24.01.2022 Some beautifully coloured Southern Pygmy Perch males from the Coppabella Creek NSW that are being used in a captive breeding program to stock the Denilliquin Lagoon. Females starting to show signs of the on coming breeding season.

24.01.2022 Not all fish related but pics of our full dams and a small area of our creek. Also for any plant guru's some what I assume are natives flowers and plants along our creek. The recovery after a two year drought when all of our dams were dry and our creek hadn't run for nearly three years. Mother nature sure is amazing!

22.01.2022 These Southern Pygmy Perch fry are approx 5 weeks old first fry were sampled 3rd September. These are from three different tanks which include the Avocas, McIvor and Jews Harp populations. They range from 7mm - 15mm. They are starting to loose condition so we will move them into 350 litre aquariums and get them onto high protein commercial food until release.

22.01.2022 So at the beginning of last season I made the decision to stop breeding Rhads as I am basically a one man band (with assistance from Mr Maintenance) and I had too many irons in the fire! When I sent them all to another breeder I missed three Teewah and thought they were three males. Put them into an outside tub to live out their lives. Thought I had better give it a bit of maintenance and this is what I found - I guess one of them was a girl

21.01.2022 Just spent 2 daystraveling over 1,000kms to deliver nearly two thousand captive bred Southern Pygmy Perch for release in 10 locations. Pics of some of the fantastic habitat my 'babies ' will now call home! Fantastic example of what a cooperative approach can achieve when you put a group of passionate people together

20.01.2022 Our latest paper shows that large-scale construction of dams and weirs in the MDB (Australia) has contributed to the isolation and local extinctions of southern... pygmy perch populations. More generally, this study also shows that the impact of very recent fragmentation on aquatic species is often underestimated, indicating that pro-active conservation measures to reconnect many riverine populations are urgently needed! The paper is open access via this link: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/eva.13128 See more

19.01.2022 A couple of the Cannibal Creek 'big' boys heading into spawning tanks. Note ruler in background showing one at a bit over 8cm and the other closer to 10cm! These Southern Pygmy Perch would be close to four years old.

18.01.2022 Western Pygmy Perch babies enjoying their brine shrimp lunch.

18.01.2022 Great to see some Pygmy Perch doing so well.

18.01.2022 Who can guess what these fry are? Video isn't as clear once I posted, a clue you might notice the colour of their eyes!

18.01.2022 Sorry for my odd post just now, it was about more Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeons being found, for some reason the original post seems to have disappeared and then dropped off my shared one - ah the joys of social media!

17.01.2022 It is that time of the year where we bring indoors all of the Pygmy Perch. These are the first of 10 ponds to be done. 'Cannibal Creek' brood stock. This is done to condition the brood stock ready for spring spawning and also to control spawning to a certain degree, ensuring that we have green water tanks ready and seeded with daphnia prior to the fry arriving - well that's the plan anyway!

16.01.2022 Our soon to be 'warm room' for live food production for hatchery.

16.01.2022 Neat paper published yesterday on one of Australia's rarest and smallest fishes, the Little Pygmy Perch from the SW of Western Australia. Only lives in a few km of stream.

15.01.2022 The 'not so fun side ' of fish breeding. While the sun is shining made a start on the 200 plus meters of spawning media that needs to be washed and sanitised prior to the breeding season kicking off.

11.01.2022 Group 1 of our Honey Blue Eye brood stock for this coming season. We always keep three groups as an insurance policy! Two groups remain outside in 3,000 litre tanks and this group are the lucky ones to spend winter in the shed :) Their colours are pretty plain at the moment but the boys will look incredible once breeding starts.

11.01.2022 Time to refresh the vinegar eel culture, set up artemia hatcher and rotifer culture will start next week ready for end of September spawning I hope

11.01.2022 Mother nature is amazing! This dam was dry for about 8 months until we received over 4 inches in 24 hours. Just put our local Flindersi Pygmy Perch back in after 12 months in tanks in hatchery. I think they will be very happy

10.01.2022 Sorting time for the Western pygmy perch. These are from last season and selecting the biggest, brightest boys to add to our broodstock for this season.

09.01.2022 Setting up another bank of tanks with my ever enthusiastic tradie

08.01.2022 We all need to do our bit to protect our natives and their habitat - please notify Fisheries if you find these invasive species, and never release unwanted aquarium fish into our waterways, humanly euthanise with clove oil or ask your local aquarium shop for advice.

08.01.2022 No need for tank top ups this week! After more than 2 inches I think even managed to do a partial water change in most of these tanks

08.01.2022 Just another example of our stunning small bodied natives!

07.01.2022 With our drying climate these sort of projects will become more and more essential as refuges for our small bodied natives. Deniliquin in NSW have done a similar thing and are currently stocking it with some of our endangered and at risk natives. If we are going to save our small native fish we need to start looking and thinking outside the box!

07.01.2022 The cycle of life begins again at Middle Creek with the first fry for the season - Avoca Southern Pygmy Perch.

06.01.2022 We are extremely privileged to be named as one of two hatcheries along with Aquasave that will have the opportunity to assist with the conservation of these fantastic little fish by undertaking a captive breeding program.

06.01.2022 Mm mm so this is why we completely empty our ponds each winter - I was sure I had trapped all of the Murray River Rainbows but this was what was actually in there when we drained it today

06.01.2022 Murray River Rainbows, three year old brood stock, size difference from two days worth of eggs (all collected over two days) then sorted and ready to go to new owner.

05.01.2022 A feeding frenzy involving 500 Southern Pygmy Perch juveniles. They still get live feeds twice weekly until release.

05.01.2022 A program to learn more about native river blackfish is using some innovative technology, thanks to your fishing licence fees. Researchers from Deakin Universit...y are hoping to monitor the spawning and recruitment of river blackfish in the Gellibrand River, using underwater cameras to learn more. As you can see, one or two fish have proven keen to snap a selfie! In coming months as the breeding season approaches they’ll be back at work, adding some processing power to the underwater cameras to collect more images. Last season they were assisted by local blackfish breeder Stephen Mueller in helping to configure the systems and test the underwater capability of the cameras. #fishinglicencefeesatwork #nativefish

03.01.2022 Japanese Medakas. A new colour strain I have been working on for four years, I think I will call them Royal Orange! I know they are not native but these little guys provide me with the cash flow to follow my passion for our fantastic small natives

03.01.2022 Artemia aka brine shrimp. This is our 2nd live food for all our native fry. First food is derived from green water culture, then daphnia and copepods are last live food before they are weaned onto artificial feeds.

02.01.2022 We had the most wonderful news yesterday - still can't get the smile off my face! Below are pictures of some of the Southern Pygmy Perch that were released at three sites initially at Bendigo, these guys are now 12 months old and as you can see from the pictures are in beautiful condition and the female is ready to spawn, as a passionate breeder of small bodied natives, I can not explain the joy I get from seeing our captive bred 'babies' make it in the real world and do it so amazingly :) What a massive achievement for a wonderful collaboration of people - NCCMA, Greater City of Bendigo, ANGFA & NFA.

01.01.2022 Time to refresh the vinegar eel culture, set up artemia hatcher and rotifer culture will start next week ready for end of September spawning I hope
