16.01.2022 You might hear a lot about magnesium and how good it is for your body, but how can you tell if you need it? Some common deficiency signs are fatigue, headaches, anxiety, insomnia, low mood, chocolate cravings, muscle twitches or spasms and elevated blood pressure. Daily stress, heavy exercise, drinking coffee & sugary foods can all be responsible for using up your precious stores, so it’s important to eat foods like green vegetables, fruits, nuts & seeds, dark chocolate/raw... cacao & legumes to top yourself up. If you are still experiencing symptoms (including during your PMS week), supplements are also super helpful. But all magnesium is not created equal! IMO the best quality and easy to absorb types come in powders rather than tablets, are water soluble, and are in citrate or glycinate form. The dose is also critical for optimum benefit - around 300-600mg is appropriate depending on your size and severity of symptoms. I love to prescribe at bedtime to aid restful sleep, but also because magnesium alkalises stomach acid, so best not to interfere with food breakdown if your digestion is compromised. Magnesium is responsible for 100’s of reactions in the body, and crucial for helping you feel great! #magnesiumbenefits #womenshealth #nutritionist #periodproblems #pmsproblems #constipation #bowelhealth See more

12.01.2022 Connecting with your ovaries! We know they are in there somewhere but it can be a nice part of relaxation to ‘tune in’ and see what you feel. If you aren’t familiar with this type of thing, just try not to think too hard and trust what comes up. Firstly, how to find them ~ hold your hands over your pelvic area making a triangle, with your thumbs touching at your belly button. Where the tips of your little fingers naturally fall is about the location of your ovaries. Hold... the palms of your hands over the area & take some slow deep breaths. You may be able to feel a pulsing energy or warmth. This may be more obvious during your ovulation time. Send some love, light, gratitude into your ovaries ~ they are amazing organs that help keep you well by the hormones they help to produce Let me know how it goes if you try it! #hormonehealth #womenshealth #naturopathbrisbane #periodhealth #abdominalmassage #ovaries #ashgrove4060 #northlakesqld #womenshealthbrisbane #meditation See more

10.01.2022 Licorice for gut health - and no, not the sweetie ones I’m afraid! Though if you crave licorice, this post could be for you. I love this plant for its variety of uses, including digestive & adrenal support. The two are often so closely linked together. Do you get tensed up & constipated when you are stressed? Licorice is a natural (mild) laxative, as well as an adrenal tonic. It provides minerals and electrolytes, curbs sweet cravings and helps your body absorb magnesiu...m more efficiently. Magnesium is calming, relaxes muscles including your bowels to help you ‘go’. Licorice also provides a demulcent action, helping to soothe & calm inflammation in the gut. It is naturally sweet - brew your root tea for at least 20 minutes to allow the rounded flavour to come through. It will raise blood pressure when used regularly, so be aware if this is something you need or not. I also use it regularly for specific hormone imbalances such as for those with PCOS or excess androgen (male) hormones, along with other synergistic herbs. So.. if you do crave licorice, it can be a sign that you need some adrenal nourishment & a few extra minerals, maybe even a little bowel support. Try some on a daily basis and see how you feel x #licoriceroot #herbalmedicine #herbalist #naturopath #womenshealth #hormonebalance #fertility #pcos #periodproblems See more

06.01.2022 Painful periods are due to many factors - one of them being issues with blood flow during your period itself. As the uterus is unable to efficiently expel the lining, more cramping & squeezing is a way for your clever body to attempt to shed efficiently. If this sounds like you, a lack of blood flow probably isn’t just present during your period, it’s low all the time! Think about what you might do through month to diminish or worsen blood flow & maybe even ovulation. As ...much as I love helping women & girls to address symptoms with herbal medicine & important nutrients, there are plenty of other areas to look for clues as to why symptoms are occurring. Some common culprits are extended periods of sitting (particularly with poor posture), eating lots of ‘cold’ (raw or chilled) foods, draughts around your tummy & kidney area, and frequently wearing heels. So to help your period pain - try to sit less in favour of standing & moving around, or sit on an exercise ball at your desk so you can move your pelvis. Go for walks, do some soothing self massage on your belly, use warmth such as heat packs, and focus on cooked & heated food. Are there any ways you find help your overall period health? 03.01.2022 Marshmallow for bowel health. If you are thinking of the yummy sugar marshmallows, unfortunately notalthough the root extract was originally used for making them (and when I make home made marshmallows I do use it!). Because it has a mucilage/demulcent (slippery) quality it is great for helping reflux, ulcerations or inflammation of the gut. This also applies to the bowel, where it can soothe inflamed mucous membranes and is used effectively for IBS type symptoms. Becaus...e of its slippery-ness it is more effective for constipation prone situations. Marshmallow also helps to modify the bowel flora to improve the micro biome and therefore immune health. It is naturally sweet so makes tea blends taste delicious! Although for patients with sluggish bowels, I recommend a cold infusion - adding the root to room temperature water & letting it steep overnight before drinking through the next day. You can even add it to your smoothie instead of other liquids, to make it extra medicinal #constipation #ibssupport #microbiome #womenshealthmatters #herbalist #naturopath #herbmagic #coldinfusions #ashgrove4060 #northlakes See more

01.01.2022 I get asked a lot about vaginal steaming - what on earth does it involve, and why would you choose to do it? Although there is more conversation around this subject lately, it is a practice that goes right back to various indigenous cultures. The object of steaming is to help cleanse the vaginal & uterine tissues, and is very safe, gentle and relaxing when done correctly. Specific herbs are used depending on the needs of the person - for example circulatory stimulants if ther...e is a lot of period pain or growths such as fibroids or cysts, or calendula and rose to help heal & repair tissue after birthing. Each herb has its own properties that will diffuse into the mucous membranes when heated, to create a gentle steam. The whole pelvic area becomes revitalised and the effects can be beneficial for body, mind & spirit. Steaming can help SO many conditions, including irregular cycles, period pain, PMS, endometriosis, menopause, low libido, pelvic trauma and fertility issues. So what does a session look like? First the herbs are chosen, and the little pot is heated up. You will be given a long wrap skirt to wear so you are covered from the waist down. The special stool has a hole in the centre, and is cushioned with towels. Once you are sat and comfortable, you are wrapped with a blanket to help keep the steam in, and to make sure you stay cosy warm. Then you can meditate, read, relax & sip tea for half an hour, letting the herbs do their thing. So is it pleasant? Yes! The temperature is warm but not hot, and the sensation of steaming is calming and relaxing. I’ve never had anyone try it yet and not want to come back for another session! There is a lot of shame around in relation to women and their bodies, and I think steaming is a beautiful way to connect with yourself, and experience something new that is also good for you.
