Two boats were christened on the day, Julian Newton’s Nacra 5.8 'Game On 3' and Adam Jenkinson’s Nacra 5.8 'Cobra 2' - welcome to the club! As we re-introduce more Opening Day tradition, it was great to see the fleet participate in the Sail Past whi...ch also included our Power Boat Committee Chairperson Rick Smith in his V8 beast 'Ricochet 2’. Thanks to all the volunteers on and off the water and our sponsor for the day Adelaide City Kia who covered the nominations and lunch. 14.01.2022 More about Kevin and the rescue attempt in the Vendee. The situation remains worrying. Hoping for the best. FOUR VENDÉE GLOBE SKIPPERS ARE IN THE ZONE TO HELP I...N RESCUE OF KEVIN ESCOFFIER 2200hrs UTC NEWS UPDATE Race Direction of the Vendée Globe have requested the assistance of three competing skippers, Germany’s Boris Herrmann (SeaExplorer-Yacht Club de Monaco), Yannick Bestaven (Maître CoQ IV) and Sébastien Simon (ARKEA PAPREC) to help Jean Le Cam (Yes We Cam!) in the mission to retrieve solo skipper Kevin Escoffier from his life raft after the 40 year old from Saint Malo had to abandon his IMOCA 60 PRB this afternoon after activating his distress beacon. Escoffier was racing in third place in the solo non stop around the world race, at some 840 nautical miles SW of Cape Town, when his PRB got into difficulties and he was forced to take to his liferaft. He alerted his technical team at 1346hrs UTC this afternoon, telling them he had significant amounts of water coming into the boat and triggered his distress beacon. PRB was positioned at 40deg55S 9deg16E at the time the distress beacon was activated. Race Direction of the Vendée Globe alerted MRCC Cape Town and CROSS Griz Nez who have been collaborating in a rescue operation. The skipper closest to Escoffier’s position, Jean Le Cam, who is competing on his fifth Vendée Globe, immediately responded to the request to divert to Escoffier’s position. Guided by Race Direction Le Cam arrived on zone around 1615hrs UTC and quickly established visual and voice contact with Escoffier who was in his liferaft but he was unable to retrieve him in the big, 5m, seas and 20-25 knot winds. The positioning of Kevin Escoffier's personal beacon (AIS MOB Man Over Board) emits HF radiowaves and will only be detected in the local zone. As he was manoeuvring to prepare to get closer to the liferaft Le Cam lost sight of the liferaft and could not establish radio contact nor to pick up the signal from the AIS the range of which was reduced by the heavy seas. He lost sight of Escoffier in the dying light but has continued to try and locate him, Le Cam is communicating regularly with Race Direction and the rescue authorities. The three other skippers are now in, or are approaching the search area. The four skippers will follow a protocol established by Race Direction in coordination with Jean Le Cam. They will approach with three reefs in the mainsail and the engine idling. A grid search area for the zone has been established and will be carried out by the four IMOCAs who are set to provide assistance. The PRB shore crew said that besides his AIS Mob, Kevin Escoffier also means to signal his presence in the liferaft. Daybreak tomorrow morning is around 0340hrs UTC in this zone and the search will be ongoing. This press release has been drawn up jointly with the Vendée Globe and Team PRB.

03.01.2022 Kids in Sharpies - this is a great event running for the third year... If you have kids that are keen, get in touch with your local Sharpie club..

03.01.2022 KSA UPDATE - PART 2 MILANG RE-RUN / COVID 2020 has not been a great year for organizing events and sadly a few weeks ago we postponed our Milang Downwinder / C...ommunity event we were super excited about. The good news is that the wind for that weekend was sub par and a re-run is on the cards for 2021 Summer (early March 2021). In the meantime we encourage people to listen to current SA Health guidelines and apply them as fit to our sport which is generally safe and a low risk activity for transmission of COVID. PFD UPDATE KA/KSA have been involved in meeting with DTPI re; regulations to wear a life jacket whilst kiteboarding. Please be aware despite our efforts to seek a ceasefire on this law, as it stands it is law to wear a PFD whilst kiteboarding. What we ask is that if you are approached by DTPI about Lifejackets, message a committee member so we know and can keep track and please don’t be rude to those enforcing this bureaucratic nonsense as it will not help us. Our position is simplified as followed; - Kiteboarding without a lifejacket is safe as evidenced by lack of drowning incidents in Australia in the last 20 years, this is due to natural buoyancy of equipment - Other states allow no PFD to be worn within 400m of shore - Wearing a PFD can make operating our equipment more hazardous and the extra flotation is sometimes a hinderance (like a surfer trying to duck dive under a wave) KSA COMMUNITY PAGE ETTIQUETTE A few recent posts within our community (both on the page and off the page) have either walked the line or crossed it in terms of rude behavior. We understand that there are a diverse range of personalities, opinions and world views within our community and do not ask that everyone be best mates but please think twice about what is being posted. It is not our intention to heavily moderate this page or become the cyber police, however consider that we all love kiteboarding and want to foster a community that is welcoming for beginners and enjoyable to be in. Many of us have an entire circle of friends from the kiteboarding scene and on the whole it is a great community. What is posted online is almost always interpreted in more harsh tones than what is intended and the eDrama is not good for us.

02.01.2022 This is a cracking race! Get down and support our friends at Christies Sailing Club and add this trophy to your collection!!
