23.01.2022 Interview on the impact of border closure on the education industry

20.01.2022 Recent interview on SBS Radio/Spanish on the English language requirement to be introduced for partner visas.

20.01.2022 Wednesday, 14 October 2020descriptionMedia release Protecting partner visa applicants against family violence The Morrison Government is strengthening the Partner visa program to further protect vulnerable migrants from people who commit violent crimes against women and children.... Family violence is unacceptable and will not be tolerated under any circumstance. It doesn't matter who you are, where you come from, whether you are here on a visa or have Australian citizenship no one should be trapped in a violent relationship. Sadly we know some Partner visa applicants, particularly those with low English proficiency, are particularly at risk. They are often less likely to have an established support network in Australia, less likely to understand Australian laws and less likely to know how and where to seek assistance. To counter this, the Government will extend the family sponsorship framework to Partner visas, which will require an Australian citizen or permanent resident sponsor of a Partner visa to be assessed against character and sponsorship obligations and approved before a visa application can be made. It will also require sponsors to agree to certain results of their character checks being shared with their partner prior to the visa application being lodged. This may include information indicating a potential threat, such as charges and convictions of a violent nature. This ensures their partner can make an informed decision about whether or not to proceed with the visa application, especially in circumstances where children are involved. It also means applicants can feel empowered to walk away from a potentially violent relationship based on the information shared, before they lodge and pay for the visa application. The changes build on existing provisions in Australia's migration laws to allow provisional Partner visa or Prospective Marriage visa holders who experience family violence to continue with their permanent visa application even if their relationship breaks down. New requirements, announced last week, for Partner visa applicants and their permanent resident sponsors to make reasonable efforts to learn English will also support migrant women and families. Changes to the Partner visa framework and English language requirement will come into effect in late 2021 and will apply to new applications only. Further details will be developed over the coming months, with final details announced next year. https://minister.homeaffairs.gov.au//Protecting-partner-vi

14.01.2022 I was born in Peru and my first year of life i lived in Wales, after returning to Lima and since the age of 5 I attended a Brittish school in Peru, in the reception of the school, always, for the 12 years I spent at school hang the photo of the Queen of the UK and Prince Philip. When I turned 18, my first paid job was as a TESOL teacher at the Britanico a British language institute linked with British Council, the Queen and Prince Philip's photos were also present there. By ...21, I migrated to Australia, an although quickly I accepted the ideals of a republican Australia, it was always a source of curiosity and somewhat admiration that I saw how the monarchy gave the Commonwelath of Australia some sense of stability and it is with this admiration that I gave my oath of allegiance when I became a Citizen of this country that gave me and my family a home. For some reason the passing today of Prince Philip brought back all these memories, maybe because it is in some way the passing of an era, the passing of an image that has always been in my life in some way, albeit in the background. There is also sadness to see that the Queen will now be alone, having lost her spouse and partner for most of her life. I am two days from celebrating my 24 years of marriage and I can only imagine the sorrow and loss the Queen must be now feeling for her partner of 74 years. He was loyal to his Queen and the Crown, that should be celebrated. RIP.
