24.01.2022 Kangarooby Catchment Landcare in Gooloogong had a great morning doing their biannual bird surveys. Today they were very lucky to have some expert help from Eleanor who is a part of the Sustainable Farms team. Some highlights from today :- a Spotted Harrier, Nankeen Kestrels, King Parrots and Striated Pardalotes.

19.01.2022 Check out the awesome work of St Raphaels students. As well as caring for their garden they have been collecting some of the seed from their native garden to try and propagate. How good is that!!!!

19.01.2022 Well it was a bit of a Fungi overload week but just so facinating and fun. Our Local Landcare Coordinator was lucky enough to attend further training over the weekend at Orange. The training put on through Central Tablelands Local Land Services was outstanding. We were able to participate in the first ever Fungi survey at Mt Canobolas. We also got some Fungi photography tips which have been put into practice in the attached pictures from the weekend.

19.01.2022 If you get the chance get out into the bush to check out these beauties This is the Wax-Lip Orchid (Glossodia major) and they are going crazy this season up around Conimbla. These orchids are listed as an important species of Box Gum Grassy Woodlands and are pretty big growing 20-30cm tall with flowers of approx. 4cm across. The pictures don't do the colours justice. You need to see these orchids in real life!!

19.01.2022 Growing the Grazing Revolution held a cluster meeting at Walli yesterday. It was a great turnout with 4 new faces joining the group :-) Some reflections by all on the last 3 years and a great pasture walk through the paddocks. Don't the pastures on this farm look fantastic If you would like to find out more about our 'Growing the Grazing Revolution' project you can visit our website... https://midlachlanlandcare.org//growing-the-grazing-revol/ #smartfarmssmallgrants

19.01.2022 Whilst out doing some gardening on the weekend I came across this little fella. After my initial heart attack I snapped this picture and sent it to Jayden to see if he could confirm this was a legless lizard and not a snake. Turns out this is an Olive Legless Lizard (Delma inornata). Very excited to see it has moved into the garden. This is a reptile that can be found in Box Gum Grassy Woodlands :-) They shelter beneath fallen timber and surface rocks. Apparently when disturbed they can Spring into the air before disappearing into long grass.

17.01.2022 So excited to recieve a copy of this book today. I'm supposed to be heading out to move the cattle but I better have a cuppa, a biscuit or two and just a quick flick through 1st ;-)

17.01.2022 Have you heard about our new 'Soils for the Future' project? You can find out more at https://midlachlanlandcare.org/soils-for-the-future/

16.01.2022 Can't wait for this on Monday. We get a bit of a cameo in this as filming was taking place when Charlie Massey visited Cowra in December 2019 as part of our Growing the Grazing Revolution project :-)

16.01.2022 Did you know that Central Tablelands LLS has created a book ‘Lighting the Path: A Journey to Heal People and Country’ and it traces the challenges, the joys and the discoveries over the past ten years, as local Aboriginal people worked with Central Tablelands Local Land Services to reignite traditional knowledge and reconnect with their country. You can download it for free at the following link. What a fantastic resource... https://www.lls.nsw.gov.au//central-tablelands/key-project

15.01.2022 Does anyone know what this flower is? We are pretty excited to find it coming up in a few spots around Conimbla NP lately and would love to know if anyone has it growing on their farms or in their gardens. This is the Murnong, Yam Daisy or more formally Microseris lanceolata :-) It's listed as an important perennial plant of Box Gum Grassy woodlands The Murnong has edible tubers that are described as 'sweet with a flavor of coconut' I am yet to try them but would love to.

14.01.2022 Cowra Council and NRM Committee small environmental grants available to apply for now. Open to schools and community groups. What great project for the environment could your group do in the next year?

10.01.2022 Awesome day today with 2 lovely students from Canowindra High School coming to do work experience with Mid Lachlan Landcare. This is their 4th day with us and today we covered some Squirrel Glider nest box monitoring and Box Gum Grassy Woodland project monitoring with Dan Florance from Sustainable Farms. We also covered a bit of native seed collection and creek discovery :-) We hope they are getting plenty out of their experiences with us. It's so good showing students what can be done!!

09.01.2022 Some of our new dung beetles have headed to their nurseries already. Fingers crossed they breed successfully. Can't wait till our workshop on Tuesday over at Neville to learn more about these fantastically beneficial insects. :-)

09.01.2022 Some members from Kangarooby Catchment Landcare took part in their annual Spring bushwalk today. Heading out to Borenore Karst Conservation Reserve. It was a fantastic day for it. Unfortunately the caves were closed due to COVID-19 but we still had a wonderful time exploring the area. Can't believe I haven't visited this reserve before. Well worth a trip.

09.01.2022 Wow, this could be interesting!!

08.01.2022 Check out the amount of Superb Parrots in these photos, taken a couple of years ago, over Woodstock way!! So many in the tree of the 2nd photo as well. The Saving our Superb Parrot project has been doing great things to look after the future for this bird. In the Mid Lachlan Landcare region alone landholders have planted an amazing 1200 individually stock proof guarded scattered paddock trees across about 35 farms. Wouldn't it be great to see this many Superbs more regularily into the future Landcare NSW

08.01.2022 Woo hoo. It's Archibird time again!! Photographs of our gorgeous local birds from within 100km of Cowra are encouraged to be entered :-)

05.01.2022 Wow!! Over near Darbys Falls, after some work to enhance a farm dam for additional habitat benefits, the Long Neck turtles are successfully breeding. What fantastic news. You can read all about how Trudi transformed this dam in an article we shared further down our newsfeed :-)

05.01.2022 Very exciting!!! Our dung beetles have arrived ready to hand onto our project participants on Tuesday at the workshop :-) Did you know we have been given the opportunity to introduce another species not established in this region as well. How good is that!! So we have Bubas bison and also Geotrupes spiniger which is really a great opportunity for us. I have just finished feeding and tucking them in for the night ... 03.01.2022 There are a few more spots available for the soils workshop this Friday 20th November near Darbys Falls. If you'd like a better understanding of your soils , join Scotty & Woolly for an afternoon in the soil pit. Call 0459681018 to RSVP.

03.01.2022 May is usually busy with school visits but this May was especially busy. Trudi and the team have hosted 100 HSC students studying Agriculture and Earth and Environmental Studies from High Schools across NSW. We also ran two Landcare workshops at the Age of Fishes for 100 students from Canowindra Public School. What a month!! Thanks so much to the wonderful farmers who open their farms allowing the students to gain insights and practical knowledge to help them with their studies.

02.01.2022 Woo Hoo!! If you look very closely you will see our little Allocasuarina diminuta seeds sprouting. These are the start of our trees to plant for the Glossy Black Cockatoos around Conimbla NP. The lovely Heather at Weddin Community Native Nursery knew we have been patiently waiting to find out if they would sprout and sent through this picture for us. Did you know that Glossy Black Cockatoos mate for life, with pairs maintaining their bond all year round. The female prepares t...he nest hollow and incubates the eggs, only leaving the nest to feed herself after the newly hatched nestling is a week old. Males feed the female and nestling throughout the incubation and brooding period. Once fledged, the young bird is fed by both parents for up to four months and remains with them until the next breeding season. We have had reports of the birds spending time around Cowra this year as well which is awesome. Let us know if you have seen any around your place this year. If you want to find out more about this great project check out this link .. https://midlachlanlandcare.org/glossy-black-cockatoo-proje/ See more
