24.01.2022 Tetanus Again! Last weekend had to put to sleep a mare with tetanus (see video). Uncertain vaccination history and a recent foot abscess treated by farrier wit...h no tetanus vaccine or antitoxin. Foot abscesses, infected hoof cracks and stone bruises are a great way to get tetanus and farriers that treat them either don't know this or forget to tell the owner to speak to their vet about tetanus prevention. Please pass this information onto your farrier! Tetanus spores are abundant in horse faeces and therefore, any soil where horses live. Soil and mud contaminates foot wounds and abscesses. The spores need an environment with little or no oxygen - like a crack or abscess under a horse's hoof wall or sole - and hence perfect conditions to get the tetanus bacteria to grow and produce the toxin. Easily preventable disease and terrible death! I will post again the tetanus post I put up a few years ago with information about the disease and vaccination etc. Keep your horses up to date!
