25.01.2022 Tokyo signage. I won't even try to make any "social distancing" remarks

25.01.2022 A foggy morning in Japan not so long ago - and yet, so long ago.

24.01.2022 Happy Sunday! Some more lovely people of Jodhpur.

21.01.2022 A few more of my Iris Awards entries, all shot in India 2018. - A young woman hangs washing across the tracks from the Kolkata flower market at Malik Ghat. - In the back streets of Nagaur, Rajasthan, an older couple trimming moustache and painting toenails. I was amazed that the scene fell into place like this without any direction, and even more amazed when the gentleman invited us in for chai. - On the main street of Bikaner, Rajasthan, I was struck by the assertive body language of this girl and her mother, as well as the laid-back pose of the cow on the road.

21.01.2022 A particularly cold winter's morning in Tokyo in February.

20.01.2022 A couple more from the NZIPP Iris Awards - the ladies of Rajasthan, both taken in 2018: - In a very ancient and quite remote village a couple of hours drive from Dausa we were given amazing access to a family's compound; after lunch the women chill together in a shed and smoke. I used this image for the cover of a little photobook I made that year. - In the "Blue City" of Jodhpur, I believe these 2 sisters were running a small rooftop restaurant.

20.01.2022 Winter mornings in Gifu Prefecture

18.01.2022 Incredibly honoured for my book "In the Shadow of the Leaves" to have been included in this list of Australian and New Zealand photobooks of 2019. The list was compiled by Doug Spowart and Victoria Cooper, and my book was nominated by David Symons. I've really enjoyed reading through the list - it highlights the great variety of approaches that contemporary photobook makers are taking.

17.01.2022 Memories of Japan.

17.01.2022 "Dial Before you Dig" rural Japan style.

17.01.2022 No gun-hunting here.

16.01.2022 The NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards 2020 results are in - I entered a new book and 20 images (some of which had previously been judged at APPA, others hadn't), very pleased with 20 awards: 1 Gold 2 Silver Distinction 10 Silver... 7 Bronze I'll try to post the images when I have some time to write a little about them.

14.01.2022 Happy Sunday! I've recently been photographing in Japan - this is in Ainokura, a village in the Gokayama region (Toyama Prefecture). Fortunately we missed the -14 temps of 2 days earlier, but had plenty of snow cover for the night my son and I were fortunate enough to stay.

13.01.2022 The finalists for this year's RISE International Photography Awards were announced overnight - I'm very happy to have two images in the Travel category, and also very happy to see that a number of my friends are finalists across a range of categories. You can see all the finalist images here: https://entries.risephotoawards.com/compet/rise-2020/public

12.01.2022 A couple of my higher scores at the recent NZIPP awards; these both did well at APPA last year too. - Inside a video game arcade in Shinjuku, Tokyo, in late 2018. - On the rooftops of Old Delhi, competitive homing pigeons is a hotly-contested sport, Feb 2019.

11.01.2022 A couple of my NZIPP entries - both taken in 2018 in Bikaner, Rajasthan. - The first is outside some extraordinary 15th century buildings known as Rampuria Havelis, once home to rich merchants. We basically waited around for interesting people to pass through the scene - this man standing on his freight cart struck me as being interesting. - The second was taken very early morning as the camel was being loaded up. I interacted as much as possible with the people in the area (given we had no common language to speak), and waited until they ignored me and my camera, and I was able to capture a moment when some elements aligned within the frame. I remember having to flip up the screen on the back of my camera and hold it up really high - a camel's head is a long way up.

10.01.2022 Happy Sunday! This was a Sunday in Tokyo, 6 weeks back.

09.01.2022 Only last month, my son and I were walking around in knee-deep snow in the village of Ainokura.

08.01.2022 * Update - cancelled for now due to club concerns around virus risks * I'm very much looking forward to presenting tomorrow night (Tuesday 10th) at the Caboolture Photography Club. I'll be talking about travel photography and creating photobooks. https://www.caboolturephotographyclub.org.au/about-us/

08.01.2022 Today I began writing the introductory essay to my upcoming photobook on Japanese aesthetics. I enjoy writing, but never find it easy. This image is of Ainokura, a village that Ant and I stayed in February.

08.01.2022 Definitely one of the most beautiful places I've been (it honestly almost had me in tears), and I had the whole area to myself. Minashi Shrine in the village of Hida-Ichinomiya, in the mountainous Gifu region.

07.01.2022 Jizo is considered a divine protector of the souls of children and the unborn. The imagery in Japanese cemeteries can be quite profound.

07.01.2022 More of my NZIPP entries - three of these were part of my winning portfolio at APPA 2017. - 3 of them are from the Pushkar Festival, November 2016, all taken early morning in the camel trader camps. It was a pretty amazing time; that was the first morning of the demonetisation, and we were highly unaware of how tricky the following days would be without access to cash. - The boatman was taken in Varanasi several days later; we were really keen to find an oarsman with a look of "authenticity" (i.e. not one of the young guys in jeans and t-shirts) - this man approached me in the pre-dawn darkness and said "hello, I am boat man". Varanasi is an extraordinarily atmospheric city, and being out on the river that morning was genuinely breathtaking.

05.01.2022 Winter afternoons in Toyama Prefecture

04.01.2022 Asahi tree in the mist, in the Hida region of Japan. I'm not sure they would grow here, certainly not to the 500ml size.

04.01.2022 Remembering Tokyo

03.01.2022 Just 3 months ago my son and I stayed a night in the building on the right, eating mackerel cooked around a fire pit in the main room, and drinking home-made sake from a pot with a whole fish in the bottom. The world has changed a lot in the time since.

03.01.2022 Winter in Gifu Prefecture, Japan.

03.01.2022 Super happy to be a semi-finalist in 2 categories (Life and Journeys) of the AIPP Silver Lining Awards. The regular APPA print awards were cancelled this year, but the super-amazing awards peeps put together this brilliant online competition. I highly recommend looking through the semi-finalist images in the various categories, there's some outstanding work on display: https://aippawards.com.au/silverlining/sla-results/

02.01.2022 Tokyo feels so far away now.

02.01.2022 I'm excited about guest-hosting this online photography session on Saturday night:

01.01.2022 Missing the Japanese forests.

01.01.2022 So it's happening again! I'll be helping Seng Mah run another Lens on India Photography Tour in 2021. There's a heap of info on the website, but hit us up with any questions at all!

01.01.2022 Kotoji-tr, the two-legged stone lantern in Kenroku-en (Six Attribute Garden), Kanazawa. Kenroku-en is one of Japan's three Great Gardens and features all six attributes of a perfect landscape: spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, waterways, and panoramas.
