04.01.2022 Warning: long post alert S O L A R P O W E R... The Australian continent has the highest solar radiation per square metre of any continent and consequently some of the best solar energy resource in the world. Australia receives an average of 58 million PJ of solar radiation per year, approximately 10000 times larger than its total energy consumption. However, Australias current use of solar energy is low with solar energy accounting for less than 2 per cent of Australias... total primary energy consumption. Our electricity bills had literally doubled with a new pool and the incremental increases received from energy companies despite making the basic attempts at reducing our quarterly bills. When designing our home, it was important to us to increase our residential energy rating and maximise the overall thermal performance of the house. Insulation in walls and ceilings, double gyprock layers, 10mm glass windows, LED lighting and of course solar were in the plans from the beginning. As a builder, you can appreciate where all those precious dollars are going but in the modern world, we appreciate an $11k lounge that looks great rather than the invisible solar panels sitting on top of your roof that would initially cost you the same! We installed these panels with the view in the long term of zeroing out our electricity bills, but more importantly, a conscious decision to reduce our familys carbon footprint . The panels were installed by local company AG Solar, are battery ready and through the My Solar app, we can already start to see some savings. We estimate that our $11k solar investment should be paid off in 3-4 years as a result of reduced energy bills and our Green Conscious feels good! unlike coal, as long as the sun is shining, we will never run out of solar energy.
