Update - 1 July 2020 This new migration program year starting from 1 July 2020, the Federal Government was unable to release 189, 190, and 491 visa quotas for the 2020-21 year. However, the Department of Home Affairs is unable to allocate new GSM quotas and they have not given the state governments their new GSM quotas for this new migration year. ... Late October 2020, Federal Government may be issued the invitation for States and Territories when they will set their budget. On the other hand, the update of the occupation list is also not confirmed yet. Who will be affected: There will be no changes for those who already hold 189, 190, and 491 visas. Applicants who have already received invitations will not be affected. There will be a little bit changed for those who already applied for EOIs and they may need to wait until the program does reopen. With all the travel restrictions and directions from the department, it indicates that the General Migration program this year will be focusing on critical occupations and onshore applicants. You can also expect the states to start inviting applicants for these limited occupations very soon for a short period of time.

08.01.2022 The Australian Immigration department released new laws giving much needed concession for both certain current visa holders and former visa holders. This includes for both who can not return to Australia and those who are in Australia but lost their jobs. It will be a relief for those who are willing to apply for the following visas: Skilled Regional (subclass 887) visa... Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa Safe Haven (subclass 790) visa Business Innovation and Investment (subclass 188/888) visas. The Australian government has defined a for those who have been specifically impacted by Covid-19 that started from 1st February 2020. The end date is to be determined later as the pandemic is still ongoing. The subclass 489 visa holders can apply for and be granted subclass 887 visa. The expired subclass 489 visa holders who are covered by the Concession Period may be eligible to apply as well. The subclass 489 visa holders are required to reside and work in certain regional areas for specific period of time to be eligible to apply for the subclass 887 visa. They'll also need to be in Australia for the grant of the 887 visa. The concessions are also made to help with 2 years residence requirement. The work requirement might be reduced to 9 months from 12 months or possible even a shorter period. The department stated reasonable limits have been placed on concessions in order to strike a balance between providing flexibility and maintaining program integrity. The applicants for subclass 485 visa who are outside Australia can now apply. There is no need to hold the Student subclass 500 visa within the 6 months before applying for subclass 485 visa. The requirement to also have completed the Australian Study in the 6 months before applying for subclass 485 visa is extended to 12 months. You can also do this whilst overseas. Many of these concessions relate to completing a period of time of residence, work, studies or the application itself. The federal government announced major changes to policies to make sure Australia remains a high priority for study destinations.... The changes made to improve the COVID-19 pandemic situation for the international students are as follows: Granting student visas will be recommenced by the government in all locations to new students. When the borders re-open, students will already have visas and they will be able to make arrangements to travel. Visa applications will be free of charge if they are unable to complete their degree within validity of their current visa due to COVID-19. The students who are studying online outside Australia with student visa will be able to use that study to count towards the Australian study requirement for a post-study work visa. Graduates who held student visa will be able to apply for a post study work visa from outside of Australia if they are unable to return due to COVID-19.
