25.01.2022 We have been observing endangered Carnabys Black Cockatoos (and possibly Baudins Black Cockatoos) flying in flocks of 30-50 birds in the Midland area. Some cockatoos stopped at BIG4 Perth Midland Tourist Park to feast on delicious seeds of Hakea and Marri that we planted a few years ago as part of our Blackadder creek revegetation programme. We are so pleased that our efforts turn into fruitful results providing food for these iconic Western Australian birds and creating happy emotional moments watching them. 13.01.2022 Local Attractions Travel Ideas If you would like to combine history and forest bushwalk with some good food and fun, then Mason and Bird Heritage Trail walk with visit to Masonmill Family Restaurant should be definitely on your itinerary while staying with us! The Mason and Bird Heritage Trail is about 4 km one way. The trail traces part of the 1870's tramway route from Mason Mill, the first pit-saw mill in the Darling Range, to a jetty on the Canning River. It was ...used to transport jarrah timber to Fremantle and Perth. The trail crosses an old wooden bridge built in 1871 by convicts and ticket of leave men. It is believed to be the oldest wooden bridge with wooden rails in Australia. You can also see kaolin pits where clay was excavated in 1960s for local brickworks. The trail lies within a beautiful undulating landscape of jarrah and marri forest that are spectacular in spring time with an abundance of wildflowers We walked the trail from its end (shown on the map below), located near Masonmill Rd, towards its beginning near the Bickley reservoir. The trail does not loop so you need to return the same way or combine with a trail to the Victoria Reservoir. After a long but interesting walk, you can reward yourself with a delicious lunch at the Masonmill Family Restaurant, playing mini-golf or relaxing by the large fish pond Only 25 mins drive from BIG4 Perth Midland Tourist Park, this is a great way to spend your day outdoors. Below are a few suggestions from our own experience: John Forrest National Park is the closest park located within 10 km and has diverse flora: The upland area is dominated by incredible jarrah and marri forest, while along the Jane Brook creek there are flooded gums, swamp peppermints and swamp paperbarks. The woodlands... and forests have rich understorey of many species, including hakeas, acacias, grevilleas, hibbertias. Kalamunda and Beelu National Parks. Kalamunda National Park is located within 15-16 km and is home to the most famous trail, the Bibbulmun Track. It is one of the longest walk trails in the world, stretching almost 1,000 km to Albany on WA’s south coast. The Track passes through a mix of marri, jarrah and wandoo forests and provides a beautiful view of the Darling Scarp. The forests provide an incredible diversity of species. As the trail does not loop, we usually return the same way. The track itself continues towards Mundaring Weir and Lake O’Connor located in the Beelu National Park Korung National Park. We walked a few trails in this park, but the closest to BIG4 Perth, and most popular trail is Lions Lookout located just off Welshpool Rd East, about 20-25 mins drive. This is a moderately difficult trail that provides fabulous views of the Swan Coastal Plain and Perth CBD. The trail offers a diverse range of vegetation communities in wandoo and jarrah forests. In the early 2000s, the Yurisich family relocated the winery & vineyards to the heart of the Swan Valley, where you can visit them today! This behind the scenes tour will open the doors to the very heart of this most innovative winery in the Swan Valley - the production line, the wine cellar with some old fortified wines and, the most exciting part, the cellar door housing the famous 'Frank the Tank' for your wine tasting. The Tour & Taste is a truly enjoyable experience run by the very knowledgeable and friendly team at Olive Farm Wines. 05.01.2022 Noble Falls is fantastic at this time of the year and is only 25 min drive from BIG4 Perth Midland Tourist Park. It is a great place for a family picnic or a bushwalk, or just to enjoy a mesmerizing waterfall in tranquil surroundings. You can explore this area on a 3.5-kilometre walk trail along Wooroloo Brook providing great views and abundance of birds and wildflowers particularly at this time of the year. There are free barbecues and picnic tables available near the car park and Noble Falls Tavern is located nearby. 04.01.2022 Local Attractions Travel Ideas Built to connect East Perth with Optus Stadium, Matagarup Bridge across the Swan River has become a popular landmark in Perth. Matagarup is the name given to this area by traditional landowners and meaning a place where the river is only leg deep and can be crossed. The area is well sign-posted providing history of the place and its development and facts about this pedestrian bridge. ... A walk along the river's eastern foreshore provides nice views of the bridge. There are beautiful Chevron Parklands featuring native plants and nature playgrounds - great fun for kids! Matagarup bridge is located about 30 mins drive from BIG4 Perth Midland Tourist Park. There are plenty of parking spaces by Optus Stadium. We recommend exploring the area around the stadium first and then cross the river and walk along the western foreshore towards Claisebrook Cove for nice views of the bridge and the stadium.
