22.01.2022 The Sydney Morning Herald and SBS report on backlash from business leaders following Labor's plan to increase the minimum wage for temporary skilled visa holders by 21 per cent to $65,000. Tally Konstas, owner of Melbourne bars Emerald Peacock and The Seamstress, says that the increase "takes choice away from the employer and the employee" and restricts opportunities for migrant staff, much like his own, to grow in their roles. Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive James Pearson says that "migrants don't take jobs, they create them" and that the proposed changes would be a "body blow" for regional areas.

19.01.2022 www.migrationsydney.com The working holiday visa (subclass 417) allows young visitors to travel and work in Australia. People under the age of 30 from certain countries, including the UK, Ireland, Canada and some European nations, can apply for the visa. It allows them to stay in Australia for up to a year and work here too - but they can only stay with employers for a maximum of six months. Working holiday visa owners can apply for a second year in Australia, but to do so they must complete 88 days of farm work by the time their first year ends.

15.01.2022 Three ways a working holiday in Australia will help your career Created on Monday, 16 December 2013 02:40 Written by Editorial staff Three ways a working holiday in Australia will help your career Whether you're from "across the ditch" in New Zealand or from the other side of the world, you - and your career - may benefit from a working holiday in Australia. Offering resume-enhancing and life-enriching experiences, working holidays are becoming one of the best ways to fast t...rack your career and learn new skills. Australia, with its varied natural attractions and tropical climate, not to mention its thriving economy, is right up there on the list of must-see destinations - so much so that the United Nations named it as one of the world's most content countries in its 2013 World Happiness Report. Why not combine a holiday 'down under' with valuable work experience in the global city of Sydney? Or perhaps the vibrant metropolis of Melbourne is more suited to your tastes? Regardless of your city of choice, here are three ways a working holiday in Australia can boost your career prospects. Get out of your comfort zone Yes, Australia is home to beautiful white sandy beaches and bustling cities. But if you're looking to break out of your shell and show potential employers you have what it takes to overcome adversity and tackle challenges head on, Australia also offers a wide variety of adventurous pursuits. From working as a farmhand in the Outback, to becoming a surf teacher or working in the mines in Perth, there is an abundance of outdoor jobs that are bound to stand out on your CV. Forget 'bartender' or 'nanny' - try 'divemaster' or 'sailing crew member' instead! Gain experience in the Asian Century Due to its close proximity with Asia, Australia has been actively improving its international relations policy with its Asian neighbours. By doing a working holiday in Australia, you will be in a good position to observe how the Asian economy is influencing the local environment and vice versa. For more information, check out the Australia in the Asian Century White Paper released by the government earlier this year. Make money while learning about a new culture It's no secret the Australian economy is doing well. Thanks to a boom in mining, Australia has enjoyed a relatively stable economic climate over recent years, especially in comparison to other popular working holiday destinations such as London or New York. Although that's not to say finding a job will be easy, but if you have skills and are willing to work hard you could stand to earn decent wage while exploring a new culture. When you go home, you will be armed with a fresh perspective and valuable international experience - both excellent traits in the eyes of future employers. Now that you know Australia is the place to be, why not organise your visa application?

11.01.2022 Preparing the right documentation for your visa application Created on Sunday, 29 December 2013 22:22 Written by Editorial staff Preparing the right documentation for your visa application Paperwork - the essential task we all love to hate. Despite the rise of tablets and laptops, of digitalised documentation and online application forms, there is still - and probably always will be - the need for good, old-fashioned paperwork.... When it comes to making a visa application to live, study or work in Australia, preparing the right paperwork is of utmost importance. Sending in a faulty copy of your passport or an identity photo that is slightly the wrong size could make all the difference between an approved visa and a "please try again". And with the cost of visas - in terms of both time and money - you really want to get the green light the first time around. Here are a few tips to help ensure you have all the right paperwork. Do your research Applying for a visa can take time. Plan ahead and do your research, thoroughly reading all relevant documentation and advice on governmental websites, so you know exactly what you need to do before you embark on the task. Once you clearly understand what it is you need to provide, you can start ticking items off the list. Take your time and be accurate when submitting information. Seek assistance If you are in the position to consult a registered migration agent in Australia, this is an excellent opportunity to have an experienced professional pass their eye over your application. Not only will they be able to let you know your chances of succeeding, they may even be able to provide advice on applying for different types of visas later down the track, such as permanent residency. Triple check What is it your teacher always used to tell you in primary school? Proofread! Triple check your application before you send it in. If possible, have a friend or family member - or migration agent - look over your submission too. A little forward thinking and extra care could make the application process go significantly smoother, so you can then concentrate on the fun aspects of moving to Australia - like that sun tan you're bound to get, or which state you are going to live in!

08.01.2022 Good Article by David Coote Eligible for Australian Permanent Residency- Student course Leading to ?... From conversations over the past month, two things are increasingly clear to me. Firstly, many overseas students arrive in Australia enrolled in courses with impressive names but of no significance as part of a pathway to Permanent Residence in Australia. How do you check whether that is the case for you? If you are confident of your research skills, then go online, look for the Combined Skilled Occupations List and see if your course qualifies you for any occupation on the list. If it does not, then there is no pathway to Permanent Residence for you. When should you do that? As soon as possible after you arrive here. As soon as you think that maybe you would like to live in Australia. Like the Chinese student who came to see me in the last year of her degree, only to find that the occupation she was preparing for was not on the list for any visa. We had a long discussion about which occupation on the list she would be comfortable with. With one semester left of her Bachelor degree, she crammed as many subjects as possible into that semester related to her new choice. Then she enrolled in a Masters degree, hunted for a job related to her new choice of occupation and eventually succeeded in qualifying for a Permanent Residence visa. She was very afraid of what her parents in China would say about the extra cost of her having to do a Masters degree. But as it turned out, her father preferred the occupation she had chosen so all was well. Secondly, most overseas students choose to live with other overseas students of the same language background. This is understandable, because it is more comfortable in an unfamiliar country. But it does not help with developing fluency in the language of the country you are now in. Once a client came to see me who was studying in Australia having come from Germany. His spoken English was excellent and I congratulated him on it. He smiled and said When I arrived here two years ago, I left my friends at the airport and went to board with a family who knew no German at all. It meant that I had to learn English very quickly, and so I did. No radio or television in German, only in English. If you are in situations 1. or 2., make an appointment to see us as soon as possible. We will discuss your pathway and how study and work experience should fit it. As well, we will give you a method of taking responsibility for controlling the development of your own fluency in English. Only Partner visas have no English requirement, and that may well change in the future David Coote

08.01.2022 The Australian and the ABC report on an "orchestrated scam" where an increasing number of Malaysian visitors are arriving in Australia on tourist visas with the intention of either immediately claiming asylum or doing so after earning money in seasonal farm work. Australian Border Force officers are now refusing entry at airport gateways to an average 20 Malaysians each week. 1,400 protection visa lodgements came from Malaysians while they were in Australia in 2014-15. By last year, annual lodgements had grown to 9,300.

01.01.2022 How to tailor your CV for Australian employers Created on Thursday, 19 December 2013 08:39 Written by Editorial staff How to tailor your CV for Australian employers Updating your resume is hard work in your home country, let alone in a completely new one! If you are moving to Australia in the near future, you might want to enlist the help of an experienced migration agent.... Not only can migration consultants assist you in submitting a successful visa application, they can also provide you with practical advice about finding employment. Get in touch with an agent today to discuss your unique situation and benefit from personalised support. In the meantime, here are three tips to help you tailor your CV for Australian employers. Never presume - always check! Job markets often differ from country to country. And with new job markets you can have a whole new set of unspoken rules. For example, is it common practice to include references on your resume where you're from? Or what about CV length - is one page the maximum, or are two pages acceptable? Little "unspoken rules" such as these can come naturally to you when job hunting in a familiar city. Yet the game could be completely different somewhere new. It's best to talk to an Australian professional or migration agent to find out what is considered "normal" in your industry. There's no harm in checking, but there can be harm in presuming! 'Australianise' your spelling This tip is especially relevant if you are relocating from the United States or Canada. It's time to say goodbye to your beloved 'z' words - Australians spell words such as 'organization' with an 's'. There are many more subtle yet important differences, too, so you may want to get your hands on a national dictionary. Rewriting your CV in line with Australian spelling will minimise the risk of you "standing out" as a foreigner and will also show you have made an effort to do your research. Be clear It's always important to be clear and concise when describing previous work experience, but if you are visiting Australia from another country, this takes on a whole new significance. Chances are, your prospective employer will not have heard of your previous place of employment unless it was a big, multinational organisation. Therefore, don't leave any room for ambiguity or just presume they will know what you are inferring. Spell out your skills in the clearest way possible to have peace of mind your CV will be comprehensive and competitive.
