22.01.2022 The Tuncurry Water Splash Park, planned to replace the ageing Tuncurry swimming pool, has moved another step forward after receiving a cash injection earlier this week from the Federal government. The shut-down of the pool, following the end of this season's swimming season, marked a new beginning for the 48-year-old pool, with MidCoast Council planning a massive revamp of the facility and the surrounding area. The swimming pool site was one of two Great Lakes projects to rec...eive a combined $700,000 grant. Earlier this week, Member for Lyne, David Gillespie announced the government would contribute $400,000 towards construction of the $1.5 million splash park, while the Tea Gardens swimming was given $300,000 for the $700,000 stage one upgrade of the facility. Dr Gillespie believed the splash park would see Tuncurry evolve into a state-of-the-art tourism mecca and that every child would want to visit the facility. "Water parks are extremely popular, and this will be a great asset for both the local community and visitors," Dr Gillespie said. Before construction begins council will again consult the community before reporting back to either the October or November monthly ordinary meeting. Water parks are extremely popular, and this will be a great asset for both the local community and visitors. David Gillespie Mayor, David West said there had been strong community support for a children's water park for some time. "This is an opportunity to provide an amazing water park facility to our community," Cr West said. "We are looking forward to working with the community to help shape the plans for the space." Attending the announcement, councillor Troy Fowler said the area would be converted into a vibrant space for the entire MidCoast Council community and its tourists. "It will be an all abilities play space where the focus will be on inclusion," Cr Fowler said. The project was expected to begin in September with further community consultation to gauge ideas for the space, which could include a large bucket dumper, showering arches, water cannons, random ground sprays across the pad and showering features. The space also would include barbecue and picnic facilities while the tired looking and unsuitable amenities block would be upgraded to be an all inclusive facility. Council anticipates the splash park will be open for the 2021-22 swimming season.
21.01.2022 The impact of the coronavirus, COVID-19, means we are living in a very changed Australian landscape. I know it is affecting all of us, and in many different ways. 19.01.2022 Here’s a summary of what the Prime Minister announced tonight following the National Cabinet meeting: Public gatherings are now reduced to 2 people, playgrounds and skateparks are to be closed from tomorrow and people should be shopping for food and other essentials as infrequently as possible. ... The Prime Minister has recommended people over 70, people over 60 with a chronic illness and Indigenous people over 50 should leave the house as little as possible. The Prime Minister has stressed people should only be leaving their homes for shopping for the essentials, work or school if it is not possible for them to do this from home, medical care and exercise. The rules around funerals and weddings remain the same: five people for weddings and ten people for funerals. There will be a moratorium on evictions for private renters for the next 6 months. This is a very difficult time for everyone but these restrictions are being brought in to protect everyone. Please stay safe everyone , and especially keep an eye out for any elderly that may live close to you. #weworkbettertogether

18.01.2022 Another great win for the Wingham Community... Car park upgrade in Wingham’s CBD Improvement works in and around Wingham’s McCullagh Lane car park are due to start this month, including the installation of a new cantilevered shade structure.... MidCoast Council’s road crews will undertake these important improvement works over approximately 6 weeks, weather-permitting, for completion early-March. Along with rehabilitating the car park surface and replacing the existing shadecloth, the project includes resurfacing the road pavements in McCullagh and Maitland Lanes, replacing kerb and gutter, and improvements to roadside drainage. Preliminary works to address drainage will kick-off tomorrow, Wednesday 13 January, requiring the Primrose Street entry to be closed. Detour signage will be in place to direct traffic to use the alternate entry and exit. The upgrade will be welcome news for users of the busy car park, which complements main street parking on Isabella and Bent Streets, explained Rob Scott, MidCoast Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services. As well as revitalising this area which has been in poor condition for some time, the work will ultimately reduce ongoing maintenance costs and deliver on our value-for-money approach. The upgrade coincides with consultation currently being undertaken with the local community around a Wingham CBD beautification masterplan that will see a major transformation of the busy shopping and business precinct roll-out over coming years. Refurbishing the car park now will mitigate the impacts of major CBD works that are currently being planned Rob said. It also follows a series of work undertaken on Wingham’s roads recently including Primrose Street, which will be finalised in coming months, and further works in Farquhar Street. CBD motorists are asked to observe all roadworks signage while the work is conducted, and can expect the car park to be unavailable at times during the construction phase. Disruptions to traffic in and around the area of work may also cause minor delays. 13.01.2022 APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR $15,000 BERT EVANS APPRENTICE SCHOLARSHIPS Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Catherine Cusack has announced that applications are now open for the Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarships and encourages all hard working apprentices to apply. The scholarships support apprentices who are experiencing financial or personal hardship, demonstrate a high aptitude for vocational education and are committed to their on and off the job training.... Ms Cusack said up to 95 scholarships will be awarded to outstanding apprentices in NSW at a time when the State faces challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic. An apprenticeship is a great way to kick-start a career, and apprentices are vital to our State’s growth, but we also understand it’s not always easy to complete a qualification, Ms Cusack said. Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee said apprentices were vital to driving NSW forward during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We want to back our apprentices by giving them a helping hand to complete their training and gain a qualification so they can make a strong contribution in their jobs and in the lives of their families and communities, Mr Lee said. The response to the COVID-19 pandemic has meant many industries are experiencing a pause, so this scholarship could not have come at a better time. The scholarship program is named in honour of the late Bert Evans AO, a passionate advocate of vocational education for more than 30 years. For more information and to lodge an application, visit www.training.nsw.gov.au/bert_evans_scholarships or phone 13 28 11 to contact your local Training Services NSW Office.

09.01.2022 Anthony Albanese - Taking a break from kissing babies, Albo has been sighted serving up snags to some suspiciously fresh and clean firefighters. Regular Pickering Post contributor Paul Zanetti has been doing a little digging and burst the Labor leader’s bubble with the following expose. Paul takes up the story in his own words: I was particularly moved by this comment from Stephen Shields, a NSW firefighter who had returned from fighting the ...Bilpin fire in western Sydney. While the politician (Albanese) was fed and filmed at the local Community Hall, using the fireys as a backdrop, there was no breakfast for the exhausted firefighters who spent the night battling the blazes. But there was Albo, staged as the hero for the cameras ‘feeding weary firefighters’, while the real heroes were told to go down the road to Maccas. That’s something you won’t hear about in your news bulletins. Here’s Stephen’s story. Thank you, Stephen, and all your fellow firefighters for all you do. See more
09.01.2022 UPDATE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER By working together, we are saving lives in Australia. A month ago, new cases of coronavirus were growing at a rate of more than 20 percent a day. For over ten days now, the rate has fallen to less than one percent a day. ... Australia’s actions, including travel bans, quarantine, restrictions on gatherings, social distancing and comprehensive testing and contact tracing, have made a real difference. However, we can’t afford to get complacent. Sadly, across the world, we have seen how quickly coronavirus can spread and how devastating it can be. For example, in the United Kingdom over 18,000 people have died. This is nearly 100 times our death rate, per capita. In countries like Spain, France and Italy and in some states of the USA, the devastation has been even worse. Australia must continue to suppress the virus, while planning our road to recovery. This will include even more comprehensive testing, even more comprehensive contact tracing and local response teams that can ensure outbreaks are contained. Thanks to the efforts of Australians, we are now in position to ease restrictions on elective surgery. We have boosted the capacity of hospitals and secured over 3,000 new ventilators. An additional 60 million masks have been received in the national stockpile, with more than half a billion more on order. We’ve expanded Medicare-subsidised telehealth services, with five million services delivered since mid-March. Australia entered this crisis in a position of economic strength. This has enabled us to deliver the biggest economic lifeline in our history. This week, enrolments have begun for our JobKeeper program, with over 350,000 employers enrolled so far. Payments of up to $50,000 have also been made to around 177,000 small and medium businesses employing 2.1 million Australians, to help improve their cash flow. We see businesses, not the government, at the centre of our economy. Helping them to invest and create jobs will be critical for our recovery. The road ahead will be very tough. However, Australia is in a stronger position to deal with this crisis than almost any other country. We will continue to protect lives and livelihoods, while planning our road to recovery. Tomorrow is ANZAC Day, where we normally gather together. This year our traditions will be interrupted, but we will never forget our history. That’s our promise to everyone who has served and who serves us today. Today, we also think of our police and their families, all around Australia. To those who protect our community, we are forever in your debt. Regards, Scott Morrison Prime Minister
09.01.2022 MidCoast businesses need to Get Ready too Following last month’s campaign to ensure every MidCoast household has a bushfire survival plan, MidCoast Council is now urging local businesses to Get Ready for emergencies too. Being prepared can improve recovery; it can mean the difference between your business re-opening quickly after an event or remaining closed.... Commissioner of Resilience NSW, Shane Fitzsimmons says this year alone has been one of unparalleled emergencies. Communities across NSW were first impacted by drought, bushfire, then storm and flood, now pandemic - and all in quick succession. This has highlighted how important it is to be prepared for all hazards. MidCoast Council Mayor David West says that MidCoast businesses have experienced all of these disruptions, and preparing for disruption is simply good business. The good news is that it’s never been easier. Get Ready Business has been specially designed to help NSW business owners prepare for emergencies and disasters in five simple steps just like the household bushfire survival plans, said the Mayor. MidCoast businesses can prepare for emergencies and disasters by downloading the free Get Ready Business toolkit from Resilience NSW. The toolkit helps a business prepare for emergency, and may make all the difference in recovering quickly even if power, telecommunications and transport routes are cut. Resilience NSW has also prepared a recovery guide for business a handy guide to help get business up and running after disasters. With many local tourism businesses offering hospitality and accommodation services, having an emergency plan is a responsibility to ensure the safety of your guests during an emergency. Visit midcoast.nsw.gov.au/getready and check the Get Ready business tab to access all of these resources and ensure your business and your employees Get Ready for emergencies. Our emergency service organisations do an incredible job keeping us safe, but they can only do so much. Being aware and prepared is everyone’s responsibility. If you are recovering from last year’s bushfires, please visit the link above or call 7955 7777. If reminders of the bushfires are causing issues for you, please call the Mental Healthline on 1800 011 511.

06.01.2022 ON THE BALL NSW STATE GOVERNMENT FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR EVENTS IN MYALL LAKES Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead is inviting event organisers, associations, councils and community groups across Myall Lakes to share in the targeted events program throughout 2020.... Events across the area can now apply for $1 million worth of grants to deliver events that attract visitors and provide an economic boost to local businesses. The NSW Nationals in Government have opened the Regional Event Fund as part of the $10 million Tourism Recovery package through two streams: the Flagship Event Fund and a new Micro Event Fund. Events are really important for Myall Lakes because they give people from outside Mid-Coast Area the opportunity to visit, stay ‘locally’ and spend ‘locally’, Mr. Bromhead said. On top of this, events stimulate our local economy through engaging local businesses such as food and beverage and infrastructure suppliers, tradespeople and staff, who all contribute to the delivery of a successful event. The regional event funding programs will give organisers a chance to put forward sporting, arts, cultural and lifestyle events that bring an economic and social boost to Myall Lakes. The two funding streams now open will offer: Flagship Event Fund grants of $20,000 to support event marketing activities to attract visitors from outside their immediate regions and drive tourism. Micro Event Fund one-off grants of $10,000 to community-based events in bushfire or drought-affected areas with total operating budgets of $75,000 or less that have the capacity to bring together local communities, attract visitation and stimulate local economies. To be eligible events must be delivered between 1 May and 31 December 2020. Events in bushfire-affected areas that will be held in March and April across Easter and the school holiday period may be eligible for Federal Government grants via Austrade. Event owners can seek guidance from Austrade, Destination NSW, Destination Networks and local councils about relevant grant applications.
06.01.2022 Boost for Crowdy Head fishing facility A bank of six fish cleaning tables will be installed at the Crowdy Head boat harbour, to bring the facility up to the same level as other regional boating facilities in the MidCoast The project is funded by the Department of Primary Industries Recreational Fishing Trust, and will be delivered by MidCoast Council.... Council’s Manager of Community Spaces and Trades, Dan Aldridge, explained the $20,000 funding allocation would see the new facilities located in the vicinity of the old wharf near the Crowdy Head Fish Co-op, opposite the boat ramp. Mr Aldridge said the project was being undertaken as a result of community feedback that fish cleaning tables would be valued in the location and to ensure the Crowdy Head regional boat ramp had the same facilities as other regional boat ramps in the local government area. The Crowdy Head boat harbour is a popular location for both recreational and commercial fishers, to date fishers have had to pack up their catch and drive back to Harrington to access a fish cleaning table, which is not an ideal situation. There is an expectation amongst the community that when they fish at a regional boat ramp, standard facilities such as fish cleaning tables are available. We are pleased that through the funding from the Recreational Fishing Trust we are now able to offer those fishing from Crowdy Head the same level of service fishers receives at our other regional boat harbours, such as Forster and Tea Gardens, Mr Aldridge said. Transport for NSW Martime has advised MidCoast Council the location supports their long term plan to convert the current jetty into a shorter platform and as such the location for the fish tables is supported. Council also worked with the Local Aboriginal Land Council on the location. In addressing concerns raised that the fish cleaning tables would attract sharks, creating a danger to swimmers, he pointed out that offal was not an issue at any fish cleaning tables in operation across the MidCoast. Pelicans very quickly take care of an offal as part of the natural food cycle. People should also remember the boat harbour is an area for recreational and commercial fishers and is not a swimming area. Anyone intending to swim in that area should do so at the nearby beaches. Mr Aldridge said parking had been assessed and was not an issue either, given the large car park that exists opposite the boat harbour with ample room for parking of vehicles and boats. Work on the installation of the tables is expected to take place over the next few months, with ramp users and locals notified through signage at the site when work is due to start.
02.01.2022 The State and Federal Governments are picking up the bill for the bushfire clean-up. Laing O’Rourke has been given the contract and will work with local contractors to get the job done.
02.01.2022 Today the Berejiklian Government has announced a $395 million economic stimulus package to safeguard council jobs, and local services and infrastructure in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Port Stephens Council recently called on the Government to provide assistance to ensure jobs are secure, and that vital infrastructure programs and essential services continue. Highlights of today’s announcement include:... Up to $112.5 million from the NSW Government’s ‘Jobs for NSW’ Fund to support a Council Job Retention Allowance of $1,500 per fortnight per employee to limit job losses in the NSW local government sector. The allowance will be paid for up to three months to qualifying staff. $32.8 million to help councils meet increases in the 2020/21 Emergency Services Levy.
02.01.2022 Work to begin on northern section of The Lakes Way Road reconstruction works for a 780m stretch of The Lakes Way at Rainbow Flat will begin on 18 June. The section being targeted is between Chelmsbrook Drive and Blackhead Road, this will take approximately 12 shifts over three weeks to complete, weather permitting.... Works will include removing the existing surface layer that will be replaced by two layers of asphalt, followed by the line marking. The surface of this section of The Lakes Way has significantly deteriorated and given it’s one of our busiest travel routes, this work will be welcome news to many MidCoast commuters, said Rhett Pattison, MidCoast Council’s Manager of Projects and Engineering. We’re also pleased to be upgrading an additional 300m of this section of The Lakes Way in the next financial year - which is currently in the design phase - resulting in just over a kilometre of much needed resurfacing of this main road. Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead said The Lakes Way project was being funded 50:50 between the MidCoast Council and the NSW Government as part of the $100 million Road Upgrade Package for the Mid North Coast. It’s great to see the NSW Government continue to invest in vital infrastructure projects that make a real difference to local communities, Mr Bromhead said. These works will take place through the night with traffic control in place. The Lakes Way will be open to north bound through traffic only, during work times from 6pm to 6am, however will be re-opened to both directions outside of these times. Southbound traffic will be detoured via the Pacific Highway and Failford Road. Local residents between Chelmsbrook Drive and Blackhead Road will be directed through the work site under traffic control when required. Motorists are asked to observe all roadworks signage, traffic signals, reduced speed limits, and directions from road crews, and to travel with caution through the area. For more information and to stay updated on this project once it commences, or to search for roadworks taking place near you, visit www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/roads This project is part of MidCoast Council’s commitment to improving infrastructure across the region.
