23.01.2022 "For me, MIECAT is like a big long hug. The space offered is safe, transparent and available to all. MIECAT allows me to connect and immerse into my values, and be who I need to be within each moment. As I continue to travel through my MIECAT experience with curiosity, I know my process will form an outcome unique to me." 22.01.2022 Jessie is a MIECAT trained arts therapist, teacher at MIECAT, and artist. This is a wonderful video from Jessie and The Dax about Jessie's arts practice. @Jessiebdart and @daxcentre on Instagram #studiodaxonline We are also fortunate to have Jessie teaching our Engaging with Materials unit this weekend (the third unit of our Masters in Therapeutic Arts Practice). A perfectly aligned subject for Jessie, as you will see!
21.01.2022 Congratulations to Kerri Weymouth on this inspiring project, produced as part of her Masters practicum...
21.01.2022 What I love about Miecat is the sense of community, and the safe, open learning environment lecturers and other students create. The opportunity to learn new approaches and build skills through emergent processes, and personal lived experiencing provides an insightful and engaging tool for discovery! I have been challenged, overjoyed, frustrated, concerned, tired, fulfilled, and supported each experience providing valuable new knowings. 2020 has been a year of challenges... including transitioning to online learning, Zoom classes and Microsoft Teams. With so much uncertainty, now more than ever, we need to connect with one another, and there is no better place to do that than Miecat online or in person. Thanks to Elaine Camlin for sharing her reflections and images capturing her explorations at Miecat. 20.01.2022 Congratulations to our lovely student Sarah who is doing her practicum at ONJ as part of her final year in the MIECAT Masters in Therapeutic Arts Practice. What a wonderful project!
19.01.2022 Brilliant work by our Professional Doctorate candidate Em Hodges . We agree that the therapeutic space and place is really important and contributes to how we companion. This has certainly been raised into awareness in our teaching now that we are currently working remotely. Rich learning ahead for our unit 3 - engaging with materials - students, who will take time to consider this also. Wishing Emerge - Women and Children's Support Network all the best. The work you do in our community is invaluable. Thank you.
18.01.2022 Some much needed inspiration and joy...
17.01.2022 I knew I was in the right place as soon as I went to the information workshop. Over the three years, the balance of academic rigour and experiential learning was just right for me. All of the staff were so supportive. They come with a wealth of experience and you could tell that through their compassionate mentorship. Quite often the changes we make in our lives feel miniscule and not at all ground breaking in the moment, however, it seems that each small step we take on an ...authentic path of our own making, leads us closer to who we want to be. Looking back on this depiction of me with the red umbrella, this may have been a point that illustrated less need for protection, and more faith and confidence in the MIECAT procedures and how they held my intention of self discovery. Thanks to MIECAT graduate, Jo Roszkowski, for sharing her reflections and images. Our intake process for 2021 is now open, offering immersive workshops so you can experience first hand the way we work at MIECAT starting next week! 17.01.2022 The information workshop was like nothing Id done before. The session was so well run and the exercises I participated in were engaging and intriguing (they very quickly tapped into parts of my lived experience that I didnt have words for), I was hooked. One of the things I loved the most about my time at MIECAT was how much it challenged me. Or rather, what I gained from being challenged in this way. Always from a place of safety and trust, the course work challenged me ...to explore and understand deeper parts of my own lived experience in new and different ways. In turn, I learnt to hold space for others, as together, we sought to make better sense of their lived experience. I found this work to be incredibly rewarding. It demanded my presence and intuition as much as the methodology that I was learning. From these challenges, came immense personal growth, confidence in a new skill set and new ways of being in the world. MIECAT has a wonderful way of centring each students personal experience at the heart of their own learning. My advice to new or prospective students would be to do your very best to keep an open mind and trust in the processes that you are learning. They can be challenging, but they can lead to some incredible discoveries. Thanks to MIECAT graduate, Sarah Sivaraman, for sharing her reflections and video. 15.01.2022 "For me studying at MIECAT was like learning to swim. I often felt vulnerable and out of my depth amongst the sea of new people, big feelings and vast embodied experiences. But all our teachers were experienced, compassionate life guards along the way, providing direction, support and encouragement. During the final streak of my Masters project, my supervisor made me a tin foil gold star. A hard earned representation and acknowledgement of my experience of working through A... report exploring the practise of combining therapeutic arts procedures with birth companion whilst becoming a mother myself. That gold star is framed and hanging in my home, as a reminder of how incredibly capable I am and how we most often have the ability to stretch and expand ourselves in ways we didn't think were possible until we are doing it. Key words that come to mind to describe my experience at MIECAT are: supportive, individualised, flexible, expansive, relational, humour, friendships, inspirational and safe." 14.01.2022 Good morning everyone and welcome to Day 3 of Engaging with Materials for our 'intensive group' of students. We are still on-line but that doesn't stop us from developing an amazingly creative, rich learning space for this subject! Students spent Day 1 mindfully collecting materials, creating their making / studio spaces, identifying a creative nook, locating an object (which will be altered over the Days to come), visiting the arts (online), considering their reflexivity (...what they bring of themselves) and creating little self-care kits. The work has been incredible and our online learning spaces after Day 2 are buzzing. Thanks to Brigitte Weber who has kindly agreed to us sharing part of her collecting materials with you -"home-made fingerpaint in vegemite jars... contains sugar-edible". Love the Aussie touch of the Vegemite jars Brigitte Weber! Keep up the great work Unit 3 intensive students. You are awesome!
14.01.2022 The Venny is a wonderful early intervention and prevention organisation based in Kensington and is in close proximity to the Kensington high-rise public housing estate, and the 9 towers that have been placed in hard lockdown for the last 5 days. MIECAT teacher Danni, and MIECAT graduate Ciara are part of the team who are currently running online programs for kids in need, and is also sending care packages to families in the towers with art materials for kids. "Thank you so m...uch to those of you have sent donations to The Venny Inc over the past few days!!! The immediate response and offers of support that have been received has been amazing. Since the lockdown started the Venny team has been working with lots of other organisations. We negotiated access to the towers last night and were able to get some emergency food aid to families. We are working to respond to what is being requested from the kids and communities in the towers. This week, online play will re-commence on Tuesday and we are organising art and activity packs to go out to the children. This will be an opportunity for the youth in local communities to connect to the Playworkers at The Venny and more importantly, to each other. From all of The Venny staff - we thank you! Please see the link below if you can spare anything at all. And to all the families in lockdown in the Melbourne flats, we are with you all the way." 13.01.2022 Prior to studying at MIECAT I was a practising artist. The introductory session at MIECAT reminded me of my previous degree, in its experiential and practical nature. I was excited by the prospect of learning in this way hands on. This was the most amazing part of my time at MIECAT after every subject, I felt I had really been immersed in learning and practice. During the Masters, I completed practicum at an arts based disability day service. The Postgrad and Masters ins...tilled me with real confidence in my ability as a therapeutic practitioner. 12.01.2022 Another wonderful MIECAT practicum student doing incredible work! Congratulations Jodie on supporting young people at Headspace Narre Warren through your Arts Project - it looks amazing. "Welcoming all young people (12-25) to get involved!! To enjoy art-making while exploring what mental health means for you or your lived experience of mental health. No need to be 'good at art', more about what comes from art-making for you. I hope that this process brings a little joy, refl...ection or some new knowings, even helping just a little during this uncertain time. The large mural will be revealed as a representation from our young people, a 'Collection of Solidarity' and understanding, opening up conversation and support around mental health." 11.01.2022 Miecat was like a container and my story unfolded inside of it like a long poem until it spilled over into the practicum context. There were many beautiful moments and quite a few messy ones. During my years of studying I have discovered a lot about my self that I can use in relation to my self, others and my environment. Trust in the creative process is the most important aspect and openness to lifelong learning. I now experience life in it self as an intrinsically therap...eutic creative process and when I listen carefully I am fully immersed in its flow. 09.01.2022 I am in my final year at MIECAT and it is the most fulfilling, enriching training I have ever undertaken. Every interaction with MIECAT is personal and professional growth. 09.01.2022 WINDOW THEATRE by Nikkita Goncalves "Unfortunately due to COVID 19 restrictions, I could not attend my placement: an acute aged-care facility, for some time. In response to limitations and understanding that the residents could not easily leave the lodge, receiving fewer visitors, and no entertainment or volunteers could enter the facility, the mood was low. After receiving some inspiration from various sources (news stories, YouTube videos) of kind, creative individuals try...ing to connect with loved ones in nursing homes, I devised my plan. I wanted to bring some joy to the individuals I have grown so fond of, I hoped to brighten their day, even if it was for 5 minutes. Admittedly I was nervous to perform at first, doubting this would be received the way I intended it to be, but it has seemed to be a hit with the residents and nurses. So far I have created 3 window works, each having a different flavour, using spontaneous dancing, music that is familiar to their demographic, and some interesting costumes. During these anxious and lonely times, I wanted my audience to know they are not forgotten or alone, that respite in these challenging times is necessary and joy cultivates connection, even through a window." . 08.01.2022 MAKING SENSE, THE ARTEFACT podcasts via link below. Thanks to final year student, Sharyn Latham, for her 2020 story... . How is it that a student who has, in the past, been unable to trust her spoken voice to actually speak when she needed it to, not only comes to form sound recordings for MIECAT, but also records her voice for all to hear, as an autoethnographic storyteller. Such ideas once would have seemed unfathomable to me, but we all have a COVID yarn to tell. My 2020... MIECAT story emerged in mythical form, revealing itself among the vapour of crowns whilst lost in the forest of expectations. I suddenly needed to find new ways to connect. There was exploration through spaces devoid of face-to-face contact and grounding through shared experiences. Depthing of connection seemed to occur through sound and the offering of Inter-subjective responses as sound. These acoustic offerings serve to validate experiencing and have now become an important part of my on-line companioning practice along with other encounterings. The hope is that others who come across this artefact may gain some insight to the 2020 experience of contributors, as well as an offering of processes, procedures and values available through The MIECAT Form of Inquiry. https://miecat.edu.au/facility-i/making-sense-the-artefact/ . 08.01.2022 The MIECAT Institute provided me with an alternate way of being/thinking as a therapeutic practitioner that was significantly different to my saturated experiences of being a mentally ill human within the psychiatric system. As I delved further into the therapeutic procedures at MIECAT, my own self changed with these learning experiences and the considered space that they provide. I am a person who lives with mental illness and I think its important that I work as an art th...erapist and have a voice in this space. The MIECAT Institute has provided me with the tools to make space for others voices and experiences in a way that allows me a different view/lens to what our experiencing means. I am truly grateful for the learning, community and space for meaning making that The MIECAT Institute provides its students. 06.01.2022 Working within a hospital environment during the year of Covid was quite a surreal experience; I wondered how I could support people through this time of isolation, not only through Covid but through the experience of Cancer. 03.01.2022 I switched studies from counselling to MIECAT after hearing about how high quality the learning experience was there. I was hooked after experiencing the information session and knew it was for me. MIECAT really helped me enhance and deepen my therapeutic skills through its experiential, multimodal and relational learning approach. I’ve been able to use elements of what I learned at MIECAT in all my roles to date. I love so much about MIECAT: the experiential nature of lea...rning; the ability to have open discussions, collaborate and engage in art-making; getting to be taught by and learn alongside incredible practitioners who really do practice what they preach; and lastly, learning a meaningful, effective and embodied approach to creative arts therapy. .
