17.01.2022 Happy International Day of the Midwife 2020. May all women emerge from their births understanding their own strength and power #IDM2020
17.01.2022 No better way to spend IDM than by providing midwifery care. Heres a little window into my day. I really do have the best job in the world. Women, babies, bellies, kids, dogs - what could be better? *sharing with permission
16.01.2022 Witnessing undisturbed birth in the home setting transformed midwives' attitudes towards birth. Following exposure to homebirth, many midwives felt they were seeing undisturbed birth for the first time. This led them to question their current understanding of physiological birth and develop a new awareness of the powerful influence that the environment has on labouring women. This new understanding resulted in changes to their practice. Thank you Bec Coddington and Caroline Homer. Congratulations on a great piece of research.

14.01.2022 *sharing with permission* One of the silver linings of Covid-19 for some women is those who swapped to homebirth at the 11th hour. Its been a crazy busy ridiculous, but oh so beautiful month. SO many gorgeous homebirths Sleep is overrated right?! Big shout out to Jacqui Wood and Cara McDonald ... 14.01.2022 How divine is this! Big bro had been practising dressing babies on his little sisters doll. He put all the practice to good use when he put his newest little sisters first nappy on. *sharing with permission as always* #homebirth #siblingsatbirth #beautifulboy @kmac1
13.01.2022 New research comparing the outcomes of 500,000 planned home births for women with a low risk pregnancy to planned hospital births with women with a low risk pregnancy. For women homebirth is clearly much safer and not to recognise this shows exactly how little we value women in this debate. Women are: -nearly half as likely to have a C/S and third and fourth degree perineal tear and -more than half as likely to have an epidural, augmentation of labour, episiotomy, forceps or vacuum birth and maternal infection when birthing at home.
13.01.2022 Can we just take a minute to talk about how silly it is. As the restrictions start to ease across many states we are baffled by the lack of attention and focus ...given to our community of pregnant or birthing women and mothers of newborns. Despite the QLD government directive now allowing 2 support people we have heard reports of hospitals under QLD health still restricting it to one person and in NSW there have been no mentions of changes in this regard. Yet pubs (with dining areas), cafes and restaurants opening, funeral and wedding numbers have been increased, amount of allowed visitors in your home has increased and schools are reopening full time as of Monday. We dont need to go into all the research that talks about the value of the right support during birth! So basically, if you have your baby in a pub you have a chance of having the supported birth you want!! And hey you can have 5 people in your home so all the more reason to look at a homebirth. 12.01.2022 Results: The majority of reports made to AHPRA occurred when midwives supported women who chose care considered outside the recommended Australian College of Midwives (ACM) Consultation and Referral Guidelines. During data analysis an overarching theme emerged, Caught between women and the system, which described the participants feelings of working as a PPM in Australia. There were six themes and several sub-themes: The suppression of midwifery, A flawed system, Lack of s...upport, Devastation on so many levels, Making changes in the aftermath and Walking a tight rope forever. The findings from this study reveal that midwives who are under investigation suffer from emotional and psychological distress. Understanding the effects of the process of investigation is important to improve the quality of professional and personal support available to PPMs who are reported to AHPRA and to streamline processes. Conclusion: It is becoming increasingly difficult for PPMs to support the wishes and needs of individual women and also meet the requirements of the regulators, as well as the increasingly risk averse health service.
12.01.2022 It would make great sense to help free up beds and staff in hospitals at a time when resources are going to be desperately overstretched. Medicare rebates for homebirths would make it a viable option for many more women.
12.01.2022 As privately practising midwives we dont have the luxury of going to a store cupboard to find appropriate protective and sanitising gear and products. Thank you to my beautiful neighbour Lyndsey Regan-Evans for making these face masks. Having attended two births two nights in a row, it feels good to be wearing this in public when getting petrol and supplies before I go and visit the new mums and babies. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN PURCHASE MORE HAND SANITISER AND DISINFECTANT WIPES/SPRAY? #eyebagscourteousyoflittlesleep

04.01.2022 We know this is a massive problem for women seeking a private midwife, not only during the corona virus pandemic, but also for the past 8 or so years since women have legally needed a referral to engage a private midwife. We have a massive problem with this locally in the Blue Mountains with some GPs refusing women a referral because of their own bias, which is in no way based on any high level evidence. Its time for Drs to stop being the gate keepers and for women to be able to access the sort of care they desire and deserve. Please consider sending an email to the ACM if you are having issues or have had issues with getting a referral from your GP, the ACM will also write to the GP directly. Please email [email protected]
03.01.2022 Sitting on a finished project is somewhat agonising. Last night we decided to alleviate some of that pain and host a VERY small screening of our film. Before ...last night, absolutely no one outside of the three of us and our post production team had seen Birth Time, the documentary. So we gathered together some of our nearest and dearest (as many as we were allowed!), some of the key players in our film and the people who had held space for us over the last four years and revealed the product of our labour. The relief of having a room of people swinging between tears and laughter was extraordinary- in fact after the opening scene Jacqui Wood shouted through the cinema- Its SO good already!!! We wont forget that in a hurry. It just gave us a tiny window into how it will feel to be able to premiere our film around the country to cinemas brimming with people. Given the current landscape of COVID/ cinema restrictions/ uncertainty, coupled with the on call schedules of two birth workers, our projected release date at this stage is February 2021. It feels like a lifetime away but we also know it will be here in a flash. We cannot wait to tour our beautiful country and share with you all. A huge thanks to Cat and all at Spectrum Films for your meticulous work over the past 6 months, and for hosting us last night. We landed in the right place when we landed with you. 03.01.2022 HOMEBIRTH AWARENESS WEEK One of the many misconceptions, or fears, I hear about homebirth, is what happens if I need stitches? Rest assured- homebirth ...midwives are very skilled at post birth repairs. First and second degree tears can be sutured at home, just the same as they would be in hospital. A sterile field is created, chlorhexadine is used to clean the area requiring suturing, lignocaine is administered for local anesthetic, and dissolvable sutures are used for the repair. 3rd and 4th degree perineal tears require a different suturing material, different anesthesia to what can be used at home, and a surgeon who is skilled in such repairs. These tears require a transfer to hospital. Thankfully it is rare for those tears to happen at home. Here you can see how @midwifejohunter set up a clean, comfortable area on the woman’s bed using chairs for her feet to rest on, and afterward she could roll over in her own bed and feed her baby, where she wouldn’t move from for the rest of the night. All in her own space, with her trusted care provider. . #homebirth #homebirthawarenessweek2020 #debunkingmyths #birth See more
03.01.2022 From Homebirth Australia - Tune in to Women On The Line on 3CR Community Radio tomorrow (will also be podcasted for those not in Melb) for this discussion of how COVID-19 is making hospital maternity care worse, birth trauma, the magic of homebirth, and what you can do to help win Medicare rebates for homebirth. Hint: it involves sending a One Big Push! email to Greg Hunt MP here: https://homebirth.good.do/homebirthmedicarerebates/... Check out this gorgeous photo of Homebirth Australia coordinator Aimee Sing (Birth Aims) and Midwife Jo by Jerusha Sutton - cant you just feel the oxytocin rush!
03.01.2022 This is such a powerful story. It tells another homebirth story that people often dont share. The story of a necessary transfer to hospital and the strength, surrender and courage it takes for women to go to the place they least wanted to go and have things done to their body that they did not want, for the safety of their baby. Kate Randall has done a beautiful job of very sensitively telling this story through her photography. Babies also have their own journey and sometimes, despite all the work and all the planning, the baby decides differently. This is not a failed homebirth, its a successful homebirth. Romi, you are magnificent
03.01.2022 In choosing homebirth, women disclosed that they wanted to avoid specific medical interventions and the medicalised hospital environment. Nearly 60% of women reported at least one risk factor that would have excluded them from a publicly funded homebirth programme. Many women described their previous hospital experience as traumatic (32%) and in some cases, leading to a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD, 6%). Only 5% of women who reported on their homebirth experience considered it to be traumatic (PTSD, 1%). The majority of these were associated with how they were treated when transferred to hospital in labour.
02.01.2022 ICM statement supporting the safety of Homebirth and supporting the human rights of pregnant and birthing women during this COVID-19 pandemic. In countries where the health systems can support homebirth, healthy women experiencing a normal pregnancy and with support from qualified midwives, with appropriate emergency equipment, may be safer birthing at home or in a primary maternity unit/birth centre than in a hospital where there may be many patients (even non-maternity patients) with Covid-19
02.01.2022 MEDICARE REBATES FOR MIDWIFERY CARE AT HOME - we need more signatures to make this happen. We are close to this being a reality. PLEASE sign at share. This would give access to in-home midwifery care for ALL women and ease the burden on our hospitals.
