Its been such a long time since we’ve all be able to catch up at the club for a bowl, a chat and a beer. 22.01.2022 Yesterday the Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced, registered and licensed clubs, pubs, cinemas, casinos, entertainment venues nightclubs, gyms, and restaurants will close from 12 midnight today to try and combat the further spread of coronavirus. The Stage 3 operating restriction will apply for 6 weeks through to 19th August. This means the Middle Park Bowls Club will be closed from close of business today, Wednesday 8th of July.... At this stage the club will be completely closed to patrons, including the bar and bowling greens. Obviously this is a frustrating time with the club only reopening a couple of weeks ago but we all need to do the right thing so we can safely reopen in 6 weeks. (Hopefully less). On behalf of the club I'd like to wish you all well for the coming lock down period. Look after yourselves and we'll be back bigger and better than ever when the storm passes.

17.01.2022 Some heavy lifting at the club today with installation of the steel works for the new pergola structure at the front of the former Ladies rooms. An exciting development that will enhance the amenity of what has become a popular function space.

17.01.2022 Due to government directives, Middle Park Bowling Club will closed to all patrons until further notice (this includes the greens, and the club house). We apologies for any inconvenience and we hope to see you all sooner rather than later.

16.01.2022 CHAIRMANS UPDATE - COUNCIL ELECTION EDITION Good evening Parkas! Following on from my Chairman’s Update last weekend I indicated that I had written to the Lake Ward candidates contesting the upcoming CoPP council elections with a funding proposal seeking support for our redevelopment project and would send out a further update this weekend indicating the responses we’ve had. I’m pleased to say that we received significant positive responses from the candidates and met with s...Continue reading

14.01.2022 CLUB REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT Wonderful news - the City of Port Phillip has selected Middle Park Bowling Club to be a project of choice that they have now submitted to the Victorian Government for grant funding under the Community Sport and Infrastructure programme. The council has also nominated Powerhouse Rugby Club and the Graham Street Informal Recreational Precinct project as Sport and Recreational projects for funding within the City of Port Phillip. We’ve been working h...ard over recent years to transform the club into a significant and valuable community asset. Far from being a place that once was dedicated to a few playing lawn bowls, Middle Park Bowling Club is now a hub for residents and a recreational facility that attracts socialisation and engagement amongst community members far beyond the sporting activities lawn bowls provides, whilst always recognising at our core we’re a club dedicated to promoting lawn bowls as healthy activity available to a wide demographic of our local community. The club also shares the facility with the Victorian Race Walkers Club and hosts many community groups for a diverse range of usages. The redeveloped facility has been designed with universal design principles to offer enhanced amenities for the broader community including the disabled and in particular better facilities for women including change rooms, toilets and showers to encourage female participation in our sport whilst also restoring many of the original heritage design features of the building that have been lost over the years. With our master plan now in place and having received planning approval from the City of Port Phillip we’re ready to go with our redevelopment project that will provide significant employment opportunities for workers in the post COVID-19 environment whilst delivering a facility that will benefit the community for many future years. We sincerely thank the City of Port Phillip for their support in our nomination and now wait in anticipation for approval of funding from the Victorian State Government announcements expected to be made mid July. We also thank Secretary David Spokes for his tireless work in advancing this project and getting us to this point with our application and Warren McVean from Studio 35 Architecture for his help with the redevelopment design. #CityofPortPhillip #BowlsVic #ParksVictoria

12.01.2022 CLUB REOPENING Welcome news yesterday with the easing of restrictions meanng that Middle Park Bowling Club will be reopening tomorrow afternoon. At this stage its anticipated that we’ll be open Tuesdays to Thursdays 2.00pm to 6.00pm and then Fridays to Sundays 2.00pm to 8.00pm. We’ll monitor the demand and adjust the hours accordingly over the coming weeks as needed. As of tomorrow we’re allowed to have 10 patrons in the bar area and 50 outside under the hospitality provis...ions. On November 8 this will increase to 70 outside. Whilst the guidelines released yesterday still specify only 10 patrons indoor per space from this date, we’re hopeful that this will be reviewed and we’ll be allowed to have increased numbers in the clubhouse. As numbers are limited please phone the club or email [email protected] to make bookings for tables and rinks. There are restrictions around social distancing that will need to be observed indoors and outdoors most of us will be aware of these but staff will direct all to follow the guidelines in line with our Covid Safe Plan. Also please be mindful of the works that are currently being undertaken at the club and follow staff's directions so we can operate safely around these works. In particular, at this stage no children will be permitted beyond the clubhouse into the rear area of the grounds. As to community sport, we’re allowed to play bowls competition outdoors at all age levels. No limits on total number of participants has been specified just that the number of players must be the minimum appropriate for the game to be played. So if it’s a game of 4’s that should mean 8 players can be on a rink. We’re awaiting advise from Bowls Victoria as to the guidelines that they negotiate for our sport with the government to get some clarity around this particularly as applies to barefoot bowls. Hopefully something will be forthcoming this afternoon. Bowls Victoria are also anticipating that there will be a return of Saturday Pennant competition on November 28. We certainly look forward to reopening the club tomorrow and catching up after the long break!

11.01.2022 Some clarity around the opening provisions has just come to light after BV discussions with State Government today. It seems that there is a limitation of 2 groups of a maximum of 20 players (10 per group) allowed at bowling clubs as long as a separation of 100 meters can be maintained between groups. It's not clear as to what constitutes as group - whether this is a group on a rink or say a green or the facility as a whole. At this stage it does seem that there is suffici...ent doubt around the guidelines to not reopen the greens for play so the club will not be reopening tomorrow or in the immediate days following at this point. Hopefully there is some further news around the supposed reopening of community sporting facilities over the coming days. In any case we're hopeful that in a weeks time, or a maximum of two we'll be able to open up to to some 90 with bar facilities as well. 07.01.2022 Loving Greenkeeper Adrian Marston’s optimism. Greens looking fantastic - lines marked and ready to go! Let’s hope we get some relaxation of the exercise rules Sunday so we can get back down to the club for a long awaited roll.....

07.01.2022 More progress at the club on the works package with the concrete completed for the new pegola function space outside the former Ladies rooms. This is shaping up to be an amazing area that combined with the internal room and adjacent to the back green should be able to accommodate functions for circa 150 guests. We’re looking at the roof structure being installed next week and works now being concluded within 2 weeks. Pathways lead to the new park entrance spilling out onto the children’s playground area with views over the park to the city. Also brilliant that the new Shadowspec shade umbrellas on the front green installed when COVID hit in March are now finally getting a run with visitors enjoying the improved amenities Friday evening.

04.01.2022 We've got the cheapest drinks and the best beer garden in Melbourne! So what are you waiting for...?

04.01.2022 Fantastic! New Shadowspec shade structures now installed on the front bank of the Plumb Green and looking brilliant. Providing 126sq metres of coverage in total they’re gunna be a great asset to the club for both the winter and summer months. Thanks to Brent Backhouse for securing the grant funding and Jason Black, Steven Reichelt, Mark Rattray-Wood and Merv Ford for getting all of these installed today.

02.01.2022 Please see below Middle Park's statement in regards to COVID-19

02.01.2022 Wow! The works are now really progressing at the club, providing us with a feel of what we're looking at once completed. A massive paved undercover outdoor function area adjoining the former ladies rooms complete with lighting and fans under the new pegola structure. Paths leading to the new alternative entrance from the park with a further grassed space for guests to occupy in an area formally occupied by water tanks and rubbish bins. This will now be a wonderful outdoor function space that spills out onto the park with north facing views over the park and the city skyline. All very exciting stuff. A few more weeks will see this all ready to go!

01.01.2022 The Board of Management is pleased to announce the decision to reopen the club’s greens for play next Thursday May 21. At this stage the club will be open Thursday to Sunday between the hours of 12.00pm to 4.00pm for bowling activities only the clubhouse and bar will remain closed. Access will be limited at this stage to full members only. There are extensive restrictions still in place around permitted activities and the club will be following guidelines and implementing... practices in line with these guidelines. These include but are not limited to: Adherence to social distancing . A maximum of 10 players per green and 4 players per rink with spacing between rinks played . Appropriate sanitising facilities and practices . Limitations on co handling of equipment such as jacks and other players bowls . Visitors and spectators will not be permitted There will be club staff supervising activities and members must adhere to the directions given by staff at all times. There are extensive fines and sanctions prescribed under the law for breaches of the restrictions for both the club and individuals so it is important that the rules are followed. We suggest that those wishing to play phone to book a rink prior to the day they wish to play or call on the day to check if rinks are available as the club will only be accommodating a total of 20 players at this stage. We will not be allowing walk ins as this may breach the restriction of the permitted number that are on the premises at any given time. If you are unwell or have been in recent contact with persons with Covid-19 please do not attend the club. Its important that were mindful of the health of our fellow members and staff particularly in light of the age demographic of the club’s members. We’re certainly however pleased that we’re going to be able to roll down some bowls finally and catch up with fellow members after this long break! And hopefully soon be able to welcome further easing of restrictions enabling increased activities at the club. Steven Reichelt Chairman Middle Park Bowls Club
