22.01.2022 OK...time for me to speak out a bit more about an issues I have seen come up time and time again in regards to the Breastfeeding friendly Hospitals "10 steps t...o successful breastfeeding" and the relentless criticism of it in the "Fed Is Best" narrative. The more recent one being a meme (with accompanying text) that the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding allows babies to "fast and lose weight waiting for their milk to come in" and that "every minute of every day" babies are developing complications from this (evidence to support every minute of every day??). They go on to say that the Baby-friendly hospitals (which use these ten steps) is based on unproven belief that its safe for babies to wait days before being fully fed and crying out of hunger. Sounds pretty dramatic doesnt it? So what is the reality here and what do the ten steps actually state? Lets talk about what these steps actually mean for us breastfeeding women. And those of us who WANT to breastfeed. As a newly pregnant woman who wanted to breastfeed, these steps are exactly what I want for the hospital Id be birthing in. Staff who were trained to support me and support my breastfeeding goals. I knew I wanted rooming in, I wanted to know my baby would not receive formula or dummies (pacifiers) and I also knew they would know what to look out for if my baby did in fact NEED supplementing. There is ample evidence that shows use of pacifiers can negatively affect breastmilk supply. Introducing a pacifier puts a mothers supply at risk. The stories about babies who are losing weight and crying inconsolably are heartbreaking and COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE if the medical staff actually; LISTENED TO THE WOMEN LOOKED AT THE BABY ACKNOWLEDGED WHEN MEDICAL INTERVENTION (SUPPLEMENTING) WAS NECESSARY. To blame the Baby-Friendly Hospital Policy is damaging, frustrating and just downright WRONG. Nowhere in the 10 steps does it state that babies should be crying from hunger, nowhere in the steps does it say that babies should be left to starve as their mothers "wait for their milk to come in". Whats the truth? The VAST MAJORITY of mothers will make plenty of colostrum to meet their babies needs before their milk transitions to mature milk and "comes in" (usually between 2-3 days post partum). There is a reason we make small amounts of colostrum...our babies need small, frequent breastfeeds in the early days. This stimulates our supply and keeps them full. This is BASIC MEDICAL CARE FOR NEWBORNS. If someone did not recognize a baby who needed supplementing that is MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE Not the fault of the 10 steps to successful breastfeeding. Time to face the facts here. Its about staff ignoring women and babies.

04.01.2022 How amazing are newborns!

03.01.2022 A dietician here in Australia has claimed that breastmilk may make our babies crave sugar saying it, "sets up a taste preference from birth." THIS IS 100% NOT ...BACKED UP BY ANY RESEARCH and actually research shows the opposite. Babies who are breastfed have a preference for a wider array of foods as they get older. Breastmilk is continually changing in taste depending on what the mother eats so the composition (including taste!) help set children up for an openness to many different food tastes. Are you kids constantly asking for sugary foods? Stop giving it to them. Youre the one who buys the food, not them! It is also WELL researched the important role the different sugars have in breastmilk. Sugar acts as a prebiotic to help digestion and it actually act as antibacterial agents killing harmful bacteria in the gut. 01.01.2022 Do you breastfeed your baby to sleep? Have you ever been told it was a bad habit? Moms write into me often concerned that the only way their baby falls asleep i...s at the breast. Either someone in their life is telling them its wrong or they fear they will never "learn" to sleep without boob there. I can guarantee you that they will eventually fall asleep on their own. :) <3 Breastfeeding your baby to sleep is the biological norm. See more
