25.01.2022 A STORY OF SURRENDER PART ONE A Saga in Seven Steps told by our Cat Surrender and Adoption Coordinator over the next 7 nights. "Good hearts and a bad situati...on": I got a message about a surrender request while I was away. The only details were a ‘fair few cats’ needing new homes. I got in contact as soon as I got back, and we decided I’d go over ASAP. When I arrived, however, I got quite a shock. There were lots more cats than I was expecting. I could see 10 at least, just from standing in the doorway, with an unknown quantity roaming the grounds. There were the owners own cats, some that had been rescued from being dumped on the street and some that had simply arrived and decided to call it home. Unfortunately none were desexed and so the number had quickly multiplied. It was clear that this kind-hearted family had found themselves in a situation that had gotten out of control, and were desperate for help to get out of it. At that moment, I decided that we’d do everything we could to help them get things back in hand. And that is where our story begins. Tune in tomorrow for Part 2.

23.01.2022 A STORY OF SURRENDER PART SIX A Saga in Seven Steps told by our Cat Surrender and Adoption Coordinator. "The Slippery Slope": What if this were you or someone... you knew? Remember our kind-hearted family? They probably started with one cat too but they ended up with literally dozens. It could happen to anyone. Now let’s have a look at how... Cat’s breed and they breed quick. Cat’s can’t add, but they sure can multiply! If you currently have one undesexed kitty, in two years you too could find yourself with 26 more! It’s an avoidable situation (see our previous post), but can happen so easily, and it is no reflection on you as a person (especially if you didn’t know). If you are in this situation, or find yourself there, here are some things you can do: Reach out for support like this family did. Contact the RSPCA or another rescue. Please don’t just give the cats away, even to friends or family, as this may be great for the current cats but doesn't stop the next litter being born. DESEX your cat(s) and encourage those you know to do the same. It’s never too late to do the right thing! There are subsidised options available such as the RSPCA Albury CAWS program. Again, if you can’t afford it, please surrender to help stop this cycle as the RSPCA and most rescue's will desex before adopting out. Our kind-hearted family is doing a great job, and slowly becoming more CatWise. They have called for help, surrendered to get back down to a manageable number, and taken advantage of desexing subsidies, desexing the cats they are keeping to prevent sliding back down that slippery slope. What about the cats you ask? Well you’ll have to wait ‘til tomorrow for Part 7, The Final Outcome A Bittersweet Success!

17.01.2022 A STORY OF SURRENDER PART FOUR A Saga in Seven Steps told by our Cat Surrender and Adoption Coordinator over the next 7 nights. Support & Education: What ever... happened to the family? Before we continue with the story of our 27 cats, let’s take a moment to remember the people who asked for our help. We are still in contact with that kind-hearted family, supporting them to have a healthy relationship with a manageable number of cats. Understandably, having had so many cats in their house it was in need of a little attention. The RSPCA Albury work with a number of human services and support agencies to help people in our community get the help they require. More often than not, it is a problem the owner is facing that leads them to needing help with their pets. A couple of the owners original cats have therefore been returned to them, health-checked and desexed, to start a new and more positive pet journey. As part of our mission to prevent cruelty to animals we believe in investing in EDUCATION. This family really wanted to do it right, but didn't know how. Lucky we are in a position to help empower them. Part of that will be teaching them how to be (and stay) ‘CatWise’. What is CatWise you ask? Stay tuned to find out more... Come back tomorrow for Part 5: It’s everyone’s business.

17.01.2022 A STORY OF SURRENDER PART TWO A Saga in Seven Steps told by our Cat Surrender and Adoption Coordinator over the next 7 nights. "Intervention": Working togethe...r to get the cats out. With a car full of crates, I headed back to the house and the family and I got to cat-catching. The family were great, but it was not easy. Most of the cats were we’re not used to human contact and therefore unapproachable. One of the owners was bitten just by trying to put one of them in a carrier, and needed to go to the hospital immediately to receive antibiotics. I took what we were able to catch that night and left the family with crates and safe cat-traps. It was slow but steady progress, and after about 10 days (including many trips back and forth collecting cats and returning traps), we finally had them all! 27 cats in total. Phew! Now the hard work of vet appointments and rehab was about to begin. Come back tomorrow for Part 3: Rehabilitation.

13.01.2022 BREAKING: Authorities have raided two NSW puppy farms this morning following allegations of extreme animal cruelty leading to the death of a 10 month old female... Boxer. It is reported that the mother dog was unable to give birth to all her puppies and while in considerable pain, the puppy farm operator denied multiple requests to take her to the vet. She is understood to have died in agony over a period of 4 days while the surviving puppies were shipped to a pet shop. Breeder dogs are treated simply as machines by puppy farmers. Across NSW there will be many others just like her: facing a lifetime of confinement, deprived of all socialisation and forced to pump out litter after litter in squalid conditions to supply the pet trade industry. I am drafting legislation that will ensure our laws are as effective at protecting dogs here as they are in other states. It’s time puppies received the protection they deserve. 12.01.2022 Hi everyone. It is week 5 and Gimli still isn't home. Thank you all for the support but please keep a look out for him.

11.01.2022 A STORY OF SURRENDER PART THREE A Saga in Seven Steps told by our Cat Surrender and Adoption Coordinator over the next 7 nights. "Rehabilitation": A difficult... decision had to be made. As much as we would like it to be, it’s not all happy endings. As soon as the cats started to come in, I started the work of assessing them all. One by one I behaviour tested each cat, to see how manageable they were. Some were ok with being handled, whilst others were very aggressive in their fear. I separated them out and paired them up, trying to make them comfortable. A couple of days later, the vet came around, and we microchipped, vaccinated, wormed and gave flea treatment to the cats that were ready to be handled. We didn’t try the aggressive ones yet, to give them some time to settle. Finally, when the last lot came in, we arranged appointments for much-needed desexing. All the while, I was working with all of them seeing to their basic needs of food, water and clean shelter. Just as important, I was working on trust, rebuilding their confidence in people again to get them to the point of re-homing. Thankfully, around this time, the Branch received new volunteers who were keen to be trained up to help with their day-to-day care and rehab! Things didn’t always go smoothly, though. I was bitten by one of the cats and ended up having to go to hospital with a cat-bite infection. Some cat’s also continued to struggle with high levels of stress as they were not used to being inside and we continually worked on reducing that. Heartbreakingly, one cat's condition - both physically and emotionally - did not improve. Eventually, it became clear that his condition was too poor to rectify despite our best efforts and we were advised that it would be cruel to prolong his suffering any further. On the 08/09/2020, we said goodbye to our poor fellow hoping his last days were better than they may have otherwise been. Come back tomorrow for Part 4: Support & Education

08.01.2022 A STORY OF SURRENDER PART FIVE A Saga in Seven Steps told by our Cat Surrender and Adoption Coordinator. "It's Everybody's Business": What can you do to make ...a positive change? Feeling love is not the same as showing love. If we truly understand the needs of our animals, and the consequences when they are not met, we will want (out of love) to do everything we can to meet those needs even if it means giving them up to a rescue. Another consideration that is just as important is understanding that your pet is part of a community and keeping them healthy and safe, keeps other people's pets healthy and safe. The single most important thing you can do for your animal (and other animals) is to DESEX it. Overpopulation can lead to injury, illness, suffering and death for our animals. Desexing helps prevent all of this. Here are things you can do: - Desex your animal - Encourage friends & family to desex their animals - Utilise subsidised desexing programs such as RSPCA Albury's Community Animal Welfare Scheme (CAWS) - Take advantage of the Keep Track of Your Best Mate Events run by council - Don't take in strays or free un-desexed animals - Report or surrender animals you discover in cruel breeding environments - Don’t sell or give away undesexed animals - this only spreads the problem. You cannot control the future of that cat or dog once it leaves your hands. - Work on becoming CatWise more information to come! If for any reason you are unable to desex, register, vaccinate and health check your animal, the most loving thing to do is surrender them. Making the right choice now will help reduce problems in the future and give them the chance at another loving home.
