at Waringarri Radio 6WR.

11.01.2022 WAIS elite swimmers are set to benefit from a new state-of-the-art above water/underwater multi-camera motion analysis system that has been installed at HBF Stadium, thanks to contributions by VenuesWest, Hancock Prospecting, Swimming Australia and WAIS. With 8 months until the Tokyo Olympic Games, these cameras will ensure WA athletes have access to the best technology there is to optimise their performance. Luckily dual Olympian Blair Evans was there to test them out so I didn't have to!

10.01.2022 Fantastic to welcome down Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston MLA to open the new Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety's licence processing centre in Collie today. 11 new jobs have been created to staff the office, which is housed in the former Commonwealth Bank building on Forrest street and has recently been refurbished. More local jobs is always a great result for our community.

08.01.2022 Sound planning delivers better outcomes for community facilities. I look forward to continuing to work with the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale as plans for Keirnan Park progress!

07.01.2022 Marked our 100th event at Optus Stadium this afternoon with the Eagles successfully taking on the Giants! An incredible milestone for an incredible stadium!

06.01.2022 It was fantastic to be joined by the Premier Mark McGowan and Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan today for the official opening of the Collie WesTrac Technology Training Centre. Establishing the facility was supported by the State Government through a $2.7 million Collie Futures Fund grant and it is only the second of facility of its kind in the world. This places our town at the forefront of technological advances in the mining industry and means trainees from around the state, country and world will be coming here to do their training - and while they're here they'll be spending money at our accommodation, at our cafes and restaurants, and in our stores.

06.01.2022 Congratulations to Hugh Rogers on his retirement as State President of the Seniors Recreation Council of WA Inc. after 19 years in the role and 28 years as a volunteer for the organisation. Hugh has been a volunteering powerhouse for almost three decades - establishing several innovative programs and expanding the organisation to eleven branches. It was an honour to thank and acknowledge Hugh today for his tireless service in promoting an active lifestyle to older Western A...ustralians. I wish Hugh well as he enjoys his retirement.

05.01.2022 A sneak peak of work being done currently by Guido van Helten - the artist set to make his mark on the Wellington Dam Mural!

05.01.2022 It was a pleasure to join Netball WA, Shooting Stars: Education Through Netball, West Coast Fever and co-conveners Samantha Rowe MLC and Mia Davies MLA to officially launch the Parliamentary Friends of Netball earlier this week. Netball remains the largest participation sport for women and girls in Australia, delivering wonderful benefits to communities around the country. This new initiative will further strengthen the connection between those elected to Parliament and this fantastic sport - to the advantage of us all.

04.01.2022 September is Dementia Awareness Month and this year's theme is 'Together we can ensure no one faces dementia alone'. There are over 40,000 West Australians with dementia - and I encourage everyone to reach out to people with dementia in their communities and let them know they are not alone. If you are a carer for a person with dementia or if you are worried about your memory, you can access support through Alzheimer's WA by calling 1300 66 77 88.

03.01.2022 The McGowan State Government is proud to support the Perth Lynx, and I wish them all the best for the upcoming season as the team heads into 'hub life' in North Queensland this weekend.

03.01.2022 Great to catch up with sport and recreation industry stakeholders again yesterday after a turbulent few months for the sector, with COVID-19 affecting everything from professional sports to grassroots clubs. The industry exhibited incredible leadership and resilience throughout these difficult times, and it was great to discuss the $300 million in funding for sporting and community facilities in the WA Recovery Plan, which will improve community sporting infrastructure around the State while also driving economic and social recovery.

02.01.2022 What a great weekend it was to officially open Kambalda's new 'watering hole' - following a $3 million redevelopment, made possible thanks to funding from the McGowan State Government. This aquatic centre has been the recreational and social hub for the area since the 1970s - and it's great this will be able to continue into the future with the pool's reopening. Thank you to the Shire of Coolgardie and Kyle McGinn MLC for having me along!

01.01.2022 Congratulations to Yunderup Sport & Recreation Club (inc) on their new, high-quality synthetic turf that I was lucky enough to check out yesterday. Whilst McGowan Government CSRFF funding certainly gave the project a boost - utmost credit must go to the club, who by coming together to raise an incredible $105,000 were able to self-fund the bulk of the project.
