25.01.2022 I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and I hope you have the opportunity over the next couple of weeks to relax, reflect and recharge. I also want to say a huge thank you for your support and to my clients, for the opportunity to work with you, over the last 12 months. To end this year, I wanted to share with you a story which I think reflects the positive side of 2020........ In March, when COVID hit, most of my work (speaking gigs and corporate workshops) was cancelled or postponed. A gorgeous friend of mine, a former colleague at Shine Lawyers, Leanne, reached out and called me. She said that she had been thinking of me and my business and wanted to know whether I needed any work. I was blown away by her generosity and accepted her invitation. I worked in Leanne’s team for a few months and was so grateful for the opportunity. I have heard so many stories like mine from friends and colleagues. Stories of people reaching out and helping others, and building stronger connections this year. I love this! So, for you, I hope that through all the uncertainty and upheaval of 2020, you've had moments of gratitude, happiness and connection. I hope that you've learned more about yourself, and who you are, and the magic that you bring to others. Wishing you a wonderful Christmas with your family and friends. See you in 2021! 25.01.2022 How do you feel when someone gives you positive feedback? I think it makes most of us smile, feel good inside and motivates us to do more of the same. So, how can we give more effective positive feedback?... 1. Make it SPECIFIC. Instead of saying "Great presentation today, provide details of what you valued and what you want to see more of. 2. Make it MEANINGFUL. Focus on meaningful behaviour, not just trivial things. Give feedback on behaviours that are aligned to company values and culture, client deliverables and future vision. 3. Make it TIMELY. Don't hold back feedback for the next one-to-one or end of year review. Give the feedback in the moment. If you take the time to look for and acknowledge positive behaviour in your team, you’ll motivate, engage and connect with your people. You’ll also be reinforcing the desired team culture. Give the kind of feedback that will make your people smile and feel chuffed about their work and contribution. Think about each member of your team: * When was the last time you gave them specific, positive feedback? * What are they currently doing well; how are they making a meaningful contribution? Take the time this week, to give them this feedback and see the difference it makes! Champagne and Sunshine, Midja x ...................................... Midja creates confident leaders. 24.01.2022 Hanging out at the inaugural Future Females event last night with these amazing leaders. Speakers Tania Meli and @larissa.c.rose shared their personal stories of leadership and throwing the rope over to help other women step up in their careers. My key takeaways: - sometimes all I can do as a leader is give you who i am - the power of symbolism to remind you of your purpose ... - lead with conviction and intentionality always #leadership #femaleleaders #leaders #womeninleadership #networking #gcbusiness #goldcoast See more

24.01.2022 Who else gets super excited now when heading into the office? Today was a leadership workshop for a client down on Eagle St in Brisbane. We talked a lot about leadership presence and what it takes to influence a room full of people. Is it a shift in mindset first that changes behaviour? Or can you fake it until you make it? I work with my clients on both - their thinking and their behaviours. The inside and the outside! #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #leaders #presence #confidence

23.01.2022 Thats a lot of Midja! Awesome day today presenting virtually as part of the Methodist Ladies College Careers Innovators Program. I shared with the students how they can start their careers with unshakeable confidence and develop a positive mindset to lead with authenticity and courage. Great questions asked by the young women on whether they can fake it until they make it, what it means to be a feminist right now and why I do the work that I do in the leadership space. 22.01.2022 Starting the day with coffee and a catch up with the GC Professionals group. Great to see you there Clare! Thanks for organising David.

21.01.2022 Great day presenting virtually at the National HR Summit Australia. How do you create a team people want to play with? Thats the question I answered today. Its all about connecting people with a vivid vision, creating culture and a sense of belonging and empowering people to use their magic to innovate and find solutions. Some great questions from the audience too! #leadership #hr #leaders #leadershipdevelopment #keynotespeaker #conference #teambuilding

21.01.2022 We had a new Zumba instructor at the gym this week and I found the class tough work. You see, she was standing out the front, doing the moves, but she didnt SAY anything. Normally the instructor yells out things to the class like, "Okay, so to the left for two, now to the right and these verbal instructions make it so much easier to follow the steps. So, what happens in a situation like this when a leader doesnt give adequate instructions? ...Continue reading

21.01.2022 In my happy place today with my flipchart and a group of awesome women kicking it in their businesses. We talked about the importance of understanding and defining both your personal and business values. When we move our values from our unconscious to our conscious mind, we understand what motivates us and drives our behaviours. We can then clearly articulate to our people what we expect from them. Values are the foundation of every business and when we understand them and communicate them clearly, we get to work with our ideal team members and our ideal clients. Sounds perfect. #values #leadership #womeninbusiness #womeninleadership #confidence #workshop #mentor

19.01.2022 Business by the beach at a favourite bar. Why not? I always ask my mentoring clients where they would like to meet. Sometimes its the office but often its their favourite coffee shop, bar or restaurant. I love nothing better than sitting down getting to know a client over a delicious meal and a bottle of wine or champagne. They often recommend to me their favourite item on the menu and they know the staff by name. How awesome! Its THEIR space; a place where they feel c...omfortable to be themselves and talk to me about whats really going on. #mentor #mentoringprogram #leadership #influence #trust #leaders #leadershipexpert #confidence #confidentleaders

18.01.2022 Imposter syndrome can hold you back as a leader. The highly talented and famous American author and poet Maya Angelou once said: "I have written eleven books, but each time I think uh oh, they are going to find me out now. Ive run a game on everyone and theyre going to find me out." It just goes to show that anyone regardless of their talent and experience, can suffer from imposter syndrome at one time or another. ... Here are some signs that you might be suffering from it: You have an overwhelming feeling that youre a fraud and not good enough. You fear failure and would rather avoid trying something than fail at it. You have difficulty accepting praise and you dont believe you deserve the credit. You undersell yourself in conversations with others. You attribute your success to external factors such as luck and circumstances. You consider your peers to be more naturally skilled than you. You dont apply for promotions or jobs that you consider a stretch. Do any of these resonate with you? If they do, its time to take action and do something about it: 1. Change your self-talk: Keep positive useful beliefs front of mind. 2. Stop the comparisons: Stop idolising people and start humanising them. 3. Accept the compliment: Celebrate what others see in you. 4. Let go of perfection : You are perfectly imperfect. 5. Find your tribe: Create a supportive environment in which you have the space to flourish as a leader. Dont let feeling like an imposter hold you back from stepping out of your comfort zone and amplifying your influence. Its time for you to be seen, stand tall and achieve your goals! 17.01.2022 For a few weeks now Ive been working with a brand agency in Brisbane. Theyve interviewed me, looked at my website, books, social media and videos. Last week Sylvie, the director, said to me, Ok, simple, what you do is Create Confident Leaders, thats your lane, right?" And I was like, "Perfect, yes, thats exactly what I do." You see its taken me a little while in business to be able to succinctly explain what it is that I do. Its taken working with different clients, do...ing different work and being asked to speak on a whole range of topics, to finally get really clear on my brand promise. So, I want to ask you the same thing. As a leader, whats the promise you give to the people youre leading? Whats your key message? What lane are you in? Its a bit like when you go to the swimming pool to do laps. For me, I spent a lot of time in my 20s at the Valley Pool in Brisbane. Why? Well, because I was falling in love with a guy who was a swimmer. He would ask me "do you want to train in the morning?" And Id reply, "Sure thing. Of course. Id love to get up at 4:30am every morning before going to work." The things we do for love! Wed get to the pool every morning and, of course, I would have to pick a lane. Pick a lane, dive in, head down and work hard to get to the end. Its exactly the same in leadership. You can try and be everything to everyone. You can try and be great at everything, but as a leader, you have to be known for something. Theres got to be something that youre extraordinary at; something youre known for and that sets you apart. In leadership, you have to pick your lane. Why is it that people would want to follow you and not the leader in the next team? Why would someone want to stick with your organisation and not quit and work for another company? Whats your magic that you bring to the leadership table? What do you stand for as a leader? Its your job to discover your leadership lane and then confidently dive in, put your head down and swim! Champagne and Sunshine, Midja x ............................ Midja creates confident leaders. 17.01.2022 Leadership does not come from a title on a business card. Sometimes people will say to me, Enjoyed the presentation Midja but Im not sure its relevant because Im not a leader. Maybe you have said this, or at least thought it to yourself but let me ask you this:...Continue reading

16.01.2022 Its not their job to be interested. Its your job to be interesting. I heard these words last year from speaker and former TV reality producer, Maz Farrelly, and they really stuck with me. As a leader, are you interesting?... And how can you become an interesting leader in your organisation? To become interesting, you have to be prepared to show your true self to your people; to share your personal stories and be vulnerable. I know that for some leaders this can be absolutely terrifying because they just want to put their suit on, come into the office, keep their head down, do the work and share very little of themselves. But you know what? If I dont know who you are, if youre not interesting, then why would I want to follow you? Why would I want to listen to you, and to stick around in this team? o If all I know about you is whats written on your business card, that youre for example The Queensland General Manager for Logistics.. thats not very interesting. o If you come in to make a presentation and you use some firm-branded PowerPoint with a whole lot of numbers in it thats not very interesting. o If when you communicate, you just read from a script that HR has given to you.. thats not very interesting. In leadership, you have to bring your own personality into your role and make it real, genuine and authentic. You have to build a leadership brand that really connects with your people. Youve got to understand your personal values, mission statement, legacy and magic, and share all of that with your team. Its about being a powerful storyteller and communicator, and being able to draw people into your key messages and your vision. If you can do that, then youll gain peoples commitment, their trust and respect. Youll build a strong connection with them and create a sense of belonging. People are quite simply just going to want to follow you. Your people will step up and do their very best work for you. As a leader, its your job to be interesting! 15.01.2022 Do you feel valued? Do you have the opportunity to do your very best work? Is your magic appreciated? This week, I experienced a situation that left me doubting myself and what I have to offer. Now, before you break out the violins and I start playing the victim, I admit that I contributed to the situation. When you’re feeling underappreciated, your initial reaction can be to blame others and say fork you (totally understandable!) but it’s really the time to create some spa...ce and hold up the mirror. Maybe you’ve been undervaluing yourself and not feeling self-confident. Maybe you’ve been allowing others to treat you in a particular way. I remember a client of mine a few years ago, who felt like she wasn’t valued and was invisible in her organisation. I said to her that it seemed like she was in a Harry Potter movie with the dementors sucking the life right out of her. We worked together and she found a position in a new company and she’s now souring. So, when you’re feeling like this, what can you do? Firstly, look within and do the work on your leadership identity and brand. Then if nothing changes; if others’ perceptions aren’t shifting, then maybe it’s time to remove yourself from the situation. Maybe this just isn’t the client or team or organisation for you and that’s OK. You have way too much to give, to let it go to waste. If the person standing in front of you, can’t see your magic, don’t worry, someone else will. Champagne and Sunshine, Midja ................................... Midja creates confident leaders. 15.01.2022 The people you lead care about the person standing in front of them. There is no room to hide as a leader. It is all about YOU; not in an egotistical way, not for personal gain or to become a rock star. But as a leader, you have to BELIEVE in something passionately, you have to want to CREATE CHANGE and to do that, you need your people to follow you. And people wont follow you unless they feel connected to you. They need to understand you. To be a leader worth following, you must be willing to show the real you and be vulnerable. The most POWERFUL thing you can do in leadership is TO BE YOURSELF. #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #leaders #confidence #confidentleaders #authenticity #courage #beyou #power

13.01.2022 (**Warning.....this video contains very ordinary singing and dance moves.**) I love the song but surely, not EVERYONE was kung fu fighting! When I work with leaders in organisations, I often hear them speak in absolute terms. They say things like:... "NO ONE in my team is showing initiative." "Im NEVER valued in my role for what I do." "My team ALWAYS relies on me to come up with the solution." If you speak in absolutes; if this is the way you actually think, youll look for evidence every single day in your leadership role to make those absolute statements come true. We all like to be RIGHT. These statements help us to solidify our assumptions. Its very much an all or nothing approach. For example, if you believe that no one in your team is showing initiative, if one of your team members, Ben, in a meeting comes up with a great new idea, youll dismiss it. You wont even notice it. It will be forgotten. What you need to do as a leader, when youre thinking this way, is to sit back and challenge yourself. In this example you can ask yourself: Can I think of a time in the last week or even in the last month when someone showed initiative in the team?" And suddenly you think, "You know what? Sue, last week, she rang that client and sorted out their problem without even being asked. And I remember Bernadette, last month worked on that stakeholder project and came up with that amazing idea to add value." When you do this, you suddenly start to see a different picture and you can actually change the script in your head. Once you think differently, youll start acting differently. Youll create positivity in your team and this positivity will grow. Its contagious. Your thoughts and beliefs are so important as a leader. They dictate your actions and ultimately the results you achieve. Be conscious of them and be wary of any absolutes youre carrying around with you. Just remember, it was a great song, but not EVERYONE was kung fu fighting! Champagne and Sunshine, Midja x ......................................................... Midja creates confident leaders. 11.01.2022 Do you want to be liked? Liked by everyone? For me, ‘BEING LIKED’ was always important in my professional roles. It’s also important to many of the leaders who I speak with every day. They want to keep the peace in their teams. They’re self-confessed people pleasers. Now, I believe that likability is an important trait as a leader but if taken too far; if it’s your driving motivator, then it comes at a cost.... While you’re busy convincing people to like you, you start to lose yourself and your sense of identity. Your self-confidence disappears and self-doubt creeps in. You forget who you really are and what you stand for. You bend and sway in the breeze, trying to appease everyone. You lose your magic and your authenticity. I recently watched the latest season of The Crown on Netflix and I was reminded by Margaret Thatcher of the famous poem by Charles Mackay: You have no enemies, you say? Alas! my friend, the boast is poor; He who has mingled in the fray Of duty, that the brave endure, Must have made foes! If you have none, Small is the work that you have done. You've hit no traitor on the hip, You've dashed no cup from perjured lip, You've never turned the wrong to right, You've been a coward in the fight. Love this! Now, maybe you don’t enemies as a leader but I think you do want people who don’t like you. You can’t be everything to everyone. You’re not the leader for everyone. You’re the right leader for YOUR people and your people are those who align with your values and share your future vision. These people will connect with you, like you and do their very best work for you. I now feel quite proud when someone doesn’t like me. It means that I’m being authentic and showing my true self. Of course, not everyone is going to like me or is going to want to work with me and that’s absolutely ok. It’s perfect in fact. It’s time for you to stop focusing on whether others will like you and start focussing on who you are and what you stand for. It’s time for you to be big and brave! 11.01.2022 Do you find some conversations difficult? Do you feel anxious about raising negative feedback with your team members? Maybe you avoid the conversation altogether and just cross your fingers that the issue will go away by itself. You deploy the hope strategy. 11.01.2022 I had the absolute pleasure of speaking to the students at the Methodist Ladies College in Perth this week. We spoke about my favourite topic, unshakeable confidence. The kind of confidence that when you walk in a room, people can feel it. The kind of confidence that is contagious. People just want to be around you. As a leader, people want to follow you and want to commit to your vision. I shared with the young women what they can do right now to create that kind of confiden...ce within them and take that confidence throughout their career. I discussed what it takes in terms of mindset and skillset to create unwavering self-belief in who you are and what you do. I suggested that when they feel feelings of self-doubt start to creep into their minds, to do 3 things: Acknowledge Normalise Celebrate Its important to acknowledge how youre feeling (even if those feelings are a little scary) and then remember that those feelings are absolutely normal. Throughout my career, particularly in the last few years whilst working with leaders in range of different industries and positions, Ive learnt that everyone doubts themselves at times; everyone feels unsure and like theyre an imposter. I remember at one particular event, the CEO was up on stage and was speaking to his new graduates. He came off the stage and said to me "Im not sure how that went. I dont know if I really connected with them." This was a highly experienced CEO who still doubted himself. And you know what? At times everyone does. Its normal. Remember that! Then celebrate those feelings because you know what those feels of self-doubt mean? It means that youre about to stretch yourself. Youre about to learn and grow and thats a wonderful thing. If you never have those feelings of self-doubt, if you never think, "Oh, Im not sure if I can do this," chances are youre well and truly in your comfort zone and not challenging yourself. To become unshakeable, you need to get out there and try new things. You need to step out of that comfort zone and see what youre really capable of and whats possible. 10.01.2022 People reach out and often ask to meet with me. I love it but occasionally Ill meet with someone and well be a reasonable way into the conversation, when I still dont know why Im there. Hmmm. Im thinking to myself, Do you want to sell me something? Do you want to buy something from me? Or maybe you just want to be my friend and hang out? Maybe you want to date me? Lol. I just dont know. Have you ever found yourself in a similar position? It can be frustrating, righ...t? As a leader, every hour is rush hour in your organisation. Youre busy and so are your team members. One of the greatest gifts that you can give to your team is to give them direct and succinct communication that gets to the point. Not in a heartless, I dont care way but in a way that shows them respect and values their time. Now this can be tough if its a tricky situation or if its some feedback that you need to give and youre a little anxious about it. When we feel like this, sometimes we can tip toe around the issue. We can do a little song and dance before we get to the point. In coaching, I can see a conversation go on for 10, 15, even 20 minutes before the leader has actually got to the goal of the conversation i.e.: what it is that they actually want to talk to the person about. When this happens, I can see the team member sitting there looking a little bewildered and nervous, thinking What is this all about? Why are we having coffee? Am I in trouble or not?" Not a great move to inspire trust and confidence in your leadership. When communicating as a leader: - Thoughtfully consider what you want to say and why - Come up with the best method of communication in the particular circumstance how, when and where - And then deliver your message succinctly. Clear and direct communication (without the waffle) builds trust and rapport. People know where they stand with you. It strengthens your relationships and your reputation as a leader. Dont be afraid to get to the point. Champagne and Sunshine, Midja x ................................... Midja creates confident leaders. 08.01.2022 As a leader, you end up with the team you deserve. I discussed this statement with a mentoring client recently. What do you think? Is it true? I sometimes hear leaders talk about their team members in a less than favourable way. They might say things like:... * I just cant trust my team members. * My team is disengaged. * Theyre underperforming. * Theyve just got a really bad attitude. When we feel this way about our team, (and lets face it we all have at one time or another) its the perfect opportunity for us as leaders to turn inwards and to ask ourselves some tough questions like: How am I contributing to the results that Im getting? What am I doing? What am I saying? What am I thinking? And how is all of this impacting on my teams performance? As leaders, we cannot CONTROL what our people do, what they say, or how they think but what we can do is INFLUENCE them. We can influence them in such a way that we end up with the team that we deserve. If you put in the hard work as a leader, you will get the results. If you build your leadership identity and brand, create and communicate a vision, sharpen your coaching skills, and empower your people, they will commit. You will experience the kind of heartfelt commitment from your team members which results in everyone performing at their best. Just magic! If right now, you look around your team and youre not liking what you see, then maybe its time to hold up the mirror, ask yourself some tough questions and make some positive changes. 04.01.2022 Leadership is a marathon, not a sprint. Over the past couple of weeks, in workshops and mentoring sessions, there have been some tears. Leaders are showing me and telling me that theyre tired and for some of them, they have nothing left in the tank. Its understandable, right? I was going to discuss today how leaders can reinvigorate their teams but I think we should put that to one side and instead focus on you, the leader. Right now, your number one priority in leadershi...Continue reading

04.01.2022 A great leader makes time for play. Why? Play: * Stimulates the mind and imagination, increasing creativity * Promotes problem solving and the ability to adapt to situations... * Is a great stress reliever and boosts happiness * Increases productivity and focus * Gives people permission to try new things and experiment, providing the space to fail safely * Builds deep connections with others, boosting camaraderie and corporate empathy So, my question for you is, do you make time to play every day? And what does your play look like? Psychiatrist Stuart Brown, founder of the American National Institute for Play, says: What all play has in common is that it offers a sense of engagement and pleasure, takes the player out of a sense of time and place, and the experience of doing it is more important than the outcome. Brown says that although some people may appear may playful than others, we are all wired by evolution to play. And right now, I think we’re all looking for a little playfulness in our working day.. #leadership #leaders #play #leadershipexpert

04.01.2022 The Unshakeable Leader balances confidence and humility. They know their magic, have a clear sense of purpose and focus on what matters most. As women we bring a unique set of skills, behaviours and viewpoints to the leadership table. However, we also harbour a unique set of problems and fears that prevent us from reaching our full potential. When working with women, I commonly find that negative self-talk, critical self-judgement and the constant pursuit of perfection and ...balance, hold women back from gaining the confidence they need to succeed. When you combine these factors with the unintentional gender biases often found in the workplace, its not hard to see why women can suffer from the imposter syndrome. The solution? A mentoring program for women which builds their confidence and inspires them to lean into their leadership role. .. Women with Confidence 90 Day Mentoring Program. As a result of the program, you will: * Double your confidence as a leader * Clarify your purpose and the next steps to take in your career * Create an authentic leadership brand to increase your presence * Develop the mindset and skillset you need to take the lead Contact Midja at [email protected] #confidence #leadership #leaders #mentor #femaleleaders

03.01.2022 The practice of law is changing and as lawyers we need to embrace a new way of working. These include CREATIVITY, EMPATHY, COMPASSION and HUMAN INTELLIGENCE. The lawyers who can develop these skills will flourish in the new landscape and become the top legal leaders in our profession. 02.01.2022 When Big Rona first hit we leapt out of the gates and sprung into action. Our fight or flight response kicked in and we relied on a surge of powerful adrenaline and cortisol. The sprint was on. We set up remote teams, bought IKEA furniture for our home offices, schooled our kids from the kitchen table and rushed to buy online gym equipment! We were all trying to desperately pivot and create a new normal. Its now months later and reality (at least for the foreseeable f...uture) has set in. The initial rush is over and some of us are left feeling fatigued. Wheres the finish line again?? I believe that right now, your number one priority is to reinvigorate and recharge yourself.
