Lets talk for a moment about the role of gaze in yoga. How often do you allow your eyes to roam around the room, taking sneak peaks at those around you, or even checking out that your toenails are due for a new varnish. This technique is called drishti, a method to assist in drawing your external ...world to being able to look inward. Through drishti we can tune into the inner sensations experienced on a deeper level through concentration by directing the gaze to a neutral focal point. See you on Wednesday

25.01.2022 Yoga is back for Term 3 and it is time to get excited as there is a new Vinyasa Flow Yoga class on offer. Classes will now be held on a Wednesday evening from 6.00pm and Friday morning from 9.30am at the Irwin Rec Centre, Ridley Street, Port Denison. Yoga can be for everybody and these classes will provide a space for you to become in tune with your body, providing you with tools to help with strength, flexibility and confidence not just physically but also mentally. Yoga hel...ps us to relieve stress and tension through connection and being present with each breath to find inner calm. Midwest Yoga offers classes for all levels with an emphasis on alignment and synchronisation of movement with the breath. Each class explores the fundamental poses of yoga, from Sun Salutations, standing and balancing postures, backbends, forward bends, twists and inversions. Each class is a gentle flow yoga class and will provide you with mindfulness, breathing techniques to help with stress, self-care along with offering a mind and body connection. If you have never tried yoga before or are a seasoned practitioner come along and give the class a go, you will find plenty of support and encouragement on and off the mat. Focusing on our body posture can significantly affect the way we breathe and by allowing our awareness to rest on the breath we can experience the whole body move. By synchronising and exploring the breath, we can be accepting how the breath moves, we can shift our awareness to concentrate on breathing with equanimity to allow the subtle sensations of transformation to arise. The peak pose for this week is all about self-exploration through breathwork.

24.01.2022 I felt a little nervous stepping on to the mat this morning. It has been awhile since I really practiced. I mean I have stepped on the mat and allowed my body to intuitively flow and my breath to move. But it’s been a very long time since I really felt a shift in my psyche a loosening of both mind and body. The last few months have been chaotic and my creativity has felt lack lustre. I have felt my students have suffered because I haven’t been 100% present. This pose strengthens your arms and shoulders, the core switches on and can bring balance to your practice. It is sometimes more difficult to lift legs with hands on floor. Therefore the use of props enables you to have a little more length in the arms, exhale press hands firmly into block, engage your core muscles and begin to lift the bottom and legs. Cost: $15.00 Casual This term its all about repetition allowing a deeper insight into the process of awakening because we know where the sequence is heading. By providing a set sequence we can learn the inside and outside of each posture using modifications and props. With a clear intention, we can become fully present in our practice connecting breath, body and mind. Practising yoga with a set sequence allows you to calm the fluctuations of the mind. The objective is to create a feeling of wholeness in each asana, cultivating steadiness and ease whilst exploring how to expand and refine the breath. Sometimes you look but dont see the inner turmoil. For those affected by Suicide it is a long lasting feeling of loss, loneliness and guilt. It is okay to discuss and it is more than okay to ask friends, family and strangers how they are. A poem written by me to shed light to those who have experie...nced loss; When times are tough, hold your head high. No one wants to see you cry. My family can be this way. Death to a cousin. Was it suicide I wonder. Unanswered questions, this is a distraction, move on is my reaction. It is easy to say. Guilty feelings are in my heart, cannot let it tear me apart. Sometimes my smile is a facade. My hurt is hidden away, to be released someday. So many things to look forward to. Family wanted to share with you. You are now gone, for that I mourn. Why didnt you stay? Drugs, depression, tormention. This is not an excuse, to take your own life. I feel anger and sadness at your decision, to leave me this way. 10.01.2022 Change is inevitable. It is what you decide with that change that can help you learn and grow But what about expectation? Can we successfully change without burying ourselves with the weight of expectation? I am one for constantly putting undue pressure on myself. Setting time constraints on where I should be with my yoga practice. Second guessing myself as to why I haven’t mastered a particular pose, meditation or pranayama. The little voice reminding me ‘I am not ...working hard enough. I am not practising enough. I am not committed’. The seed of doubt rearing its ugly head and the mind chatter begins. Can I actually call myself a yoga teacher if I don’t feel a sense of authenticity, am I real enough, raw enough in sharing my emotions and struggles of day to day. Some days I am nailing it. I find the right words, the suitable sequence to teach and you can feel the electric atmosphere in the yoga room Other days my teaching to me feels blah and the questioning and anxious feelings start all over again. Just like a Ferris wheel that goes around and around This is the power of expectation we put upon ourselves. This week we will focus on extending and opening the front of the body through Camel pose. This pose is one of the deepest backbends, but great for beginners to explore the stretch through hips, psoas, abdominals, shoulders and throat. Camel pose also lengthens the core and creates a feeling of the heart-opening whilst strengthening the back of the body including hamstrings, glutes and spinal extensors. We will explore camel pose through the use of props and modifications bringing our awareness to the expansion of the chest and ribcage. Practising with sensitivity and patience whilst deepening our connection to our breath.

Malasana challenges our whole body referring to an element of mobility and stability within the ankles, inner thigh, quadriceps, hamstrings, calves and spine. We will closely examine this posture using modifications to make the pose more accessible. Our joints, strength and mobility play a role in how we feel in the pose. We will take our time to pay attention to what you are feeling and where you feel the sensations to experience the connection of this pose with the breath and body
