21.01.2022 One of the great things we get to do in our job is to visit some of the best work shops in Australia and see what the turbos we sell end up fitted on. While we... were in Brisbane for The Honeywell Garrett Jamboree we visited Mike Vine Turbochargers and checked out their own inhouse Speedcar that Darren Vine tells us they "tinker" with. Its a custom built 2.0ltr Esslinger engine with an RSI head and a Garrett GT3071R turbo. The guys are constantly developing the car and have recently swapped the the turbo and manifold from sitting on top of the block to the lower left hand side to get the weight on a lower centre of gravity. This weapon will be back on track in three weeks. See more

14.01.2022 REPLACING TURBOCHARGER ON A V8 DIESEL LANDCRUISER UTE WITH THE 1VD-FTV ENGINE Recently a V8 Landcruiser ute with poor power in the lower half of the engines rev range came in for a troubleshoot and fix. The problem was a very lazy turbo not giving correct boost at low rpm. The VNT mechanism was seized by corrosion of the actuator rod on to the pin on the VNT shaft arm which has a tight fit causing any rust build up to kill movement. With the turbo mounted very close to the bl...ock this problem is inaccessible with the engine in the vehicle. With much patience and effort the engine was out and on a engine stand, which showed just how large and complex this engine is. To give this vehicle the best future reliability some of its limited life parts were replaced while the engine was accessible. These included 29 coolant hoses, starter motor (located in the valley between the cylinder heads), water pump, clutch plate, turbo and its oil feed pipe. Also the inlet manifold and ports had the EGR created carbon and sludge removed. Once the engine was refitted, dyno and road testing showed power back to normal. With over 40 hours of work and a significant parts list, this job almost reached $10 000. O WHAT A FEELING This VNT seizure can happen on any of the single turbo V8’s especially if salt water driving happens. Cleaning with high pressure fresh water in the turbo’s location on the lower, rear, passengers side of the block can help prevent this problem. The part which seizes is in the small space between the turbo and block. After this experience it’s easy to see why the inline 6 cylinder engines are so much sought after. Yours in motoring Mike Vine.

11.01.2022 ANOTHER VICTORY FOR VINE Archerfield Speedway Media Release In front of a packed house at Ausdeck Patios Archerfield Speedway on Sunday night (January 27), Darr...en Vine clocked another feature race win to take out round seven of the Polar Ice Midget Track Championship. Assuming the lead on lap six, Vine was untroubled in his drive to victory lane as Rusty Whittaker advanced into second spot following the demise of early leader Glenn Wright. Having started on the front row alongside Wright, NSW’s Mitch Brien finished in third spot ahead of Brad Dawson and Tom Clauss. Having been granted the opportunity to feature on the Australian Sprintcar Championship program and showcase their racing to a plethora of potential new fans, the field was certainly smaller than expected under the circumstances, with only 15 drivers taking on the time-clock in qualifying and just 14 facing the starter in the feature race. Understandably not getting the best of the track conditions for time trials, it was Tim Farrell who logged the quickest at 15.457. Clauss (15.536) was next best, followed by Whittaker (15.965), Vine (16.034) and Nathan Mathers (16.104), with Brien, Ricky Robinson, Audie Malt, Wright and Mitchell Rooke rounding out the top ten. Despite starting towards the back of the field, Whittaker looked on track to win the opening heat, wresting the lead from Wright on lap seven. However, a lap later, Whittaker was on the infield and Wright reclaimed the top spot to take the win ahead of Chris Singleton and Brien. Heat two saw Clauss break through for his first heat win, leading home Brad Dawson and Brien. The third outing saw Brien lead all the way to defeat Whittaker and Wright, whose third place result would be enough to secure pole position for the feature race. In the final heat, Mathers led early before fading to finish fifth as Vine surged towards the front, rounding up Riki Harrison on the penultimate lap to grab the win, with Cal Whatmore third. Wright easily accounted for Brien to lead the field away in the feature race and he remained in command until lap six when Vine charged into lead. Wright continued to hold sway in second spot despite the best efforts of Whittaker, who started back in the pack after failing to finish his opening heat. It was only when Wright headed infield amidst a cloud of smoke and steam with five laps to run that Whittaker was able to take possession of second spot, leaving him little time to make any impression on Vine. Next in line were Brien and Dawson, with Clauss completing the best night of his rookie season thus with a fifth-place finish. Scott Doyle, Singleton, Mathers, Farrell and Malt completed the top ten, although Robinson was the only other finisher as Harrison and Whatmore failed to go the distance. In Compact Speedcar action, heat wins fell to Matt O’Neill and Mark Maczek before Cody Maroske accounted for a very small field to win the feature race. Dave Collins and Maczek filled the minor placings and were followed to the line by Nick Gannon and Rob Stewart. The next event at Ausdeck Patios Archerfield Speedway is Saturday, February 9 featuring round ten of the East Coast Logistics Sprintcar Track Championship and round eight of the Polar Ice Midget Track Championship, plus Formula 500s, Compact Speedcars, Lightning Sprints and Formula 500 Juniors. 02.01.2022 Vine racing season 2016/17 wrap up Well the off season was one of differences- the boys were busy in the shed putting together Bitza- a non turbocharged essling...er Speedcar while away from the shed there was a fight to save the turbocharged triumph compact Speedcar Black Betty. The busy off season resulted in a stellar opening round of the season in both divisions winning both feature races on the opening night. What an entry for bitza to the world of Vine racing! What an incredible achievement to start after such a torrid off season. In the compact Speedcars in light of it all Darren continued racing Black Betty for the duration of the season taking home 5 feature race wins throughout. With Archerfield hosting the Australian title in both divisions this season we worked on our plans of attack. We discovered an issue with our compact Speedcar the night before the Australian title and went to work like the crazy people we are to defend our title. It wasn't the best opening night for us with our issues plaguing us throughout but we survived enough to head into night two on 4th in points. (Thereabouts). Heading into night two we just weren't sure what would come of the night- while my wife was worried Black Betty might fail us in her night of nights it wasn't to be the case and we got off to a great start and the rest is history (as they say) we claimed our 8th Australian compact Speedcar title and the 5th in row. What an outstanding achievement and I'd say the highlight apart from having my wife , kids, father in law brad and my sisters their to support me was that the international Speedcar drivers were up the top to watch. (Some drivers of which I look up to.) moving into the remainder of the season we fronted up when shows didn't clash and supported until suffering some car issues put us out for the remainder of the season and although Black Betty's turbocharged triumph may have raced her final race we will be back bigger and better to compete next season. The Speedcar is still a new ish area for us especially a non turbocharged one at that! And what a stellar season we've had there. Highlight of the season was becoming the first QLD driver to win the 50 lap event with an amazing field of drivers too! Followed closely by more podium positions and time trialling the best ever throughout the season too. (That part normally lets us down!) Best part of all to top all the other amazing achievements would be claiming the A grade club championship in Speedcars this year. Wow! So happy and proud of all that has been achieved (especially with the behind the scenes issues). I'd like to thank my sponsors - Mike Vine turbos, men at work exhausts and MIS injections. Without their help we couldn't go racing. Also to my dad Mike, brother in law Paul and wife Keli and our girls for all their support. Looking forward to coming back out even stronger in 2017/18! Thanks for the support Thank you to FTBC and Matthew Paul photography for the photos .
