22.01.2022 We have almost made it to the end of 2020 and what a year it has been In March when the ‘ALL STOP’ express train hit us with such ferocity, it took a while to sift through the wreckage before starting to piece together what we once took for granted. Watching the Cairns Fleet tied to the wharf was surreal, only lacking the mist and a distant foghorn as Spoilsport slid into her berth. There are so many words one could use to describe the emotion of 2020 and whether you feel ind...ifferent to the shenanigans that confronted us, I am guessing there will be very few that have not taken time to reflect on what is and is not important. For me, its friends family and loved ones and of course all the amazing people that rallied around MBDE to shore up what we hold so dear. The team spirit amongst staff and the support from divers across Australia has been sensational. It is this collective energy and enthusiasm that has encouraged us on and got us back out on the ocean doing what we love most. A big thank you to everyone that has supported us throughout the year and we're confident that whatever gets thrown our way in 2021, we have the ‘right stuff’ to see us through to better times. 17.01.2022 Joining us on the Yongala Coral Sea Expedition on the 20th November is Andrew Viduka (Andy). Andy is a maritime archaeologist and archaeological objects conservator. Andy is actively involved in maritime archaeological projects with the not-for-profit research group Wreck Check Inc. and is a PhD candidate at the University of New England continuing his research interest in linking community outcomes with the discovery and protection of underwater cultural heritage. GIRT - Gathering Information via Recreational and Technical (GIRT) Scientific Divers is a conservation-focused no-impact citizen-science project. It aims to train members to systematically document observable physical and natural features of inter-tidal or submerged historic shipwrecks, aircraft, and other underwater cultural heritage, to facilitate their conservation, ongoing protection, and management. The focus of the GIRT citizen science project is to enable a better understanding of the condition of underwater cultural heritage sites and the factors driving their preservation or deterioration.
